Atlus handling the western localization of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

This is her pop star outfit

While I find the outfit ridiculous (and tacky) for an idol outfit, the replacement is too plain jane looking too. I expect better from Idoru culture.

I wonder what they are going to do to this chick.

Also I'm more worried about rumblings I've heard that they might remove the hot springs DLC altogether for the Western release.

Who thought it's a good idea to sing on stage wearing basically only underwears? Glad they changed that.

Just like with FE:F, the localization choices are mostly harmless (not sure what the DLC being cut is, but wasn't it just bikini costums for all the characters?) , but just weird and inconsistent. Nintendo of America has been like that recently. Bikinis in an M rated Fatal Frame game are a no-no, but the same company funded Bayonetta 2. This game has JP voices only, is about the Japanese idol industry, and is a complete 180 from how the game was first introduced leading to alienation of both certain FE and SMT fans. Yet the feel the need to change weird minor things for a mass audience that will never be interested in this game. I don't mind you changing your games, Nintendo, just be consistent with it. This is all so random.

Here is 20 minutes of gameplay from the English version

I haven't watched it yet myself, but I'm sure people will find lots of things that got censored lol
Had a chance to actually play it and I can confirm that it was pretty great. Felt more like SMT than FE, which I found fine. Stringing attacks is going to be interesting. Spells now level up. Still had some difficulty for it, even with it being a demo that took place, almost died on the mid boss. Overall, the game felt great, but it will come down to the story if it will actually do well.

Also, the load time for battles were a bit long, only real downside.

So wanted to throw this out there in case there is some misinformation to what the Hot Springs DLC actually is for #FE.

These are actually Variety/Promo show style ( think a slice of life with the Kardashians). You can actually pick the pair interactions, there's nothing here like your atypical onsen scene infact. You have to give it to #FE for really sticking to it's entertainment media motif.

There's honestly never been a game like this ever made, and it's one unique gem for sure.

But isn't one the first dungeons in the game all about gravure idols? People were talking about how there was nothing egregious enough for Nintendo to change in #FE (which I always refuted), but here we are. Wonder how that kind of stuff will be managed.

Ayup, its the first dungeon in the game and I'm really curious to see how they manage that if the swimsuit dlc was too raunchy.

We're not going to get this, are we?

Damn it, when did swimsuits become too perverted for the mainstream? :(

So we can expect them to leave in honorifics despite translating to a language that doesn't use them? Goody.

Aside from that though I've never had much problem with Atlas translations so this should be fine. Probably better they do it then NOA/E since they made the game.

Only Persona does this, because that game's for weeaboos. So that might be the case here too, but Nintendo might not want that.

And Atlus doesn't "leave the honorifics in", sometimes they're changed to fit with American levels of politeness in talking to someone (last name-san -> first name-kun/chan).

I'm still clinging to the hope they won't remove it :(
Leave it an optional paid DLC Nintendo!

Never understood the complaints here. The games take place in Japan. In Japan, even when speaking English, you're very likely to hear honorifics.

An original story told in native English about Japan will still likely have some honorifics and words that you don't understand. That story can't possibly be poorly localized, it just requires you to acknowledge that it takes place in a different country.

From Serenes Forest:

Character profiles: Mostly untouched, surprisingly. They still have their three measurements and blood types there. Their ages are indeed raised, but it affects all three of them. They're now all 18-year-old 3rd year students. They also keep Maiko's love of alcohol.

So the 4chan leak is 4/4 now (Since Tsubasa is one of those three). Leak is pretty much true at this point.

Yep, I was personally already convinced when they guessed the name correctly, but there is absolutely no doubt that 4chan post was the real deal. Wonder if they'll actually openly talk about the Hotspring DLC being removed or just remain hush about it, even though their special edition advertises DLC that some enthusiasts could assume would include the Hotspring stuff.

Tsubasa is going to be the best! BEST!

I'm a bit bummed out over no hot springs dlc and weird little changes that the game's getting but it's fine it's fine because this game will be great.

As a general rule I don't like any serious localization and prefer media to be subtitled and literally translated and, if there's a culture-specific reference, to either stick up a footnote or treat me like an adult and expect me to look it up. If you're going to drop the catchphrase of a 1970s Japanese TV show, don't change it, leave it as is and allow me to actually learn something I didn't know, rather than dumbing it down for me by changing it to something more familiar. I liked the Ace Attorney games, but I can guarantee I would've preferred the literally translated adventures of Naruhodo Ryuchi and Mitsurugi Reiji to the localized adventures of Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth.

I know that I'm in the minority on this, but I wish more Japanese games would have a Japanese language and subtitle option with a literal translation for those of us that prefer that.

I'm glad to see this game has a Japanese track, something Nintendo is hit or miss on (Star Fox Zero, looking your way). I hope I like it, I suspect I will.

What's the 4chan leak?

I'll just quote what I posted in the other thread:
Well, not directly related to this thread, but it's the most currently active TMS #FE thread:

It's been confirmed that though Nintendo is publishing the game, Atlus USA will actually be the ones localizing it. This is another point in the 4chan "rumor"'s favor, all of which was posted before the Nintendo Direct that announced TMS #FE:

sP2PV92.jpg

Nintendo of America has also stated that there will be in-game content changes (which we already knew, because Tsubasa Oribe's idol outfit was modified). With all that, I think we might need some elaboration on the "Hot Springs DLC" point, 'cause I think there's a real good chance we're not getting it and it's not one of the DLC included with this special edition.

Dunno why they want a T rating so bad. This is going to bomb and teens aren't going to be ones buying it anyway. Smells like a huge misread of the market.

Oh cool.

Can't wait to hear the endless amount of bitching over localization changes this time >_>

sigh...

Nintendo deserves it if they are going to be this dense about things. It won't matter in the long run since it doesn't affect sales but for me it's pretty much time to move on from NOA. Once this year of Wii u releases finishes I'm done. Ive already been forced to import fatal frame v, XCX, #Fe, Fire Emblem Fates and bravely default(not noa, I know) so I might has well just stick to Japanese releases exclusively if I end up getting an nx. I'll probably in Japan for most of its lifespan anyway.

To be fair to NOA on this game, this game looks like it was made with every intention of not selling it in the west.

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
True, which begins the question: Why do everything in your power to make it sell even less?

Yep. I find this weird. I felt the same about Fatal Frame costume changes too. It was a distinctly Japanese M rated horror game about a suicidal gravure idol. Mainstream it aint. If you're going to the trouble of bringing something like that over, keep it intact. Anything else just annoys the fanbase and generates bad publicity.

Is it really going to have much of an impact? Optional paid content doesn't strike me as nearly the fire starter that the petting minigame was for Fates.

Well I bought the Japanese version instead and plenty of other people seem pretty turned off by the lack of a dub. Whether that really amounts to much I can't say but I certainly don't think it's going to sell more copies to soccer moms or whoever else these changes are supposed to appeal to. I mean taken at face-value this game would be a slam dunk day 1 purchase for me due to the development team, the visuals, music, combat, setting, themes, etc but now it ended up being a used import purchase instead.

How many fence sitters who aren't being directly targeted by this game's incredibly specific nature are going to jump on because they no longer have to worry about girls showing some skin? That seems fairly low on the list of things that are going to turn off a general audience when it comes to this particular title. They earn some brownie points from twitter so I guess that's worth enough for them.
