So coming out of the weekend, the gap between Deadpool and BvS is now 24 million. Lol. It might be half of that or less by next weekend.

Warner Bros beancounter sprints upstairs.

"It wasn't 70%!"

It's even worse internationally right now.

... I'm kinda happy Zootopia's Sunday in China actually beat BvS there. I'm extremely curious to see how it does in Japan later this month.

is it really not going to beat deadpool domestically

REALLY

That has to be the biggest surprise this year. Deadpool grossing more domestically than a Batman and Superman film.

I know it came up before, but I can't remember what came of it, but has anyone dug out the predictions for Deadpool from months ago? Was anyone remotely close to calling how successful it has been?

Deadpool could get to 370 before it leaves. Depending on next weekend's drop (the last one before Jungle Book opens huge) BvS might not do much more than 350.

Hell, it might not hit 350 now. It's not particularly likely it fails to meet that benchmark, but I think it's possible.

Do we know the international drop for BvS?

67%

Also, Zootopia actually went up in a lot of places.

Notable holds also include the UK where the sophomore session dipped 24%, for a gross to date of $18M. Germany, in its 5th frame, is set to re-claim the No. 1 spot in terms of admissions, per Dis. The cume there is $26.8M. Belgium, Poland and Sweden posted increases of 116%, 10% and 6%, respectively. Australia also jumped by 1% with a cume of $11.1M. The film has held the No. 2 spot in Australia, Hong Kong, Korea and Russia.

I can't even right now

How do you fuck up a goddamn BATMAN AND SUPERMAN MOVIE so hard

I was having this conversation with my friends. It's baffling. It's like you have to TRY to make a film like this fail.

They have 75 years of great material to look back to! They have amazing animated material at their disposal! Why is it so difficult?

Is BvS going to gross more than 850m worldwide?

Because the thought that no China release is the only thing saving a movie with BATMAN AND SUPERMAN from being outgrossed worldwide by a 50m Deadpool movie is hilarious beyond belief.

It's not going to clear $900m for sure. That might be on the low end, but it's in the cards.

To be fair, none of these producers seem to seriously consider even semi-faithful adaptations of pre-existing stories.

Marvel and Fox basically just take two ideas and a title (Winter Soldier, First Class). That's as close as it gets.

It didn't deserve to. Deadpool was a fun movie that was extremely faithful to the source material.

B v S feels like a Art and Philosophy major was given unlimited funds to show us their take on the DC universe.

Deadpool earned more than Dofp and BvS?

BvS will beat Deadpool worldwide, but not domestically.

Deadpool is now the highest grossing X-Men related film worldwide and domestic. Domestic it isn't even close.

More like an art major that took one class of philosophy.

Amazing that a year or two ago I was super hyped from a teaser with Superman glaring with glowing red eyes at a armored Batman while barely caring that an obscure comics character was getting his own movie.

Weird but i suddenly feel like some m & ms.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein speaking on BvS 2nd weekend drop:
We’re not concerned with the drop. No matter how you slice it, to get to $52 million on any given weekend is an enormous accomplishment. We’re most focused on where we are in total. And our global number is huge.

52M (actually 51M) is not an enormous accomplishment when it represents a 69% drop.

I guess his job is to spin it as much as possible.

And also glosses over how huge the drop overseas is as well. China basically dumped the movie in favor of a popular domestic film and they don't have agreements to keep a film in for X weeks. If it does bad you get dumped.

Fire Singer and Mark Millar and let the Deadpool guys handle everything

I might have said this earlier in the thread, but at least that's not *quite* as ludicrous as his spin from last week ("doesn't take itself seriously," "it made $100 more OW than we thought possible).

BvS weekday grosses return back to earth today now that kids are back in school.

Expect Monday to be in the $3.5M range, down over 75% from last Monday.

Some fun charts to visualize the closing gap:

No way. Just... absolutely surreal. Even with my wildest hopes and predictions did I see this coming.
An R-rated superhero film starring a cult character spin-off from the critically savaged Wolverine solo film that was stuck in development hell and made on a comparably shoe-string budget with no 3D ticket prices...

...Holds better than Batman v Superman on a 2nd week where its toughest competition was a month-old talking rabbit movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, and God's Not Dead 2.

There had to be some crazy person out there who called it.

I'm sure everyone involved with Deadpool is still going nuts over its success.

dat spin.

won't be long before they "amicably part ways" with zack snyder going forward with Justice League.

The moral of the story is that the rabbit will win despite slacking.

Seriously though, BvS was never an ensemble movie. Its just a Superman movie that happened to feature Batman and Wonder Woman. No surptises its dropping like a rock.

Like...comparing its run with Deadpool, it was clear that Deadpool was a deadpool movie. Its why it nailed it out of the park, it never pretended to be anything more.
