Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Lmfao, I don't buy it. Not only is it a dumb idea to fragment their market but 4K gaming will not be cheap, and they said they want to stop taking losses on systems.

Console running games at 4k when currently the 1080p60fps is difficult to achieve? I will believe it when I see it. Maybe 4k 24fps. Or super expensive.

But if this is true, think about all the remasters that can be remastered again. So many games!

what the fucking shit.............they better have a god damn upgrade program otherwise this is going to suck ass.
(GameStop is going to love all this hardware they can resell)

no, 4K is 3,840 pixels by 2160. It's double the resolution of full HD but it's almost 4,000 pixels.
The underlined part is right and hence everything the other guy said, was right too. It's 4x the resolution and 3840*2160 is indeed 8,294,400.
Edit: Oh, and the "almost 4,000" part is right, if you meant the width.

For those asking for the PS5, what exactly is the expectation here?

Sony damn sure aren't switching architectures. It would literally just be another graphical upgrade. system features are just that, system features. Features that we can get via software updates.

If anything, Ps4's OS and network should just be the foundation moving forward. Work on the store and expand the catalog.

My expectations, full backward, no force forward compatible, bigger jump in performance, atleast 4.5-5 years gen.

E3 may be interesting if true. I just hope all games released right now for XBO/PS4 will work on the upgraded models. Even iOS/Android/Windows ecosystems do not guarantee it.

It's funny how if this is true, it basically brings the status quo back to Sony - Microsoft - Nintendo in terms of being graphical powerhouses even with the NX coming really soon.

let's see how the console market deals with the cellphone and tablet model

Consoles dont have the eclectic appeal and life penetration that cells and tablets have. People might not see the point

Adding a .5 version in between major revisions != cell phone model :P.

Its just a single luxury model for the rich and enthusiasts. Which is a really smart move.

My gut reaction is this sounds awful. One of the primary reasons I am a console gamer is the simplicity and elegance of knowing that the software I buy is optimized for the specific hardware I own. This just seems like a way for companies like MS and Sony to gouge me for money more often to play the "best" version of a game.

If I cared about that I'd game primarily on PC.

This.

Platform holders throwing out the window one of the major points why a lot of people gravitate to consoles.
Even if they garantee the current PS4 is forward compatible with PS4K games, I'm afraid the experience will be subpar.

This isn't something that's entirely in their control though. For example the PS4 being more powerful leads to the X1 receiving sub-par versions of some games. If MS releases a more powerful X1, then the PS4 version can be viewed as sub-par comparatively. So someone that bought a PS4 at launch, still isn't guaranteed the optimal experience even if Sony doesn't release a more powerful console.

So they probably should.

My feelings regarding this. If future games work on systems except their is a higher quality option then I'm all for it. Backlash from early adopters? Who cares, I'm one of them and I fully support this. The more choices the better.

No I cant. Its 2016 and tech moves far too fast now days. If you don't want to buy an upgraded console don't do it, but there's no reason the rest who want one should have to wait

Agreed if I want a more powerful console then cool. If someone else isn't ready yet then that's cool too.

But let's just hope we get the choice as I love the idea.

It should be Vega+HBM2.Or they will be obsolete again in a year.

Take the defensiveness on GAF earlier last week when Microsoft publicly stated their plans about multiplatform Xbox and iterative hardware.

Then hold it up against what some people in this thread are saying.

It's really quite disturbing.

Sony Too circa 2013 all over again.

I have zero doubt that some developers (which ones? Indie devs? Major devs? Devs who've worked with Sony before? Devs who are making PS VR games now?) have said this and I have zero doubt that Kotaku may have heard this and is reporting on it.

Are people...serious with this?

You realize the "leaving the console business" stuff had almost nothing to do with the iterative hardware bit and had everything to do with Microsoft taking the Xbox One library multiplatform. Right? I mean, you're not actually misrepresenting that discussion on purpose to make Sony look bad, are you?

You alright, mate?

So don't upgrade? Done deal.

This would really push me towards PC only where at least I can upgrade incrementally. I don't like even doing that too often but if consoles are gonna force me to do it anyway I might as well stay with the system that lets me upgrade more flexibly.

How can so many people, just on page one, be for painfully long console cycles?
Personally, I game enough on enough different devices that I didn't feel the need to get a PS4 until last summer, ~18 months after the console had launched.

There's nothing inherently stupid about wanting your device to be supported for as long as possible. And there's no hard rule as to when a generation "should" be ended.

The issue in this situation is that Sony is currently selling significantly better than the competition and is about to launch another "platform" this fall. It does make sense that they'd be planning for the next console.

Heck, I would not be sad or surprised if the PS5 was not as big of a leap as it was between PS3 --> PS4 (16 times more RAM like in the case of PS3 to PS4 would be 128G of RAM.....)

Now that I think about it, they may be using 'PS4.5' to represent a strong PS5 that is compatible with PS4 games, upscales/increases framerate/etc but also comes with a significant hardware upgrade and plays better-looking games. If it's launching end of 2018 or later, I have no complaint. I still wouldn't buy one at launch, but I wouldn't have a problem with it.

But this idea of mid-generation iterative hardware is a very bad idea and I'm doubtful that Sony is going in that direction.

Sony has also done this already before. People just forget. PSP 2000 had double the RAM of the original model.
And not a single game was PSP 2000 exclusive, afaik.

I would agree with this if there was a way for peple who own the last console to get a massive discount.

If not, this is just super scammy. Imagine upgrades every year that cost like 300-400$...

If they can reproject 60FPS to 120FPS in software what make you think they can't re render 1080P to 4K in hardware?

Cerny please no!!!!!

Damn, first MS and now Sony are both leaving the "traditional console" game. Or none of this ever actually happens. Or it does happen and the world doesn't end. Lol, exciting times. Made for some amazing threads too!

THIS.

If they pull this off, I am done with console gaming.

Okay, maybe Nintendo remains...

As such it would have a tiny install base and thus zero developer support wouldn't it?

But it would run the same games at 60fps and maybe 4k(but not really).

You are paying for prettier graphics only.

I don't think people really understand what this is lol. Hence, Chicken Little references.

Oh dear if true. PS4 is selling massively well still, just wait until the PS5 for for an upgrade.
sigh... Options = bad right?

lol.

Yea, @woelfel is my twitter handle. Glad someone can show you how much of a fanboy I am (lololol). I just find it funny that there are more open people to the idea in this thread than in the MS thread (and a lot of doom and gloom of MS' console business as a whole and this signaling their exit strategy and why devs won't do it type of talk). Granted I do wish for Sony to do it as I do think that hardware becomes stale quickly nowadays and my games should be my games on the platform of my choice and as I upgrade a device on that platform, it should follow. So you may think I don't like Sony in some fanboy world where I have something against them and it's not true. But yes, I found this thread hilarious.

There are a lot of people who are more adverse to the idea (as evidenced of this thread) and I understand their reasoning...I just don't think hardware evolutions should be held back because people feel that they don't have the latest and greatest (just as with phones).

Did you count the amount of people in the last thread and compare them to this thread? I really can't understand this type of reasoning, it actually uses no reasoning at all, just people spewing stuff they don't prove.

The main reason I don't believe it is because I don't think 4k is a major thirst between now and ps5.

Maybe it is, tho? Then I can see them doing it.

If they offer good upgrade solutions and optimizing for both platforms isn't too difficult for the devs I think I'm on board with this. My gut reaction was pretty negative, but if Sony handle it right getting a new console every 3-4 years might not be so bad. It's kind of a big if though.

Well...........its cheaper than upgrading any phone now a days lol.....dear god I hate paying full price for phones.
