I am terrified of a Trump presidency

In a strange way, I'd like to see it. Kind of like how you can't look away from a car crash.

Though everyone writing the guy off, don't be so sure. There are a lot of people openly supporting such a lunatic, but you can be sure there are plenty keeping their mouths shut but quietly nodding their head to the idea.

Curious about the wall though, I would legitimately laugh if it did happen.
 
Trump is the one I'm actually least worried about. Any GoP candidate is going to govern from the right, or at least let the Tea Party run over them. Planning on voting for him in the primary, then Hillary in the general. Even though I'll have to (officially) become a Republican, a violation of the GAF ToS...

I don't vote (it's not something i'm proud of), but i'll be voting against Trump in the GE. If I don't at least try, I can't bitch if he wins.

I wasn't really worried until I saw some Nate Silver comments the other day. Its not out of the question that he wins at this point. I think the numbers are all basically ?? since we've never really had someone court the "I hate anyone who isn't a white man" base before.

Don't think trump is actually a republican and definitely don't think he will win the presidency. He will however be the republican nominee unless there is a final split at the delegacy and a civil war within the Republican Party ensues. Either way we will have to deal with Hillary for at least 4 years- which is pathetic enough.

At this point in Regan/Carter, Reagen was behind by 30 points for example.
 
Honestly Trump will be fairly moderate, he panders and all, but he won't carry through with any of his racist promises. He'll have an approval rating equal or worse than Dubya. The Democrats won't like him, and the moderate repubs won't like him for being not conservative enough and the racist won't like him for waffling on his promises

Cruz on the other he's the scary one.

Rubio is a just anothter corporate meat puppet a-la-Dubya.
 
I think that far scarier than Trump is the mentality that has allowed him to become so very popular.

The worst part is a fair amount of America doesn't want to live it down, much like the confederacy parts of the Civil War.
 
I dunno, I asked some republican people I work with what they thought about the debate last night and they were disgusted by it. It's the crazies coming out in force for Trump.
 
Trump's going to end up like Marie Len Pen which people were scared of awhile ago because they thought her party would get a lot of support in the recent regional elections in france. I wouldn't worry about anything. The democrats will figure out how to deal with him in the GE if he gets there.

An ideological purist like Cruz is far more terrifying to me.

I mostly just see Trump as a loud buffoon who panders to the lowest common denominator for votes.

People need to remember that American Presidential elections aren't decided by republicans or democrats. They're decided my moderates and swing-voters, voters that would never vote for someone like Trump.

That's what I'm worried about; swing voters and moderates are not ideological and can be appealed to by the left or right: viewers of the apprentice are higher than voter turn out in some states.

I know folks that have voted for every winning campaign since Reagan and they're willing to give Trump a shot...it's terrifying but we're in Jimmy Carter territory where people feel like they've gotten 8 years of half measures from both parties. The bigger problem are millenials and late gen xers who can't be bothered to vote and will just stay home.

Very slightly unrelated, but that's the best thing about Bernie, he's getting young people interested in politics.

Now if they actually continue to show interest and involvement rather than just throw a hissy fit when Hillary gets the nomination remains to be seen.

With you there: it happened with Howard Dean's voters not flocking to Kerry. To think he got railroaded out for a simple "Yee Haw!" and yet a candidate for president basically just revealed the size of his presidential pen on national television and is still going strong...that scares the shit out of me.
 
I'm terrified, and deeply, deeply disappointed at all the support he's getting from this country. I'll be so depressed if a scumbag running on a platform of fear-mongering hatred like him actually wins.
 
I swear if Trump wins I'm joining the military. Eventually, America will do something that will require international prevention. He will be the end of civilisation, and I will go down fighting the stupidest, most disgraceful excuse for a 'leader' of the 'most advanced' country on Earth as he orders the extermination of the planet simply because 'lol y cant we be the best agen?'.
Hellfire and armageddon will follow, as the world rises up to stop another Nazi party from destroying the world, and we will all die as America gets to use its wonderful stockpile of nukes that FOR SOME FUCKING REASON is still a good idea to have around? Oh? Can't win a war? Ok, EVERYONE DIES. Back in the day, when a country lost a war, they'd suck it up and deal with it. Not today, at the hint of Trump losing he will kill us all and think he's saving America right up to the second the planet sets fire.
 
I wouldn't worry too much, unless, by some miracle, he is massively successful in his first 2 years and soars to a 90% approval rating, then you can panic.

That assumes he could even win in the general election. People underestimate the broader US electorate when discussing Trump. As of right now, he's a "Republican" problem. The GOP's fear comes from the fact that Trump is taking advantage of an image they have been trying to change since Obama was elected. They saw the numbers and knew if they didn't gain broader appeal they would have a much harder time winning the Presidency in the future. But the "cancer" was already there and Palin was one of the first signs of it. Since then they've been powerless to stop it. Mostly it's because of their magnificent ability to control their message and stay in lockstep, which is great in an unchanging world. But the world does change and so the GOP ran smack into that cancer they created.

So the question is; Will Trump actually appeal to the broader electorate? My answer is no, I do not believe his antics will sell there. But I do hope he is nominated. The GOP needs to hit rock bottom, for their own good as well as the nation's, and the only way that will happen is in a very harsh rebuke from the general electorate. Which I believe will happen.

Now, if I'm wrong (and I might be) and Trump is elected, he will have to be enormously successful right out of the gate to keep the pendulum from swinging back in the mid terms. At the very least he has to not make too many waves so as to keep liberal voters at home during the mid terms.

Trump's success has more to do with the GOP than the US as a whole. The GOP set out to create a hardened block of voters that will turn out and win them elections, and they did that. Problem is, that block of voters are an immovable object, so when the the GOP saw a need to appeal to Latinos, that block went for the guy calling them rapists. Oops.

America is a big, diverse place. We have our faults and crazy people just like the rest of the world, but we aren't bat shit insane. Trump is really nothing to be concerned about. His supporters don't represent all of America and the world has changed since the turn of the century. The likelihood of a Hitler 2.0 is really small.

I also think the prospect of having Trump's legacy being a ridiculous fucking wall, will put a stop to those plans. It'll be Trump's Gitmo. Something that will be way more complicated in reality.

TL;DR
Trump won't win and if he does, America is a big lumbering global machine that doesn't turn on a dime. Honestly of the Republican field right now, Trump is the one I am the least afraid of. Cruz is fucking evil and smart enough to be super damaging. Rubio will probably give up when it gets tough or just be a puppet.
