PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

They won't make games that run at 20FPS. You'll still get a 30FPS game just with worse image quality and less effects - a game that looks no worse than it'd look on PS4 otherwise if PS4K never existed.

As for 4K, I can see a ton of games possible at that res on a GPU that's 2x what's in PS4.

we'll see. It's not like that never happened. Of course I don't say every game, but some games will suffer, I'm sure about it.

About the 4K, sure. Indies will probably play at 4K. Don't expect the big games though.

This seems like it absolutely would divide the userbase.

You cannot honestly tell me devs would only use this for better FPS
. Not a chance.

Of course not. The same way a lot of them haven't used the increased of power this gen for 60fps. I really hope 60fps will be a lot more common with the PS4K, though.

2x GPU power and this is supposed to be able to run 4k games? I guess we're in for another half-gen with sub 30 fps games in that case. I wish framerate took precedence over resolution.

CPU would also need a massive boost. I don't see how this could be anywhere near 499$.

Anyone who is seriously expecting anything other than small-scale "indie"-type games running at 4K is delusional.

probably some secret sauce scaling that really isn't close to native 4k but "good enough" for gaming

Well the OG version will run at a lower res and/or less effects, shorter draw distance, lower res shadows...and the list goes on. There are so many things devs can tone down in order to achieve stable performance. It's not like Sony is telling them to, (except for maybe a few cases) it's the developer's decision to favor graphics over performance and vica versa.

But this was probably stated quite a few million times before me.

And its likely that the optimization won't be the same as if there was only one model. I'm sorry, I have a really hard time thinking "NOTHING IS CHANGING" when clearly, this seems like a mini gen switch. The old gen gets fucked, there were millions of last-gen consoles out there at the turn of the gen, the last-gen ports still sucked for the most part.

Sony just shot themselves in the foot...

Or this is a really elaborate way of exposing leakers by creating a fake leak and seeing where it goes.

Please let me cling to what little hope I have left.

Seems like a worst case scenario for current PS4 users.
This looks like a mid gen console, basically a new platform on its own with cross gen compatibilty.
I'm not understanding the part about the CPU though, specs should be already well locked with the console about to go in production in a few months.

So we're looking at two Slim models this holiday season, one based on the PS4 specs at 299$ and the other with updated specs at 399$.

Better framerates, fine. Better resolution, fine. More of the other stuff that I don't really know about, sure, go nuts. Just no "you can play your PS1 games now!!!.... if you upgrade" type garbage and I'm good.

when did they start building PS4s for fall 2013? seems like they could launch this year still. E3 should be interesting. I'm ok with this rumoured info though. I do not own a 4K TV, and as long as my PS4 will play all of the upcoming PS4 games then i do not feel the need to upgrade.

Can't wait to see him buy 4K PS4Ks.

I laughed at this one.

That said, I would totally get a 4K to go with a 4K TV, while keeping regular PS4 for the 1080p TVs. Their iterations always run better, cooler and add a few hardware tweaks, so even withou tthe 4K aspect there would be a lot of "mid-gen" upgrade from a lot of people.

How is this even Remotely like DRM? Sony isn't coming into your home and setting your original PS4 on fire. This is Sony taking a risk and releasing an iterative machine in an era where people are comfortable speding 700 dollars on GPUs alone (that sell out in minutes and in the millions of units).

You're trying to compare hugely different markets. The console space doesn't even occupy the same hemisphere as the enthusiast GPU crowd.

Like, your attempted population comparison is absurd.

GOW4 is the real news

Right?

Games directly targeting the console had me, but GoW4 was like "Oh shiiiiiitttt!!!!" 8o

I really wanted this system to be more like higher PC slider setting though. It would suck tremendously if PS4 users got shafted if say certain game modes or features only work on this new version.

"Ellie, I guess we really were Left Behind".

lets abandon 35 millions users and make optimized games for only PS4k. let the losers with the PS4 play a glitchy mess in 20 fps...

haha people here need to relax, its not going to happen guys. it will most probably work like a PC, you have graphics settings. games will not worse than they are today on PS4.

Bring on the future Sony, I am in!

At first it won't happen. It'll take some time but if the ps4k is a success you know devs and sony are going to focus on developing for that version and by doing that inevitably the development for og ps4 games will suffer.

It's crazy to think that power wise, this Gen has the potential of doing a complete 180 depending on what MS does with the XB1.5 - This shit is happening way to quick but I'm super exited for E3 now.

I thought Palmer Luckey himself said he knew the PSVR was in devellopment before launching the OR kickstarter?

The move was in development before the Wii came out. I know because they had a usable demo on a demo disc, all you needed was a PSEye and a brightly colored ball. Point is a lot of companies develop tech but sometimes they sit on it and react to someone else entering the market. It's one of MS worst traits actually but Sony does it also. Lots of companies do.

If you look at things like PlayStation Move or PSVR, they're very closely modeled after announced/existing products.

but hasn't it been proven that they were working on Move (and in wand form) back in the EyeToy days before Wii was even a thing? and working on VR shortly after the inception of Move, via 2 x Moves taped to the Sony HMD?

Huh, I guess I'll just wait for the upgrade after the 4K one then. I mean I just bought a ps4 a month ago even with the suspicion of a slimmer version releasing later this year. More than likely my priority will be a NX later this year.

4k 60fps im in.

But that won't happen

really happy i didn't impulse buy a PS4 when they came out though.

Bad news, thats NOT happening with ANY console..maybe in 5 years, but even PC's struggle with this right now unless your PC is quad SLI 980 TI's.

4K downsampled to a 1080p TV screen actually works for me.

Would they let us turn off AA in those cases and get maximum FPS performance?

If so, I'm signing up.

I can't afford a 4K TV at the moment, but 4K downsampled to 1080p would be pretty fucking awesome in it's own right - especially with all the horsepower behind it.

This only works when the games are being rendered at 4K.

What they're talking about for this PS4K is to render at 1080p (or for the games that can't do that, something below 1080p) and then upscale to 4K. At which point, you're probably better off just having it output directly to 1080p and skip the needless upscale and downscale.

Uhhh I'm an "enthusiast" and I'm basically being forced to buy a new ps4 to play the most optimized games for this box. I don't even mind this concept if it were communicated on the front end, but when I bought my ps4 this was NOT the expectation.

Sony better have a hell of an upgrade program.

if you are an enthusiast of something you don't keep the same old crap around for 4 years lol. you should be excited. or don't upgrade and don't worry about it.

This really fucking sucks. I guess Sony figured "They spend $1000 upgrading their phones every year. Why not their consoles?"

The return of Arrogant Sony.

I am not sure whats the problem. this is the right thing to do. and I expect this to continue for the whole generation of consoles and new consoles as well.

I expect the PS5 to be an upgraded PS4k as well and so on that will let you play your current games. To be honest, I couldn't be much happier. if anything. I will not feel the regret of buying so many games and then knowing I will not be able to play them on a new console.

as long as your PS4 play those games as its intended, you shouldn't worry it. if you want to play the same games you already bought with a better graphics than your current console cant, then you can trade in and upgrade your system.

I am glad they finally went ahead with the Andriod / IOS /PC route . it should have been there since the PS4 and Xbox one was announced.

Exactly my thoughts and also argued as much in some threads about these leaks. If PS4 and Xbox One start being profitable well earlier than any other console before (6 months post-release for the PS4) there's no need to stretch a generation wayyyyyyyyy longer until the companies recoup some of the the investment made on those devices.
Yeah. I'm sure there are other contributing factors, but I doubt they'd be doing this without that hardware margin opening up the possibility.

2x GPU power and this is supposed to be able to run 4k games?
Maybe some indie games. It's certainly not going to run 1080p30 AAA PS4 games at 4k.
