Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

had never heard of this game before i saw it included in the psn spring promo

i thought this was that other game deaths gambit at first hah

So, after getting a PS4 just to play this damn game on release, I'm loving it.
I've actually only played like, 2 hours total of Souls games before, so this is all a bit new to me.

The gameplay is fun, the graphics and atmosphere are really neat, and the controls feel fluid.
Still, it's RIDICULOUSLY hard. Like, man. I need to get my game together. >.>

Played for about 3 hours, most of them with my boyfriend. I think I'll enjoy it more solo though... coop is fun too, but I like going at my own pace, and I seem to be able to detect the traps, handle the timing on dodges, etc. better without a distracting second player. Also the coop mechanic is a little clunky...

I don't get the complaints about the hitboxes so far. Haven't had any problem with them in particular. The traps are a little hard to detect and feel cheap sometimes though.

And the way you pick your class, starting gift, religion etc. is too obtuse. Some text explaining what everything does would have been helpful.

This game fucking sucks. The hitboxes are awful. The telegraphing is incredibly inconsistent, sometimes huge wind-ups that take eternity and other times instant combos that would have been impossible to see coming. The character movement is terribly broken, like randomly not being able to roll through bosses/enemies for no god damned reason. It's way too easy to get pinned against a wall and then have an enemy infinite you to death, especially thanks to the aforementioned broken as fuck rolling. Difficulty is completely random depending on if the enemies decide to do a really easy attack or a five-string ultra combo thanks to some invisible dice roll.
Someone hasn't gotten gud yet, I see.

No seriously, are you even watching your stamina bar? Rolling has been completely consistent for me and its invincibility frames are generous.

Hearing about hit box issues is really putting me off... guess I may wait a few days to pull the trigger on this after all.
See above. xD

I really wish they had at least added an option to use Souls-like controls. Considering the lengths they went to in order to directly market this to Souls players through YouTube it seems really odd that they would change all the controls and throw people off like that.

hahahaha ha ha ha haaaaaaa

(in case I didn't make it obvious enough I find your blatant dismissal and patronizing bullshit just a little bit hilarious)

Eehhh, I'm still not really sure about this. Some of the things I'm running into do seem a little mean, like the
Vilehawks who shoot arrows at you without there really being enough room to dodge them, and the slimes that are sometimes transparent before they drop on you - couple that with the area being really dark anyway and it makes it almost impossible for me to see them in advance.
Would also like to know how creeds actually work - I found a sanctuary held by another creed, but I was still able to use it just fine, levelling up and getting the other creed's healing item too. Why are there multiple healing items for the different creeds anyway? Is there a difference between them?

3rd(?) Boss
Kraekan Cyclops
down.

I think I need more equip load and stamina before using the claymore. I'm going shieldless and fat rolling plus huuuuuge stamina consumption isn't conducive to staying alive.

Echoing Morrigan's post, I haven't had any glaring hitbox issues. Up to the 3rd boss I haven't suffered any hits I would call "cheap", but yeah, traps are incredibly hard to see with my terrible eyesight.

My biggest complaint is that enemies can hit you across screen transitions while you can't see them, but that's a rare occurrence and requires you to have run away, pulling an enemy from its home screen to the previous screen. Plus you can do the same to them if you know they're right on the other side of the transition.

How do you leave messages for other players?

That's okay, I found your hyperbolic raging hilarious too.

And learn to take a joke, geez

You would also get a huge chunk of salt which is amazing for starting levels

Yup I'm going to try and do it. Wonder what class might have the edge. I thought ranged but it seems the key to the battle is simply timing, rolling and chipping away. Therefore I guess the best melee starter weapon is key.

"This game fucking sucks" is not hyperbole?

Tell you what, record a video of your "bullshit" so we can be the judge of it next time. It's easy with the PS4 sharing thing.

I described with ample detail why that was my position. I'm glad that most people are not experiencing the issues I did, but again that does not take them away from me. Please get off your high horse and acknowledge that maybe the game isn't a perfect experience for everyone.

High horse? Jesus, calm down lol. All I said is a suggestion of taking a clip of what's causing you grief, because I'm curious to see what it is you're experiencing that's so bad. I've seen people claim some parts of Blood/Souls games are "bullshit" and it turned out the problem wasn't with the game (like that one dude who struggled so much in Bloodborne when it turns out he didn't even know he could dodge sideways...), so yeah I'm skeptical. But it's entirely possible that I'd see it and think "ok yeah that is indeed cheap". And the reason I'm skeptical is because you were very hyperbolic about it, declaring how much it fucking sucks and all that. I never said the game was "perfect" or anything like that.

Derp, picked up a scythe called Haymaker some time and never noticed. It's faster and lighter than the claymore, and not much less damage..

I don't mean to get off track, but asking me to calm down after you specifically antagonized me is a perfect example of being on that high horse.

I can't record a video right now because I already crawled into bed and don't want to get up, but my friend recorded this video and I made a breakdown of it here plus in a follow-up post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=198369392&postcount=1371

That's not half of the problems I encountered, but it's a good start. I detest on a fundamental level games that teach you by punishing you. I think it's bad game design and I'm never going to (intentionally) design anything like that. Yet I recognize some people like it. So while it may fucking suck for me, it might be pure bliss for you. I don't have a problem with that. I have a problem with people trivializing my opinion or acting like I'm just trying to exaggerate. Please believe me when I say I wanted to thoroughly love this game and have been following it off and on for several months now.

How does the local multiplayer work exactly?
It's kinda complicated. First, both players needs to have their character created already.

You need a Sellsword Stone (one of the starting gift is that, but you get one fairly early into the game too). Then you offer the stone to your sanctuary, and it allows you to let a second player join. The player then presses X to join.

P2 will earn salt, money (though seemingly far less?), and the same loot as P1 while playing as a sellsword, but boss progress and shortcuts remain locked in their world. So if you want to resume a coop session, you'd have to return to a sanctuary that has a Sellsword Stone offering to resummon them.

Edit:

I don't mean to get off track, but asking me to calm down after you specifically antagonized me is a perfect example of being on that high horse.
Oh. The "git gud" part was a joke, a reference to Dark Souls threads. I didn't mean to piss you off with it, it was just meant to be gentle ribbing. So I apologize.

OK I'll check that out tomorrow, thanks for the link.

Man the first boss was a push over. I had more trouble with the first Bloodborne boss than this guy. So far not really feeling challenged even after that boss.

Been watching streams of this, and lemme just say that The Sodden Knight is absolutely nothing compared to some of the other bosses. If anyone thinks the Sodden Knight is bullshit, then they're in for a super rough ride.

Well that's a little unfair. I had 12.2k salt after killing 2 bosses in a row. I got killed by an enemy, and it said a totally different enemy had my salt. I went back to the area and killed everything and nothing had it. :/

What I've seen is that sometimes the salt you lose forms into an enemy of itself, and you gotta hunt that asshole. One stream had the salt turn into a flying enemy which wasn't right where the character died.

That may or may not happen only if you die from non-enemies (like gravity).

Yeah I killed everything in the area. Nothing has it.

Yep, I know. I read the messages when I die. I got partially poisoned by a poison cytoplasm, then one of the huge fat guys with clubs toxic'ed me. The toxic killed me, and the death screen said I had been killed by a poison cytoplasm.

I killed literally everything in the forest. Nothing. I'd wager it's some weirdness having to do with the fact that I got partially poisoned by one enemy, then fully poisoned by a different enemy.

Any way, it's whatever. I'm over it. 12.2k is easy to farm. Just the principle of losing my haul from two bosses to a glitch.

Ah, ok. That is a potentially weird scenario, but not an unlikely one.

I really wanted to pick this up but no cross-save and no d-pad movement are huge deal breakers for me.

Hope they patch in those features.

Definitely intrigued by this game, but will probably purchase it at a later time on steam, hopefully during a sale or something.

Any idea how long it takes to beat the game?

*edit*

can't find the game on steam, is it not available?

Only on PS4 for now. It's coming to Steam (and Vita) later this year.

My post isn't relevant to Salt and Sanctuary so it's a bit off-topic but I find it disingenuous when Souls fans say none of the bosses or enemies are cheap or unfair, that it's always the player's fault. I found Father Gascoigne is one of the bosses that was cheap because he can have a combo to keep on wailing on you even when you're down. I beat him, but it wasn't without cheesing.

I'm surprised "get/git gud" isn't a bannable response when it just amounts to being a shitpost imo. It's not just a joke because people use it as a serious response too many times.

Should be a floating orb on your screen somewhere which is generally the direction he direction the enemey with your lost salt is. Thats how i found mine after i died.

Or that was just luck and that orb has nothing to do with where i died lol

I've never considered Gascoigne to be cheap. Yes he has combos but the tells are so obvious that they're easy to avoid.

Anyway, finally downloaded. The controls bother me less than I thought they would. First boss was a pushover, killed it in one go. One hour of play and I'm level 10 - started as a Knight and making my way up the Swordsman line with a couple in other spots here and there.

I will say that it looks great (Besides the faces) and the sound design is fantastic.

5 bosses down so far, love how all the shortcuts start opening up. Really enjoying this, moved onto a 2handed build with some greatsword, stat tree is just incredible.

This is really hacking me off now. I mean really? Screen was so full of shit that I couldn't see my character or the slimes that chain ganked me - I genuinely don't see how I could've gotten out of that. Doesn't help that rolling takes like half the stamina bar so that's not really valid either.

That's just completely untrue unless you're spamming dodge to get up as soon as you're knocked down.

You're invincible for awhile when you first get knocked down, so you should time when you get up to where his next attack doesn't combo you.

But yeah, "git gud" should be bannable.

So I started this game this morning before going to work. Very good game, combat offers a lot of diversity and I feel right on within a soul-esque universe. I started Mage just to see what the magic had to offer. Gotta say it's cool to let you cast fire balls and let you protect with dual daggers, it's like if they don't force you to be vulnerable from the get go but offers you alternative to defend yourself if you're out of magic energy. Anyway, I chose the crystal ball as starting gift, but I can't use it in the first sanctuary. Does anybody knows why?

It's kinda complicated. First, both players needs to have their character created already.

You need a Sellsword Stone (one of the starting gift is that, but you get one fairly early into the game too). Then you offer the stone to your sanctuary, and it allows you to let a second player join. The player then presses X to join.

Aaah okay. Thanks! I'm assuming the Sellsword Stone isn't a consumable item then.

I'm still unsure wether to buy this or not. One one hand, i do want a soulsfix until dks3 releases. On the other, i don't want to play a game that built it's entire foundation on "yo check this game just like souls ;DDDD".

"Git gud" is just a condescending way of saying "practice makes perfect," which is often the key to beating any given Soulsborne boss. It's legitimate advice.

As for Gascoigne, that's not cheap because you can do the exact same thing to him. It didn't even kill you. You could have dodged that last attack as you were getting up. Hell, at 2:38 you could have spammed circle to dash away instead of getting up slowly and avoided that entire situation. Seems to me like you'd rather blame the game instead of figuring out what you did wrong and trying to fix it.

You could kill the slimes as they spawn.
