Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

Man this looks great, but I'm not too big on indy styled games. One important question for those who've been playing, does the difficulty feel like it does in SoulsBorne titles? Or does it come off as difficult for the sake of being difficult? I hate cheap difficulty!

Bit of both, but to be fair this is a 2D game and that changes the landscape significantly versus 3D.

This game hits all the checkmarks in terms of personal expectations. I started as a Paladin (instead of my typical Rouge or Knight). I'm enjoying it so far.

Enjoying it a lot so far, about 1 hour in.
Only big negative for me is that you can't use the d-pad to control your character.
I think it wouldn't be a problem to offer a d-pad mode: They could solve the walking/running problem by having you hold down a button to walk slowly.

Will take some getting used to. But minor really.

Ok, I couldn't find the Reaper skill in the grid haha. Now I got the Pikeman Skill...and it removed one bar from the red X on the weapon when I try to equip it. I'm guessing that I really need the stats for it now.

One red bar means you can two-hand it. You'll need to get the tier 2 reaper skill in order to one-hand it.

Dig it but don't know if I am personally enjoying playing a hunter. The game doesn't feel quite responsive enough to support the gameplay I want for it. I find myself playing the Hunter more and more like a knight.

I don't know what 'indy styled games', means...

But the difficulty about on par with Mega Man games. Everything is telegraphed, everything has patterns that aren't difficult to learn. The 2D nature of the game, with Dishwasher-esque moves, and jumping mechanics really make this feel like a slow, methodical Super Ghosts & Ghouls.

I'm really loving it.

Man, ive been following this game since forever. Ive been dying to get it, but I just bought Stardew Valley and its sucking me in so hard that Im not sure if I should get this yet.

Also - my PS+ account will end tomorrow. Can I still play this game if I dont have PS+?

Of course.

So far I've seen one person say that without question the combat and controls in this game are horrible and broken. I'm too lazy to quote them and not trying to dogpile or whatever, so I'll just ask: is there anybody else who even remotely agrees with this? I've played about 2 hours and I have to say I haven't experienced this at all. Rolling doesn't seem broken, enemy attacks can be tough but not impossible to predict and I haven't been corner trapped by infinity attacking enemies or whatever. As far as I can tell the controls and combat are nearly perfect.

definitely not

I would dismiss that immediately and move along

Man I really want to play this again but I am going to wait til the PC version. Love reading the impressions though.

I would disagree. I think the combat it great, especially for a 2d game. I would say the game if fair challenging. Parrying feels great, weapons have cool move-sets ect.. everything I could want in a game.

Just got the infrantry pollaxe. I can equip it after getting the Class 1 pikeman skill, but there is still a diagonal red line on the icon (instead of 2). What does this mean exactly?

Edit: Ah, I see someone already answered the same question.

NOOOOO. All the points I've spent in Dex and Str hahahaha. Any way to get Grey Pearl in the early going?

Meh. at least I'll use that scythe well.

As a souls vet, i felt like a complete bitch when i died seriously 5 times in a row to the god damn Sodden Knight... the game was harder that i expected and still dont have a complete grasp everything but its comming togeather nicely

Man The controls feel so good but I hope they remap the remote play controls since dodge and block are not mapped to the shoulder buttons

Incredible game. But how do i get more health? Can i rejoin the first covenant?

I would like to know the answer to this as well. I used the "work" option to turn in materials for extra health charges, then I switched covenants at another sanctuary. My extra charges are gone.

Also, those pillars that you can use to turn upside down. What do I need to do to be able to activate them? I reached the guy who says something about going back to where you started, then went back and searched all over the place for about an hour. Can anyone tell me what I need to do or find to use those things?

Goddamn this is fucked up. I had 12 strength, used a pearl to remove the point and spent it on another strength node closer to the skill I need (Pike level 2). But I wasn't credited for the new point. Now my strength is 11.

Game looks pretty interesting, but I have a concern...from the gameplay vids I've watched, it can be difficult at times to see enemies and enemy actions due to the background and lighting.

Have you guys experienced any issues with that?

So for the most part people playing this seem pretty positive on it. It doesn't have a meta score, but it's a 9.3 for user reviews.

Is it safe to say, if i was excited for this as a 2D souls themed experience that I would enjoy my time with this game?

Been playing this for a few hours. It's very fun. I would highly recommend it. Anybody who saw folks giving negative feedback and had doubts should not let it stop them from giving it a try.

I'm curious what peoples experience with the opening religions is. I went with the iron religion and it seems to give me four rolls to eat that renew each time I die or touch a sanctuary. When I go use a different sanctuary, devoted to another God I get different food. The game has been offering to let me switch religions but says I'll become an apostate. Anybody have an idea what's going on mechanic wise?

I thought the game looked a little gray on streams. The colors are alittle better in person, the traps are extremely devious so you have to pay close attention. Generally you can see the arrowsfrom enemies but you have to be on your toes.

There are secret doors and walls so make sure to press O against walls when you come up near them

Also: if people like this I want to point them in the direction of Valdis story. Which is an insanely good MetroidVania with solid combat.

Fuck yeah go for it. It's like Dark Souls and Castlevania had a sweet, sweet baby.

Yeah, i think if you want a 2d souls game this is a pretty good game to buy.

I think I'm a total idiot.

This is the only progress i can see and it's not grabbable. To the right is the Red Cages which I can't enter, there is the cave under the Cyclops that leads to another blocked area. I can't find anywhere else. I'm a moron.

Not even close.

It plays incredibly well and I haven't felt any issues whatsoever in 5-6 hours.

So far this game is well beyond my expectations. It's better than any other 'souls like' game I've tried. here's what I don't get though: it's a blatant ripoff right? I mean, set aside the gameplay mechanics, level design, enemy attack animations etc. It's 2d souls in almost every way, including the controls which are IDENTICAL to souls. rolling, parrying, light strong attacks, etc. So why in the hell are the buttons different? I mean, clearly they wanted to be exactly like souls in every way, so why did they map the attack buttons to the face buttons and using items to the shoulder buttons. Why the hell is dodge on r2 and not circle? Because they wanted to be different? don't make me laugh. Why make everything else in your game an absolute blatant ripoff and then just arbitrarily remap the buttons? Even in 2d this game controls so much like a souls game that my muscle memory is still kicking in, hours later and trying to use souls button mapping. Why didn't they just go with that? by the time I'm finished with this game I'll be back to dark souls 3 and trying to hit r2 to roll. it's going to be a nightmare.

I think because his other games had similar control setups.

need to add a brightness control for video as well

I shouldn't have to change TV settings for one game

It is quite dark, but with my TV being calibrated, I guess it's just what the devs wanted (still should have a slider).

People with wonky settings, or black crush (using RGB limited/full incorrectly) are going to have a nightmare of a time.

Just beat the first two bosses, enjoying the game so far even if I am terrible at it. Anyone know the penalties for switching the covenant equivalents or claiming one of the already established sanctuaries to your faith?

You get "sin" for becoming an apostate. There'a an NPC early on that can remove sin ala...well sin in Dark Souls hahaha. No clue what it does yet.

Man parries and ripostes feel so good. So does dodging around and through huge bosses and enemies ala Souls. I can't think of a better way to translate that kind of combat to 2D.

Guts rage for dreamcast is a fairly difficult 3rd person action game thats more souls then dmc as well.

I've never heard of that game, I'm always down to try out new dreamcast games so I'll have to check it out.

I'm glad to hear that people are enjoying this game, Ive been looking forward to it for a while now. I've been intrigued ever since they released the first game play video

I thought it was going to hate the control scheme but I actually find it quite pleasing. The addition of the jump button makes using square and triangle for attacks a lot more intuitive. I also love the L1 one Loadout switch. Let me go from my sword and shield for Defence to my two-handed great sword for badass damage. If you are not using that feature you need to start.
