PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

You guys think that games that were previously announced and been in development forever was just a hold to release them on PS4K?

Following trends of this gen they should call this PS4 Remastered.Joke is probably old.

I always buy Sony consoles very late in the cycle (almost last year of each gen) and Nintendo earlier, first two years. So this may actually be good for me but I share the negative impression of many, this is not what I want from a console.

You believe an iteration of a console which didn't have cutting edge technology will launch (also both of those consoles sold with loss which I believe Sony don't want to do anymore).

We get it, people aren't allowed to speculate in this thread. You obviously know more than everyone else here. What are you hiding?

If its any of those chips, which are based on 28nm parts, then the console is going to melt (assuming its the same size and form factor as current PS4). I am willing to bet they are using 14nm parts which would put it in the 480, 480x, or 490 territory.

You know, Raja Koduri mentioned they're trying to figure out how to make sure Polaris offers a "sweet" performance per dollar proposition for PC gamers. So basically they seduced Sony and Microsoft with finfet so they could ramp up production and bring down the cost of the Rx 400 series. Radeon just poisoned Sony's games business and arguably the entire console industry just to get back some market share.

.... well done.

I'm comparing them strictly in terms for performance--not power efficiency.

I don't really feel that way even though I am an early adopter. What if it's a case of "here's your game that totally looks and feels like a proper PS4 game would, here is the PS4.5 version which is the same as the PS4 version but with more effects unlocked, better draw distance. Like a multiplatform game that can utilize more graphical options on the PC.

It will never be like this for a simple reason : it's up to the developers and they won't spend resources optimising each one. They will optimise for 4.5 and downgrade for 4.

It's gonna be like Shadow of Mordor on PS4 and Shadow of Mordor on PS3 (instead of MGS on PS4 and MGS on PS3 for instance)

Fucking disrespect! Shame on you Sony! There are almost 40 millions owners out in the wild, so please hold this fucking shit to release in 4 years at least.

I just can't believe there are people who support this nonsense.

A lot of rich people on Gaf, just look at some of the home setups people post :p

People do realize 4K is for media and upres for 4K sets, right? You MIGHT see some Indy games at 4K30, but don't count on it.

The extra GPU and CPU power is for PSVR. The entire point of this is PSVR.

Side justification being able to make it 4K media compliant to synergize with their display bussiness.

I still want to believe this is not true...But if it turns out that it is a fact...Tell the fucks that you met with, that i , and i´d dare to say that probably millions of actual PS4 users, gonna be out of this, and out of everything that involves gaming and the brand Sony from now on. Goodbye PS4...You will be sacrificed for a PC or an NX (please Nintendo don´t screw it up this time...you´re the only hope left on the console industry)....And if finally all the gaming industry takes this fucked up path...i guess there are a TON of games of seventh generation and before that awaits for playing for the rest of my life (hope it will be lotta decades)...I won´t be part of this BS never!

Right. But isn't 4k gaming the objective here? If so, none of those existing off the shelf parts will come close. Not in performance, not in efficiency.

Edit: but then again I didn't think there would be a mid cycle console refresh so what do I know?

"You have to pay $500 every three years to keep up with the Joneses on console. Meanwhile, I buy one $700 rig and it lasts me six years."

what a stupid logic.
you can also buy the ps4 and last for 7 or more years, just like people keep upgrading their whenever they want to

Might be time for me to get out of console gaming and just stick to the older PC stuff that I still enjoy. VR. Updated consoles every 2-3 years. Add the fact that this generation has been a huge disappointment for me so far. Really not all that motivated to continue on this path. I'm more curious to see what Nintendo is offering now but I'm honestly not expecting much.

I have a noob question guys, about 4k and upscaling... Why the fuck is this necessary ??? It's a 2x ratio.. There is nothing to upscale it should just look good. Especially at the same screen size..

I suspect 4k TVs won't understand HDR and wider color gamut if the input is 1080p. So if even a game is 1080p, it should be easy for the renderer to output a higher dynamic range and wider color gamut, then upscale to 4k. It's also something the regular PS4 should be able to do depending on how flexible the HDMI chip is on it, so it's my best guess.

Another thing is games might be rendering at a slightly higher resolution than 1080p but still not 4k, so a console-side upscale would be necessary there too.

I mean on hand it's great that they're offering a power upgrade for people that want it. But at that point you might as well just get a PC. It's a slightly higher initial cost, but if it's going to cost $400-$500 every ~3 years to upgrade to the newest version of the console to avoid having absolutely terrible performance than that basically eliminates the one benefit of console gaming that actually appealed to me. I liked that you could buy it and be content for 5-10 years without having to worry about drastically suffering performance for most games throughout the life. Instead, we've gotten hardly any good first party games and they're already abandoning the platform for a higher spec model? I know they would probably release on both SKU, but the OG PS4 will probably shit performance/gutted games compared to the shiny new expensive model.

Probably going to sell my PS4 and just invest in a PC upgrade at this point as it seems like this incremental console future is finally becoming a reality..

It rubs me the wrong way that we're hearing about an upgrade when most Sony first party studios haven't even released a game yet and PS+ is a shell of its former self.

Pretty much.

Fuck Sony throwing this kind of curveball when the ps4 barely has a library as it is.

If you've seen 4K on a good TV you would understand. I'm getting this damned thing for movies alone - the gaming is just a big bonus. AND I don't have to ever deal with W10 - another huge bonus.

I'm Apple and Sony now for foreseeable future. Was afraid I'd actually have to upgrade to a W10 PC someday. Not necessary now

This thread is moving too fast, but I'd just like to note that it really doesn't make any sense to take an estimate based on a AMD GPU architecture, use that estimate to multiply the FLOPs of an AMD GPU, and then compare that directly to an NV GPU.

It makes much more sense to compare it to AMD, which would put it at about Radeon 280X level.

How good is that Radeon 280x when it comes to powering a Vive or Oculus headset?

Exactly, I'm afraid a lot of people are going to have to get on-board with this new reality.

This is great news if true, no more 5 - 6 year wait on new hardware.

Every 3 years is perfect.

This is bullshit. Consoles don't even acquire a worthwhile catalog in 3 years. The first year or two is all up-rezed cross-gen bullshit. Year 3 and beyond is when they really start to bloom.

Legit just got my PS4 August of last year...unless there's a nice trade-in scheme or something like that, I dunno how I feel about this. This gen just started...can't have a new machine in it already. If we are just gonna PC-ify consoles, I might as well just stick with PC.

Can a real developer here give us an indication of whether development costs will increase? If they do how much would it be?

Eh, that's the tightrope that companies have to walk with this kind of tech advancement. Other sectors have accepted this kind of iterative design in hardware, but it's never really caught on in consoles. How do you make the new product appealing without rendering the existing product obsolete when you still need that install base? In other sectors, I think the fear is mitigated simply because the evolution is constant. No matter when you buy, you know that something newer is right around the corner, and that's fine. But with consoles, there's always been this expectation that hardware is meant to last for the duration of a 5+ year lifespan. Peripherals that disrupt that rarely catch on.

But if both Sony and MS are doing something like this, I guess the times are changing.

The thing that is different with consoles is that they will have to ensure more goodwill for a user base that is not used to this. They can't simply ignore hardcore people right now, if they simply fall back to arrogance and not talking to us their outward look would change drastically.

Now will they bother calling it PS4K or just call it PS4 slim otherwise that would imply 4K gaming when it ain't got the grunt for AAA.

Someone needs to make a video like this but for PS4K
