The Division - Review Thread

It's been out for 9 days lol!

And people have already gotten to the highest possible level.
For normal people this would be enough, but the people who buy these games are super demanding. They'll play this for 10+ hours a day. They want a year or more of content, not a month.

Personally, if you've played it for 40-50 hours and enjoyed yourself you've gotten your money's worth.

Man I don't know about you guys, but that IGN review just kinda ruined the experience for me. I mean they are the ones, and the only ones, that truly dictate which games I play. I went on ahead and got this game and I was really enjoying it for a while, then all of a sudden BAM! I just don't have any interest in playing it anymore after reading that review.

It really sucks too because all my friends are playing it and they're going to call me a little baby if I tell them why I'm not willing to play it anymore. But you know what? Screw them because I value other peoples opinions, especially those of videogame media kings like IGN, and when IGN says it's an "okay" game then it's just not worth my time. I only play games that get a 9.0 or better on IGN anyway.

Seriously though, I was having such a great time and now it's ruined.

I can't play Rocket League on Xbox One with my friends either. That game only got 8.0... so f-it! I'm lost and don't know what to play with my friends now.

For a second there I actually thought you were serious and it got me scared.

Just to add to that, a lot of the people who played 10+ hours a day were able to obtain high end gear exponentially faster than is currently possible.

I have 50 hours played and don't even have full high-end yet, let alone the stats I see out of people who played that much at launch.

Even if I stopped now, the game was well worth the $80 I paid for it. I get less than 50 hours out of a ton of stuff I paid $60 for.

I have been at "end game" level for a bit now and I don't see how this end game is such an issue now. You get challenge mode missions everyday for a total 50 pc plus the high end drop and the mats. You can still do the challenge mission as much as you want to for high end loot and more PC to get more loot as well as dark zone farming which all connects to getting PC to get that high end loot if you don't get a drop. When I compare this to vanilla destiny end game at the time it runs circles around it because this game actually rewards you for challenge mode.

Ahh idk we will see how the game fairs after the incursion. It is just way wayyy to early for so many complaints when the same people played vanilla destiny and like it and that loot system was awful

i've got one story mission left, hit 30 on tuesday, rank 25 in the dark zone.

game is enjoyable with friends, kinda sucks solo.

it's a filler until actual new destiny content. i've gotten my money's worth and i'll try and platinum it.

You took the words out of my mouth. I got to level 19 last night and just the thought of having to do more of those dull, repetitive side missions so I can get to 20 and do the next mission ugh. I think once I've completed the main campaign I'm selling it. At this point I just don't care about the loot in the dark zone, the post game stuff or future dlc. Ubisoft really need to learn how to put more creativity and variation in their enemy and mission types.

Hahaha.

"The thought of playing this game more ugh!"
"So I'm just going to play it more"

Sorry I just found this hilarious.

Seems this one's real divisive [pun?], in both comments here and the reviews. Either you really like it or really don't, not much middle ground. I'm happy to be in the former camp.

As for the Destiny comparisons, I don't get how anyone thinks this game is worse than pre-TTK Destiny (unless you really love Crucible). There's way more content, and despite side missions being repetitive, there's STILL more variation than Destiny. There's more story (though that bar was real low) , better matchmaking and there isn't a bunch of useless shit. The ability/talent/perk trees also have greater depth than Destiny's class unlocks.

I personally never care about review scores on games or movies because I have enough common sense to make my own decisions. I bought the gold edition based on my time in the closed and open beta which I enjoyed very much.

At Level 26/ DZ level 20 and have 40 plus hours already. I can definetly say I got my money's worth and that's not even including the expansions. Imo the game is FAR better then Borderlands and BL2 was. It doesn't beat Destiny for me though because imo Bungie just makes great fps games with awesome gameplay. Imo it compares more to Diablo 3....

I would rate it a 8.5/10

The reason Destiny had such longevity is because of the Crucible/Iron Banner and doing the raids a million times to get that full set of high level gear. This game doesn't seem to have either. I have no idea how it's going to get people to stick around longer than a few months.

Why does it need to hold them indefinetly?

They can come back when they add more content.

Buy to play online games like this shouldn't be burdened with the expectation of keeping you glued to it like a monthly mmo.

I agree with you, but that's not how a large part of the fanbase feels.
Destiny didn't set the bar(obviously), but it set expectations. People always want something new to do in these games.
A lot of gamers either think a game should be 15 hours or 100+ hours. There's no inbetween. That's rough.

I really wanted to like this game, but the more I play the more dead bored I am. If you somehow combined Destiny's gunplay with the structure of this game I'd have a hard time putting it down.

All I expect of an 'RPG' of sorts like this is to keep me enthralled all the way through. Even after 60 hours or more with games like The Witcher 3 or Dark Souls I am left wanting and sad that it came to an end. This game is making me yawn and struggle to pick it back up after only around 25 hours at level 19. The loot, feeling of reward, the encounters and the progression are all as bland as can be.

I think we got your point ;)

See I am complete opposite. I couldn't finish Witcher 3 because it bored me to tears. I think I have like 20 hours and I still have the game but no desire to even go back into that world because I thought the game was boring. THE division though has me coming back even after 40 plus hours...I just enjoy the gameplay story and missions far more then anything in Witcher 3.

Hey, to each their own. I enjoyed it for awhile, but now it's just a struggle to play when the rewards are so bland and samey. I do love the city and atmosphere, though.

To the people who are saying the game is boring, what could be done - in your opinion - to improve the game?

I just hit level 20 last night, crafted my first purple and have visited a little over half of the districts. Yet to enter the dark zone. There's still tons of things left for me to do in the game. Does the boredom come once you've hit max level and are in all high end equipment? Or are people fizzling out along the journey?

Haha, I realised the contradiction once I posted the comment. I figure I may as well finish it now that I'm only 3 or 4 missions from the end.

Yeah, I get it too, at least then you can say you beat it. Plus you probably dont hate it, just getting bored with it.

Still a super funny thing to read, haha.

More unique gear, more enemies and feeling like the rewards were better in general would keep me wanting to play. A better story with some characters you could connect with on at least some level would not hurt, either.

Witcher wasn't boring to me, but the loosy controls sapped some enjoyment plus I have totally lost where I am and the quests I have currently are not showing up on the map, and trying to get back on track has got me into areas over my head forcing death reloads. Just stopped being fun and more like work. Great environment though.

Division has a great environment too plus I never feel lost, and controls are great on PC. So still having fun.

I'm so glad Jim Sterling said all the things I was thinking after playing the beta. I'm glad I cancelled that PO.

I don't understand how a grind loot online RPG game works when all the enemies are just another dude with a gun. In Destiny you have varied and fantastic enemies, exotic locations, weapons -- I just don't understand how this even slightly works in a "generic guys with generic guns real world setting".

Are the people who are not enjoying the game playing with friends or using the Mm or are you guys playing solo?

Im playing solo, but match making for the story missions. Finding it a bit boring.
I did play the beta with friends and had a much better experience, but they didnt enjoy it enough to buy the game.

I can see this, especially the bolded. I do agree that the weapons and cosmetic wearables need to be improved so that you can tell the difference between a level 1 and a level 30 in high ends.

Even though the game is grounded in reality, I feel like they could do a lot to add to the sandbox in expansions, while retaining a Tom Clancy reality-grounded product. Even borrow from some other Tom Clancy franches. Some examples:

Grenade launchers
Rocket launchers (Not like Gjallahorn, I'm thinking Battlefield 4)
Remote hacking devices (For taking turrets offline, etc.)
Bring some splinter cell stuff in like that SC4000 that can launch electric darts, etc.
Not to mention the hundreds of real world weapons they could add that fall into existing archetypes (SMG, LMG, Assault Rifle) just to give people something new to play with.

I don't why it took me so long to realize this, but I think it's insane how leveling up gets you NOTHING. Literally nothing happens when you level up.

Is that not the number one rule of RPG based games?

You get access to another weapon slot at 4, another skill slot at a level I dont remember, another talent slot at 15 and 2 more at other levels.

You dont get little stat bonuses though, not that I know of anyway. But now Im curious to know if WoW gives little stat bonuses at every level, haha, I dont think I ever looked?

From a technical standpoint the game is on par if not better than TW3, the level of detail particularly on PC is insane. From a gameplay standpoint however, there is just too much copy and paste going on and there isn't that much to do at max level. Any semi serious gamer will blow through the content and be fully decked out within a fortnight and just be left with min maxing their gear.

There is zero incentive to play another character, there is almost no replay value. The Dark Zone was a massive disappointment and turned out to be nothing more than a item farming zone for disassemble crafting.

Enjoyed my time with it but there just isn't anywhere near enough content post game to keep me coming back.

Just hit level 30, and I STILL love the game, feel like the DLC will only add to the game at this stage. The only thing I feel it misses is the PvP content, but the game feels like it's built purely for story first.

The concerns of other players about end game content feeling weak is legitimate, but one that will be addressed quickly.

To the people who are saying the game is boring, what could be done - in your opinion - to improve the game?

* Make the boss fights more interesting and less predictable.

* More types of enemy. Feels like I am constantly killing Cleaners or Rikers.

* Give us stuff to do in the Dark Zone apart from extracting loot.

* PVP Squad Death Matches where four groups of 4 can hunt each other, kill each other and loot from dead corpse.

* Stuff to do in the city. I mean in ESO you have fishing, GTA Online there is loads of stuff to do. In this there is shooting rats, shooting dogs, jumping jacks and loot bags of crap stuff like ammo.

* Make max Level 250 or something, why 30? It's so easy and pretty quick to hit this.

It all feels like an unfinished game to me. Like a demo that doesn't ever end.

leveling up lets you use higher/better gear. And in this game thats way more important than any kinda stat increase or little perk they may give you.

Eh, not everything he said was on point:
It is, however, a fine example of why most third-person cover shooters have campaigns that cap out at six or eight hours. There’s just not enough dynamism in hiding behind small walls and popping off rounds at indistinct enemies for the length of time it takes to slog through an RPG.
I just feel like this is a little bit too general of a statement to put in a professional review. Mass Effect would like a word.

edit: Edited the Jim quote to include the "third-person cover shooter" portion

Bought this game based off hype 2 days ago and don't even know if I should continue anymore. Already tired of it at lvl 14. And I still don't understand the purpose of always online/online only. I feel like all these games should be single player and then add a online hub like MH games where you can choose to do your dungeons and stuff online. I don't get it.

Well, that's a given, but I mean any type of gameplay reward would have been nice.

Almost every one of Ubisoft's games have a skill tree that made leveling somewhat rewarding. It's just bizarre that this doesn't have one.

They moved it to the base of operations. Do you want 2 trees? Don't think they have done that before.

The have the base wings, but those upgrades are driven solely by credit acquired by side-encounters

It's not a huge deal, but a skill tree, or something of that sort, based off leveling would've been nice.

but by doing those side missions you're getting XP and in turn leveling up.

You dont really get anything from directly leveling up (besides unlocking new talent slots) but I dont really see it at as issue.

Its almost refreshing that they made getting stronger in a new and story fitting type of way.

Its not just "of you killed 10 guys, NOW we'll open up the shooting range for you to use." Instead youre actually gathering supplies building up your base which gives you more to do and access to resources.

Gaf goin Gaf. You guys crack me the heck up. Almost spat out my morn coffee. I've been gaming for 30, and the division is the pinnacle of what gaming has become, where it has come from. Granted, I'm only level 8, and wish I had more time to play, but this game is insanely good. Breath of fresh air for me. Best game I've played in awhile.

The pinnacle of gaming and it doesn't really excel at anything?
