Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Win 10 |OT| Down But Not Out

Try to click RMB (right mouse buton) on this program in Menu Start. There should be an uninstall option there.

Found the app using search, thank you.

On to the game itself. Finished the game on casual. I really loved the variety in the first half. eg. Plaza fight, mine carts, shooting propane tanks/playing with searchlights to ward off krill (sp), etc. Toward the end the amount of plaza fights seemed a bit much though. I can see why the series became so popular beyond the obvious gore/machismo.

Why uninstall it? No MP?

Would someone be able to help me beat RAAM on Insane and get the "Brothers to the End" achievement? I've beat the rest of the game on solo insane, but can't seem to beat RAAM after about an hour of trying. If you want to help please send a message to my gamertag - Outlawed Torn

It was the best at what it did a decade ago and helped to usher in many of the mechanics that have been used in third person shooters since?

Sure, the campaign feels a bit archaic now but at the time there was nothing quite like it except maybe re4

For the update next week and answering question
https://gearsofwar.com/en-us/forums...11/ce4e8579-c73b-49df-8a7d-cc76de6d83c4/posts

Hi everyone,

My name is Cam, I’m the Technical Director for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Windows 10. The team and I have been reading the forums and looking over social media and other gaming communities daily. Here’s an update on what we’re working on.

We have an update scheduled for next week that contains the following:

Performance optimizations
Refactor of texture settings to better reflect VRAM requirements and to better manage the texture levels for each setting.
Ambient Occlusion tweaks.
Tuned mouse coming out of roadie run.
Disabled mouse smoothing.

We will also be deploying some updated optimized playlists to help with matchmaking. We were hoping to get these out before the weekend but will instead get these out early next week.

There are some common questions that I’d like to cover here.

Textures not loading
This will be improved by the update next week. We’ll continue to make improvements here where we can.

NAT problems
We are looking into why this is happening. While we work on discovering the root cause, we are discussing changes we can do to help matchmaking if you are erroneously given the wrong NAT type.

Long Queues
Our playlist change coming early next week should help with this.

21:9 Support
We hear you and we are adding ultra-wide resolutions to the game.

Mouse Acceleration
Our update next week will disable mouse smoothing and increase the responsiveness coming out of roadie run. I’ll continue to read the feedback after the update.

Achievements not unlocking
We’re working on tracking down the reason this would happen.

Other items we are working on:
- Reducing hitches on start of level.
- Reducing hitches when streaming level chunks.
- Reducing audio stutter on older CPU’s.

Please continue to provide feedback and ask questions in our Technical Support forum as we are always listening. We greatly appreciate the feedback and thanks again for the support.

Did they ever fix the Gsync issue? I am on the latest Nvidia drivers and still have the menu freezing problems?

I just tested and it's completely fixed for me. Maybe you need to clean install your drivers using DDU? There should be zero menu freezing w/ G-Sync.

They answered some questions on their forum:

Hi,

There are some great questions and ideas here.

FPS Counters
I agree. I know there are some out there that already work with UWP. We'll look into adding something until there is more support.

Population Indicator
We've discussed this internally, let's see how our playlist changes work out and then we can consider further changes.

Custom Lobby List
I'll talk to the team, again we'll see how the playlist changes work out.

Push to Talk
We don't have much space for more options on the controller, but we're considering this. I think it's a good idea.

V-sync
We all agree and are working with the platform team on this. The game is capable of much higher framerates than you're seeing if your monitor is limited to 60hz.

Dedicated Servers and Other Game Modes
Gears absolutely uses dedicated servers. We will look at what's happening and make sure all the game modes are working correctly. The playlist changes will help here.

EXE File
Gears does have an exe file. However, it's run through the windows app container. The gaming community has given lots of feedback in this area and I'm sure it's being heard.

VRAM Issues
The texture changes we've made will help with this.

For REDxBARCHETTA specifically, your 290X should get a 12-16% performance increase with the coming update. I will double check its performance numbers in 4K on Monday morning. We recommend the 390X for 4K, but the two cards are very similar (outside of VRAM). With our update, the Fury X will be much better at 4K.

Borderless Fullscreen
LegendaryDread has some good questions.
- Increased video requirements: We create our swap chain differently in UWP to manage this. Extra VRAM pressure generally comes from other things you're running on the system and can affect us, this is the same in exclusive full screen.
- Multi GPU: There is no limitation here. We are working on adding mGPU.
- Strictly enforced V-sync: We are working with the platform team on this. https://twitter.com/XboxQwik/status/703734557774774272

Update Timing Clarity
The update is coming next week. I'll continue to update the main post with what we're working on.

Connection Issues
@Wake up NE0 - I've alerted our ops team and they are looking into your issue.

Please keep the questions and comments coming. Your continued feedback makes us better.

They answered more questions:

Adjust FOV
Will look into it and update soon.

Cross play
We have discussed this (we talk about everything you guys are suggesting). We are going to make sure all game modes are working as expected and roll out the playlist changes and evaluate those. We'll continue to discuss options to improve.

Updates through the Windows Store
Thanks OutOfReachCake. Here's some technical details on how the update process works:
The Store uses a delta update system. We update our game package with fixes, submit the full package to store and then the Store does the rest to get you an update. The Store achieves this by doing the following:
It maintains a list of "current versions" of all apps/games in the Store.
This is periodically synced with your machine to identify apps/games that are not latest version.
When you update the Game, the store scans the installed package compared to what it has on the server and identifies the chunks that differ between the two. These chunks are then updated on your machine.
For people who download the package for the first time (or re-download), they get the updated package immediately.
Now, the problem we experienced with the last update was a bug in the store that didn't properly update the progress bar while the above steps were running. The fix for this was rolled out the day we launched by the store team, but it takes time to propagate Windows updates worldwide. The progress bar would show 50+GB the entire time it is scanning to see what to update. Gears is one of the biggest packages in the store, so that process takes a little bit of time. We're constantly giving feedback on how the store can better support us and other games. We checked with the Store team and 95%+ of users downloaded the correct 105MB update.

Access to Game Files (INI's)
I'm looking into what we can do here.

With the latest AMD driver and our update from last week, all major stutter on Fury X, 380X and Nano should be gone with no corruption left in the game. Our coming update will further improve performance, especially for the Fury. Sorry for any problems you encountered, happy to hear more feedback after the next update.

Gamma
Kingping3D, yeah it is gamma. I'll look into this.

Skippable Startup Movies
Will look into it, can't promise anything here.

Right trigger glitch
I have never seen this happen. We will run through a bunch of wired controllers on Monday and see if we can reproduce this.

NAT problem
Yes, we are trying to get the root cause.

Async Compute
We're focused on ironing out issues with stuttering caused by some inefficiencies in our PSO caching and by garbage collection in Unreal. We will evaluate overall title stability before considering further changes.

Can't get past title screen
Generally this is caused by an older driver, but there is something else happening for a few people. Sorry you're having this problem, I am trying to get to the bottom of it.

Freesync
We are working with AMD to make sure Gears supports Freesync

G-sync
Nvidia's latest driver update resolves issues with G-sync.

bakertin has a bunch of feedback. Thank you for taking the time to type it all up.

Need INI config file to customize keybindings as well as tweaking graphics settings
- You can customize keybindings and tweak graphic settings, but I understand what you're asking for here. I'll look into it.

Need DirectX 12 Framerate, Frametime, and Video Memory Usage Overlay support for benchmark purposes (including Campaign & Multiplayer)
- Considering this one.

Need Mouse Input option to deliver more precision and accuracy for the mouse, especially high DPI mouse
- I think someone else had a similar question about lower range on the mouse sensitivity. I will check this one on Monday.

Need Exclusive Fullscreen mode in order to allow PC gamers to record PC gameplay with recording software such as NVIDIA Shadowplay, Dxtory, FRAPS, Mirillis Action, etc. In addition, running fullscreen mode saves some video memory as well as framerate, and also accommodate SLI/Crossfire users take advantage of multiple Graphics Card for achieving better performance in-game!
- I've responded to this in the main post. Community feedback about UWP borderless window is being heard. Regarding multi-GPU, we are working on it.

Need refresh rate option
- I think we could have done better with our lock framerate video setting. Will discuss with the team.

Add Vertical-Sync On and OFF option in-game
- Working with the platform team on this.

Add G-Sync and FreeSync support
- Answered above, but G-sync is supported with Nvidias latest driver and we're working with AMD on FreeSync support.

Add warning hints for lower-end graphics card that have at least 2GB Video Memory or less and Add warning hints as PC gamers increases Texture Quality settings. For example, setting High in Texture Quality requires at least 4GB Video Memory whereas setting Highest in Texture Quality requires at least 8GB Video Memory or more. That way, it prevents swapping data from Video Memory to RAM (Volatile Memory), otherwise it causes the game hitching or stuttering; in other words, gamers will see frame hiccups or huge frame drop when moving at a very fast camera angle.
- This is really insightful feedback. We've discussed exactly this because our settings don't make the requirements clear. In the update next week we've renamed the texture settings in addition to rebalancing the texture mips for the settings. The texture pool is the last thing we create after shaders, vertex and index buffers, render targets, etc. (the essentials) are all in VRAM and is dynamic. Having a texture setting that is too high will generally result in "muddy" textures as we don't have space to load the higher detail mips.

Add Enable/Disable Option for Depth of Field
- Considering.

Add Enable/Disable option for Film-Grain Effects
- Considering.

Add Off option for Shadows Quality for lower-end graphics card, especially maintaining higher framerate for high refresh rate monitor (144Hz+)
- I'll have to double check what the "low" shadow setting does. It turns off most shadows.

Add more camera options such as Smart Camera, Auto-Center Camera, Pan Camera, Free-Look Camera, etc.
- I think this is outside the scope of the changes we want to make, but you're not the first to ask so I'll think about it.

Need offline mode for Single-Player Campaign incase if internet connection does down
- Single player does work offline.

Need Executable file to launch the campaign quicker by adding exe for Steam which majority of PC gamers strongly prefer over Windows Store!
- This is common gaming community feedback, which is being heard by the platform team.

Give us an option to disable intro when launching the game since I don't like staring at the advertised logo for nearly 1 minute...
- Answered above, will consider options here.

Add Soundtrack playlist incase if people wants to record and upload to YouTube and then stream Soundtrack Album.
- Outside the scope of changes we want to make.

Continue to fix possible glitches and bugs, especially A.I. system. For instance, Cole Train, somehow, was taking cover behind small cinder block walls but was hovering mid-air, however. So that needs to be fixed. Sometimes when I sprint to the door, Marcus Fenix's kick door animation effect sometimes fail to open the door in about few inches away, and thus I have to approach right next to the door, and press interact button in order to open the door, and then chainsaw Grubs, filled with crimson blood effect!
- Good feedback, will make sure these are in our bug database.

We are focused on making sure the playlists work and people can play game modes that aren't TDM. Cross play is not coming to Gears UE right now, but we will always consider and discuss all options raised by the community.

Should be a very solid game after a few updates. I just hope they add cross play in the future

Cross-play coming if I understood that part right.
We have discussed this (we talk about everything you guys are suggesting). We are going to make sure all game modes are working as expected and roll out the playlist changes and evaluate those. We'll continue to discuss options to improve.

I can't even buy it from the store. Windows updates up to date, but still days I need latest updates. Argh!!!

10240? Edit: Ugh wtf

Then you're not fully up to date. For some reason you don't have the latest updates released last November.

I'd like to help you figure out why:
  • Do you have the "defer upgrades" setting in update Advanced Options
  • Have you run any utilities which modify how Windows Update works?
  • Have you upgraded to Windows 10 from 7/8/8.1 within the last 30 days?

Well I sincerely appreciate that! See above for my answers

Nothing to do with PC though. You should have posted that in a Gears 4 thread.
Edit : Ah, news update tomorrow.
Right.

I'd like Microsoft to clarify once and for all whether or not Gears 4 is coming to PC (even if later) so I can either keep following this or forget about it and shift my attention elsewhere.

do people have/sell vouchers for this game or can you only obtain it buy buying directly from the store?

I don't see it when I go to Windows Store -> Downloads and Updates. What's current version number in the bottom right corner of your screen on the main menu? 1.7.0.0?

yes

it's definitely a new update. It now shows the required VRAM for texture settings for example

3GB (High)
4GB (Ultra)

There's a 4K texture setting, too. 6GB VRAM I think?

Single player still has stutter for me w/ a 980 Ti + G-sync btw. Not sure if it's the game or me.

edit: the stutter is less noticeable when I drop my refresh rate from 144hz to 60hz, but it's still there (single player).

Damn excited that gears of war 4 beta will be on PC, but this new update broke gsync again. Videos work, but I can't even navigate through the menu because of the choppy performance.

Gears of War 4 beta is Xbox One only. Don't believe anything you read on the internet.

However, you can access the Xbox One beta by playing Gears UE on PC.

The Gears 4 beta is Xbox One only, the only platform it has been announced for as of now.
There is no Gears 4 PC beta because there is no PC version to speak of at this time.

I would certainly welcome Gears 4 on PC, but we are likely a long way off from a confirmation assuming Microsoft ever bring it to bolster their pitiful Windows 10 lineup.

I bit the bullet. Got the game. Stepped in as of patch 1.7.
970, 16GB RAM, 2500K @ 4.GHz.

First thing that happened. Or didn't. Looked at a static image for a long time. Finally something happened, but only at about 1 frame per fifth second. Turns out that if the game runs in borderless fullscreen while duplicating your monitor (I usually do since I game alot on my HDTV) the framerate will almost completely stop. Couldn't be worse unless it turned negative. So by not duplicating your screen that issue disappears. Something that really needs fixing. Duplicating your screen with every other application not on the UWP doesn't affect performance at all.

So far so good. Tried the benchmark with Ultra textures. 70-80+fps average which is great. In real scenarios while playing though there are some unexplainable or at least unjustifiable drops that feels like ~40fps. Even when there aren't anything going on. It still has some annoying stuttering from time to time. Definitely room for improvement here. Don't get me wrong. The game looks great. Character models, effects and lighting looks fantastic. The textures however. They look ok, but they do not nearly justify the 4GB VRAM usage for the 'Ultra' setting. Especially not considering the almost 60GB big storage requirement. There is some pretty low-res stuff in here. Even at the 4K setting.

Fix the stuttering that remains, keep working on increasing performance, fix the duplicated monitor issue and I'll accept this as a good title. The selling point from the store calling this a 'PC gaming performance showcase' is just laughable.

I've heard the game is a near ghost town. Really hope we can get cross-play added. Mouse/kb in Gears is barely an advantage in slower paced TPS games imo. Sniping may be a tad easier, but that's about it. I use an Xbone pad on PC and consistently carry teams /stealth brag. Cross-play could save this game from its inevitable death. Devs, please, I beg of you!

Better yet. Port it to Steam. Problem solved.

Hello –

We are releasing a new Title Update for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Tuesday March 29th in the morning and early afternoon hours Pacific Time. Below are the update notes that are included in this Title Update.

Ultra-wide resolutions (2560x1080 and 3440x1440) added to the game.

Pipeline state object cache optimizations to reduce hitches during level transitions.

Fixed a bug that could cause full Unreal garbage collect unnecessarily, leading to minor visual hitches.

Fixed a visual corruption bug that would rarely affect NVIDIA cards when changing resolutions and VRAM became over committed.

Added support for setting anisotropic filtering level through the INI file.

Fixed lack of mouse input when using lowest mouse sensitivity and fully zoomed in with sniper rifle and moving the mouse very small amounts.

Adjustments to low (1GB VRAM) texture setting.

Added ability to toggle an FPS counter. Press the “Delete” key at any time to turn the counter on/off.
