Emily Rogers: Why you should be excited about NX’s software output

Just remember to expect nothing more than a reveal date to be announced next week.

Don't you love announcements of announcements?

Eh I expect more. Nintendo is talking to investors. I mean Iwata felt so desperate last year that he told them about NX. Investors are a fickle, entitled group of people who need to have their ass powdered. I expect Kimishima to powder their ass a little bit.

Nothing mind blowing but "enough."

He'll announce the next mobile game, which investors care more about. You know that Nintendo's stock price would triple the second they announced going 100% mobile.

Sure, I think that's a given but I also think they'll give a little bit more info on NX outside of the announcement date.

"Here's some upcoming Miitomo costumes."

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm just naturally skeptical with whatever Nintendo decides to do moving forward. Hopefully, they knock out of the park showcasing the console at E3.

Does Trev have another rumored 3DS game? I thought they were all revealed now, with the only question mark at the time being Torte City aka Kirby. Granted Style Savvy wasn't formally announced yet but it did get a codename match, but if that's the one you're referring to can you imagine the reaction? 😂😂😂

There's a holiday game codenamed "N-Stars" that hasn't been shown yet.

However, if a game like DQ7 was delayed (speculated) and DQ8 might be 2017 now, it's possible the lineup has changed since and that more games could be pushed into 2017.

He wasn't " desperate " and he didn't announce it on the investor's meeting.
It was announced during the DeNa presentation purely because people might have thought they were moving to mobile and abandoning consoles once they announced they were making mobile games.

This sounded interesting for me:

This means back to the roots with core games.
It was so surreal and hype, after years of catering to nontraditional audiences, seeing that thread title pop up one day, "Miyamoto throws shade at casual gamers" and there was a pic of his zoomed in eyes making an angry expression, lol

It came off as desperate imo.

And I stand corrected on when he mentioned it.

Well they are. The only reason they changed from the Smash Invitational was because it was only meant to advertise Smash 4. The NWC was a natural evolution of that.
Check your source dude. The WGRD link you gave linked to a MyNintendoNews article which then linked to the actual CNET article, which at the bottom says:

"A previous version of this story said Nintendo plans to hold its World Championship next year. This is incorrect; Nintendo has yet to say whether it plans to hold another World Championship in the future."

So no, NWC 2016 is not confirmed.

I stand by my opinion then, that I think they will do something different.

why did you feel it was announced out of desperation if i may ask? it announced to squash all the rumors floating around at that time.

Well for one I felt those rumors were completely ridiculous and didn't believe them for a second. There was very little reason to think Nintendo was done with consoles at the time regardless of the Wii U's suckage.

As for the announcement, it just seemed odd to announce it outside of a direct or an actual gaming event. It struck me as odd and factored into my opinion of him being desperate to get that fact out there. Also, if he was doing to quell the rumors than that to me sounds like a little desperation.

With that said, I'm not saying he WAS desperate. I want to make it clear this is what I believe and I don't know why exactly he made the decision to say what he said and as far as I know none of us know the exact reason...including Rey.

All of this can be explained by the investors' desires. Basically, if they didn't clarify those plans it would have had an effect on their stock price. The speculation might have inflated it, but then once the truth was revealed it may have shot way down all at once.

I think that the next mario game will be the game to show off the capabilities of gfx NX. The reason why i think that, is because they said that this game will be sync in time.
(I know that nintendo never show the most of there devices in the beginning...)

Ah. That's right. I thought that was partially identified as a Mario Party esque game potentially, given previous codename patterns? Either way, I expect we'll see it at E3. ☺

But we do know, Iwata said so himself why:

“NX was announced as a new platform alongside the DeNA venture. The NX was announced then to indicate that we are not retreating from game platforms and will continue the hardware business… Normally, the announcement would’ve been made later. It was like revealing a magic trick ahead of time.”

You got to look at it this way, people have been asking for Nintendo to make mobile games for a while now, other people have been dooming Nintendo to 3rd party for decades now, the Wii U is failing. All of the sudden Nintendo announces it's going to make mobile games in a big press conference. What do you think would have happened if Nintendo announced it was making mobile games in a big press conference and didn't mention they were working on another console?

The whole Internet would have been "Nintendo to retire from console making?" or "Nintendo drops consoles, switches to mobile!" or something inflammatory like that. Not to mention that things like that affect their stock.

They weren't desperate when they so casually announced the NX, they were forced to.

I'm kinda pissed that they moved multiple WiiU games to NX.

Don't they do stuff like that every console generation though? It seems pretty common.

Star Fox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Cubivore, and Resident Evil Zero were moved from N64 to Cube.

Super Paper Mario and Donkey Kong Barrel Blast were moved from Cube to Wii. Twilight Princess received a Wii version.

Pikmin 3 was moved from Wii to Wii U.

Let's be honest here. They knew the situation the Wii u was in that first year, and thus what that meant for their internal teams next games 2 or 3 years down the line. There is a 98% chance these games never started actual production as Wii u games.

Those systems weren't as wanting for games as the WiiU is though. It really feels like total abandonment when it comes to the WiiU.

Nintendo software aside my main hope as a Xbox One owner is alot of the JRPG and games that were once PS4 by defualt get put on the NX.

What would you do if you were a game company?

Would you use your resources to make a game for a console that isn't selling, that won't sell, and that's going to be replaced before the game is ready for release?

Or do you just move it to the new system knowing that it will help it achieve launch sales, gather momentum and general public acceptance?

The latter is the obvious choice. They need a good supply of games for the NX, they need games that cause impact on launch. If having Zelda NX, Metroid Whatever, Mario Graphical 64 shown or announced at launch, that causes a ripple effect of positive reactions which increases hype and demand for the console, generating good momentum that keeps the system selling.

The WiiU announcement was horrible. While good games, having NSMBU as their Mario system showcase did not help them at all. And that Nintendoland reveal left for last, god... I still remember the disappointment.
Again, NL could be the best game ever, but that's not the type of game you showcase at your Efucking3 presentation. People want AAA games, guns, explosions, RPGs, fantasy, scifi in an E3 presentation...

Not fucking fireworks...

And lastly, a few years from now, when you're enjoying your awesome unannounced NX games, you won't give a crap how long the WiiU lasted. You'll just remember all the good games you played.

I'm not saying that what they're doing is wrong, but as someone who bought my WiiU for SSBros. and the promise of more I'm allowed to feel a little peeved. Also for exclusives their software sells incredibly well. Pokken outsold SFV. PS4 has 30+ million consoles sold but they don't have any exclusives that sold as well as Splatoon or Mario Maker.

Correct. Apparently past Mario Party games had been given the codename "Stars," and the speculation was that it would be amiibo-related because of the amiibo product name (NVL).

I'll take that. I'll take ANYTHING.

That's all some of us want. We want to hear them give just a few sentences on the NX is more than anything they've said over the past year and two months.

Have we ever gone this long between an initial announcement of a system to the second time of them talking about the system? Its been OVER a year and two months since Iwata first announced the NX.

At the very least...
+there being no successor to the Vita
+NX Handheld being "last refuge" for non-mobile Japan
+NX Handheld <----> NX Console relationship
=potentially better RPG library for NX Console?

Yes please. A bigger and better RPG library would do wonders for the future of the Xenoblade series.

Don't forget the fact that Japan is the only region where PS4 didn't overtake Wii U in less than a year. Nintendo can actually be quite competitive there with a good library, and since JRPGs perform best there and Xbone isn't even a factor, Japanese support might be key for them

I wanted to make sure, is the Investors Meeting Tuesday night for Americans?
Nintendo's FY 2015 Financial Results Briefing is tentatively scheduled for April 28, 2016 (JST), 09.00 or 10.00 AM JST. This corresponds to Pacific time:

The news conference should be on April 27 (JST) however. Usually at 10.00 AM JST. So just subtract a day from the above countdown for that.

Or 8PM (aka just add three hours to PST) for those in EST. :)

So how will this meeting work? Will it be published in english immediately or will we have to wait? Will someone be live tweeting what's going on?

The prepared presentation in English I believe will be available in little time. The English translation of the Q&A session will take a few days to be published, though the Japanese version is usually up very quickly.

I do not believe anyone will be live tweeting from the financial results briefing as that seems to be prohibited. From the news conference people will likely live tweet however.

I would suspect we'll get a release in English (like with the 3DS or Wii U) alongside their financial results on Wednesday. It will say they are going to launch NX in this fiscal year and that they will talk more about it at a time (either an event in May or at E3).

A list from Emily made weeks ago. Not everything is there but you get the idea.
