Overwatch Beta Thread: Cheers Love, The Beta's Here!

Does anyone know what the total download size is on the PS4? I've done the initial 2 point something GB download but now it's installing game data, if it's downloading more then I need to cancel and wait until I'm on my unmetered bandwidth.

I haven't had a problem facing Bastion yet, and that's without focusing on classes that counter him. If you're a long range class just strafe between cover and taking shots at him, otherwise flank him, lob grenades, other abilities, etc.

Also so far I've seen two dumb ass arguments take place between others in match chat. While I don't understand why people put energy into shit talking and insulting others in general, I really don't get it when it's unranked pre-release beta and stats are getting reset anyway. Like damn just have fun y'all.

I'm sure in the PS Store it said 8.4gb

Tried one quick game and panic picked Reinhardt, lol people loving run into him so they can be swatted away like flies

Am looking forward to properly playing this later

How do those highlights work in the main menu?
What are the requirements that those show up there?

They are basically your personal Plays of the Game. If you get picked as Play of the Game in a match, your Highlight will be the same clip. If not, you can at least watch yours in Highlights.

She can lay 6 turrets down? I thought it was 3?

3 at the start of a match and then 3 more on a cooldown timer.

I LOVE D.VA, but the problem I have with her is her primary fire just seems so weak?

How do you guys use her?

She's best at close range. Boost in, run into the enemy (which knocks them back and does a small amount of damage), open fire, boost out. Wash, rinse, repeat.

No one has an answer to D.Va and Junkrat on consoles. I've seen literally no one moving like I do with DVa and thinking she won't die quickly when shooting, use the boost to escape and the shield to charge the boost, rinse repeat.

I've seen no one jumping with the c4 with junkrat and it's gotten me out of shootouts faster than any other character. DVa seems to be the main.

Tracer is all right but I need more feedback from her gun, it feels like I'm doing nothing when it clearly has some strength to it

Zarya would be so much better if the buffs lasted a bit longer. Also can't seem to get used to the range on her gun. Falls off way shorter than expected

It's so hard to play once I get home so I have to take every opportunity I can get haha!

Thankfully I have my own office and I can play during downtime :p

NOONE MUST EVER KNOW

Zarya takes some getting used to, but when she clicks...she's one of the most sneakily devastating characters in a game.

Don't think of her as a main tank. She's a support tank. Her ult combos so well and can help wipe a team.

I keep getting the "Failed to connect to game server" error. Anyone else hitting this consistently?

This is on XBO.

Character movement is so quick coupled with most guns being projectiles and not hitscan (which makes aim assist useless against strafe evading since all your shots will miss) I feel like xim4 users will utterly annihilate pad users on consoles. Xim4 users have an inherent advantage in all shooters but in Overwatch a good tracer/genji/junkrat that can 180 turn on the spot and instantly lead their projectiles correctly will decimate everyone :p

Close range. Think shotguns.

you gotta boost in close and assault from short range.

Ahhhhhh thank you so much.

I don't think it's a better game overall than TF2, it's not as skill based but it will be competitive due to Blizzcon and the fact that it'll receive a lot more support than TF2 receives at this point.... but it is quite fun still.

The only issue I have is that I think the general movement of characters feel quite off which makes the aiming feel off. I'm not quite sure what it is or how to put it but I don't experience this in other games. I mean try using the sniper on someone and see how quick they move around...even the big enemies.

I think the delta in speed of classes should be a bit bigger.
I'm not sure what makes TF2 more skill based :P
Yup. Can't wait for an appropriate ranking system and competitive queue. People are trying to play this like it's a Looney Tunes deathmatch. I had to walk away from the game tonight because of it.

The game is stellar though. Can't wait to play with you all eventually. Should help.
Competitive opens up at level 25. Don't worry.
I'm still trying out different characters (really liking Bastion, Widowmaker, Mercy, and Soldier), but does anyone else feel like Soldier's ult is a bit weak if you're actually a good player who can aim?
Feels like it's great for newcomers to the genre or people not used to playing FPS games, but it doesn't increase damage, right?
Soldier's ult is one of the strongest dps ults in the game. Doesn't matter how good your aim is, you can't just hold down the fire button and hit every single bullet normally. Even a highly accurate robot would be limited to 3 round bursts in a normal situation, but when you can hold left click you can mow down an entire team.
Game is pretty good, but man it falls into the same pitfall as so many other team FPSers:

Support is extremely advantageous to the point of being necessary.

There's only four support heroes.

One of them stinks in comparison to the others (Symmetra.)

And only one of them has the healing capability to keep a tank up under sustained fire (Mercy.)

So you chances of winning is heavily altered on this single Mercy champion being on your team. And she's boring as hell. She's the medic from Team Fortress 2. Yaaay.

I mean, even if every support champion was extremely capable you only get four to choose from. Maybe that's the testament to how boring support roles can be. Unless you're the engineer from Team Fortress 2.
How do people post stuff like this after an hour or two and not realize they know nothing? Lucio and Zenyatta are very powerful supports, Lucio fills the same role as Mercy EASILY and all 3 have ults that are valuable for pushing or defending a push in the exact same way. Symmetra I think should be ranked as Defense rather than support, but it's funny you say she sucks - she recently got a big nerf because she's had the highest winrate of all heroes ever since beta started, and she is STILL absurdly good. Use turrets to either make death rooms in flank paths or place them around in places that will not get incidentally killed but will snare/damage people pushing through, they're also great for letting you know if someone is trying to flank you or go through back channels (you get a ! over them when someone is being damaged by one), and her left and right click attacks both do absurd damage.
That's D.VA not Mei.
Mei is the Chinese Ice Girl.

I had no luck with D.VA at all.
I shout 20 shots into a Tracer and she literally didn't lose any health.
Felt pretty stupid at that point, but eh, 20 tickrate and lag will do that I guess.
D.va has rapidfire shotgun style attacks. Tracer is tiny. Unless you were in her face like melee range your odds of doing anything to Tracer with D.va is almost nonexistent. I saw some other gaffer post a twitch stream during the last beta weekend and play dva while trying to peek at people around a door, so I realize now people actually try to do things like this. Don't. Dva needs to be IN THEIR FACE to accomplish anything other than being a body to shoot at. Shift and E will get you in there. If you want to play farther back, don't be D.va.
I've had a couple of turn-the-game-around ults as Zarya now. Proper teamplay can completely decimate a whole team in seconds!
Queen Zarya ult = best ult in the game.
Sort of. Each map usually has three flanks to each choke so if a defending team pushes out to far it's really easy to get to the backline with the mobile disruptors like Tracer or Reaper. The hard counter to lock down a flank is a Symettra death rooms. They're impossible for a solo disruptor to break through. Then you have maps like Anubis and Hollywood where the flanks enter from near one choke to get to the backline behind the choke.

The map design is crazy. They let the heroes be the stars of the game.
Yeah, Symmetra is so good at covering flanks, and all of the chokes have at least 1 other path around, perhaps hero limited though. Anubis used to be FAR worse before they fixed it.

They actually nerfed Zarya's shields because 2 zaryas shielding each other was ridiculously good. It just takes practice, Zarya was one of the ones I wanted to play heavily before I touched the game, then I thought she sucked when I first used her, then I went back and forced myself to play her more (along with every other hero) and she's by far my favorite tank. I still pick Reinhardt in plenty of situations, or winston or whoever for that matter, but Zarya is a god damn beast for damage and the shield is powerful. Just remember the ally shield blocks more damage than the personal one, and has a shorter cooldown.

I enjoyed my 2 hours with the beta, but I don't think I'll be picking the full game up.

The only progression you have is through cosmetic items, and I'm not a huge fan of that.

D.Va is not great in the competetive scene unless it's stopwatch on payload and trying to milk a few more seconds. Doesnt tracer counter D.Va pretty hard? she can't really move while firing which makes her weak to flanking enemies.

I like using the c4 boost with junkrat on consoles. junkrat is a pretty good character

It's fun, the netcode is a LOT better than the stress test on PC.

On there I had bad rubberbanding and lag, but here, it's been smooth.

Fond of Mei and D.va, both are precious national treasures that must be protected.

I think it might be the other way round, at least for casual play. For the last few years console versions of most shooters had much better longevity there compared to PC.

Always depends on the game, publisher, audience, etc. CoD and similar shooters are usually console-first in focus and have the biggest audience there. OW is basically a mish-mash of PC genres (TF2, MOBAs, some Quake), supported by Blizzard, and most definitely will see its e-sports scene developing on PC (it already is). Thriving e-sports actually attracts casual crowds in the case of popular PC games. While it's possible the console versions will have a healthy population for a long time since Blizzard are committed to supporting them, it's pretty much a guarantee that the PC version is going to be the most popular in this case (both casually and competitively).

What progression are you looking for? There will be competitive play sometime after launch that will allow you to progress in ranks.

And now the launch won't even include a competitive ranked queue. Don't worry though, it's coming "soon after" launch, just like Diablo PvP and Heroes of the Storm seasons.

That's one of the main draws for me. I don't have to grind to unlock gameplay mechanics or weapons.

Gameplay on the PC felt great as usual last night. PS4 was a bit rough. Some games were great. Some games I was abandoning support or tank roles due to no one playing the objectives.

There will be ranked competitive later on, but that's it. Understandable if it's not your thing.

Personally, this was actually the biggest draw of the game for me. I'm dead tired of all the loadout, upgrade, weapon unlock bullshit in every online game. Playing this and Rocket League recently reminded me how too many multiplayer games overdo it with the breadcrumb rewards and forced pseudo complexity.

Preordered this game believing I could play it now early but then read up that I missed the deadline and now have to wait till it's open for everyone on Thursday :'(

resapwn timer needs to be a bit lower, specially with how big some maps are and how easy it is to die to a stray anything.

Also wish there was a faster way to get new teamamtes rather than waiting to the end, having to leave the game, and queue up again

Yeah, that is a good point. PC kinda scares me because I always think the people who are sticking around are really hardcore and would probably wipe the floor with me.

Game is fun and the characters are really awesome. The characters are what really sets it apart. I instantly clicked with D.Va the mech girl. Just a blast going on a suicide bombing run to blow up your mech taking out 2+ people, yet escaping and calling in a new one.

However - the core game modes of king of the hill and follow the cart around are not the most fun of modes - kinda boring. It makes the game overly simplistic and limited. I mean, is there going to be capture the flag style mode variants?

Also the map design and art design of the maps are also mediocre - with nothing standing out about any of them. I hate the art direction of the maps - very very bland.

While I agree with Swarna's post that OW might be different than CoD etc., because Blizzard will probably focus on the PC version, like you said, I can't shake the feeling that the PC version will mostly be a hardcoreland a month or two from the release will have few casual/midcore players.

It's a Blizzard game. there is 0 chance of that. Their massive casual audience is all on the pc.

D.Va seems OP, but she is so damn fun to use.

naw D.Va is nowhere near OP.

the closest thing to OP lately to me seems like if someone is REALLY good with Mcree....his stun + shoot is so strong. Literally just 2 shots people instantly.

but it does take skill to be able pull it off well, but once you have that "skill" its a bit to stronk.

This. With you 100% buddy. At some point the game becomes less about playing the actual game than it does building a "dope" fucking avatar.

I'm really hoping for a comeback of the streamlined shooters.

That's why they nerfed it into the ground with the delay.

That would help, but I like to have something to aim for.

I enjoyed looking through all the cosmetic items available for all the heroes, but I like to earn that alongside aiming for a main goal.

I dunno, the game is fun to play, but I have a hard time playing when I question myself thinking "What's the point?" It's fun, but I do like to have like an arbitrary goal of level 50 or something like that. And you get something that affects gameplay when you level up, instead of cosmetics.

I hope one of the new classes that is eventually added works similar to spy in TF2. Maybe a class that resets ultimate charges and easily takes out buildings. Not sure, I really like playing spy in TF2 though.
