Enter The Gungeon |OT| Praise the gun

The convict's past was pretty easy. ALMOST flawlessed it.... but I got greedy.

The Patriot is amazing.

The Shotgun full of love is still one of my favorite guns. I will always buy that when I see it.

Yep: huge damage, turns enemies friendly...what's not to love?

The Bloody Scarf took some getting used to but ended up being part of a successful Convict run! Super tense at the end having half a heart left during the second phase of the Dragun and trying to teleport into each empty space.

Patch on ps4 is a godsend. I was able to get to the Dragun on my first run after downloading it. I had only managed to get to him once in about 65 previous runs.

Did they patch the damn rat?

Did the trick where you scare him away twice and he still took an ammo box

Yup, the rat will get your item now.

That fucking sucks. This patch is officially the worst between this and the junk.
sarcasm, I'm sure they worked hard on the patch. but the rat thing is unfortunate

Some of the stuff needed for the platinum is incredibly time-consuming. On Steam, one achievement in particular has only been completed by 0.1% of players (completing all of Frifle's challenges, which are essentially bounties).

Good luck. You'd need to play about 10 hours a day to do it. Some of the challenges are quite difficult and others are time consuming an rely on RNG.

Got this game a few days ago and I'm having a blast, but I'm also having a problem with the little sidequest to get the elevator working properly.

Basically I'm here to ask what the best way to get keys is. I need 3 keys and 120 casings for the next step. Getting the casings is easy, I almost always have enough before fighting the second boss, but I think I can count on one hand how many times I've had a key drop after clearing a room. I'm using the hunter because a) crossbow rocks and it hurts less to not open chests, and b) maybe the dog will dig one up I guess (I think I've seen the dog dig for items less times than he's pointed out a mimic).

Any tips? I can't buy enough keys because then I don't have enough cash, but I don't trust the RNG to actually give me any (this clearly isn't BoI when it comes to post-room clear items).

First game on the new PS4 patch and made it to Chamber 6. I got the Bundle of Wands and The Membrane pretty early, so that helped. Apparently the shop owner will always sell a key if you're not holding one. So even if one drops in a room and you have zero, don't pick it up and go to the shop first. That way you have the option to buy a key if you want.

Hunter is your best bet for the aforementioned dog, but I wouldn't waste TOO much of your time on the shortcuts -- they each unlock an item/achievement, but you end up skipping floors and therefore valuable heart containers/guns/items (the lower levels give you a free gun to compensate, though). They're more useful for practicing against specific bosses/enemies.

I wasn't planning on using them too much, I just wanted to get the checklist done, but I get what you're saying. It just really feels like keys spawn super infrequently, but I guess the shops are supposed to make up for that.

Also do the colors of the chests matter? I figure those big red ones are better than the others, but is there a difference between the blue, green, and brown ones? I mean, with keys being a rare resource I'd like to know which chests to spend them on.

Hmm.

Having the best run.

Beat the
Jammed King

Just beat the 3rd level boss

game freezes on generation screen

gungeon I'm trying to love you

Yep, in order of quality they go brown, blue, green, red, and then black. There are rainbow chests (spawns a ton of items) and "glitch" chests (takes you to a special fight against two Beholsters and then rewards you with a ton of stuff), too, but those are super rare (35 hours and I've never seen either). I don't ever waste a key on a brown chest unless I'm absolutely swimming in them.

Got it. Thanks for the info. I'll just ignore brown chests from now on.

It looks like it freezes. It doesn't. Hold in there. I waited 3 mins once it finally generated.

I waited like 5 minutes.

I was like 'nah I'ma play some overwatch instead' @_@

edit-

Oh my god Beehive+Angry bullets is completely bonkers. Just did 4 pillars and oh my god the slowdown was immense from hundreds of bees

Someone posted a test about ammo drops on reddit. If you didn't know, the more ammo you spend the more that drops, the exception being the starter pistol. I didn't realize it was this drastic though;

DarkVexon on Reddit said:
Cleared 50 rooms three seperate games, making sure to use specific amounts of ammo.
No Ammo Used = 2 Ammo Drops 100 Ammo Used = 5 Ammo Drops 1000 Ammo Used = 10 Ammo Drops
That's pretty big, and these chances stayed throughout the whole game. IDK if it matters what gun was shot, however. I tested it with a Peashooter.

I guess more proof you really shouldn't be using the starting pistol after floor 1.

I finally got enough keys and casings for the 2nd part of the level 2 shortcut checklist. Passed two black chests to do it, but fuck it, I got it done and that's what matters.

Decided to go with the Marine instead of the Hunter because his basic gun isn't ass and the free armor is a nice bonus. The dog wasn't doing jack shit anyway.

When y'all talk about gun 1+ gun 2 combos are y'all talking about just using those two guns or throwing them in to that gun eater chest? Does that thing combine them or does it just give you a random gun?

I think most people are just talking about using those two guns -- though there IS an item that can combine the effects of two guns (Duct Tape, which has to be unlocked at the shop I believe). The gun muncher doesn't combine guns, it just gives you a random gun in exchange.

I hate myself. I'm absolutely trash

How do I get Megabuster and deamon head on the first chamber, not flawless a single boss, have easy late game bosses (cannon ball on 3rd floor, wall on 4th) and die on the 5th chamber before even getting to dragun?

I'm so mad at myself.

I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of dodging through boss attacks instead of walking through openings. Managed to beat Gatling Gull and the Beholster both without getting hit (which got me the 2nd Chamber shortcut and a jumpstart on the next one). I don't think I've ever gotten the 2nd Chamber Mastery with the Beholster before. The Gorgun sure, plenty of times with her, but never that big eyed bastard.

Also tried out using more ammo to see if I got more ammo drops (seeing as it was mentioned earlier) and yeah it definitely felt like that was the case. Still had to call in a supply drop once, but I didn't feel like I needed to fall back on my starting pistol.

The two times I've got duct tape I've completely screwed it up and ended up with something terrible. Haha

I thought it put together the two guns you have marked as your favorites. Nope.

Next time I see it I'm dropping all the weapons except the two I want to combine.

How do you use that Alien Engine weapon?

When I shoot it I go flying backwards and nothing seems to get damaged?

I'm still only able to get to floor 4 of the game, but I'm not playing it frequently enough yet to git gud.

It's super close range but high damage

After throwing the easiest run ever in the trash, i beat dragun twice in a row. First time i used the standard ak as my room clearer and got the judge gun in a chest on the last floor that helped me take dragun down. Super harrowing considering when i got him down to the second phase i only had half a heart.

Second time i got mega buster on the second chamber and this time it would not be squandered lol

Super annoyed.

First rin with bullet. All the way to floor 5 all bosses perfected, big bullets, homing bullets, wax wings, pig, everything good the best guns..get to room before dragun. Game decides to run at 3 frames per second for about 3 mins then crashes to xmb.

I was so close to that gold trophy. Fuck you game. You couldn't handle my awesome.

1st floor 2 brown chests.

2nd floor 2 brown chests.

This game has some really fun weapons but it seems they don't want you to ever bloody use them.

Oh well. I unlocked the pasts. But I'm not going to keep trying for the 6th floor with starts like this. It's just too slow and boring of a start =(

I really wish this game used even more Necrodancer's mechanics. Like paying to get items out of the pool and a place that you can just practice against the enemies you want.

I kind of agree. First floor needs to be shortened some. Reducing the length of the first floor would help keep me more interested in doing another run when I inevitably die on floor 4 or 5 with a bunch of garbage tier weapons.

Update: This has now been debunked.

What's really interesting is what one Redditor uncovered after looking through the log files:

asymptotical on Reddit said:
I've done a bunch of experiments while reading the logfile, and it seems that the drop rate is set to zero not when you only have infinite ammo guns, but instead when you are holding one when the check is made. I've already submitted a bug report on this.

It explains why ammo drops are so rare for many people: if you clear a room with a starting weapon, or even use it just to finish off the last few enemies, the ammo drop rate will be set to zero for that room even if you have other weapons that do need ammo. The only ammo drops you get then are from the random loot, and those really are rare.

One of the DodgeRoll devs responded that this will be fixed in the next patch. Until then, it seems like the best way to get ammo drops is to ensure that you clear a room with a non-starter weapon.

Fuck passive items so much. I can't believe they only give you one key at the start and don't guarantee that you get a new gun on the first floor. It's completely unbelievable. Most of them are shit too. I got through two floors and opened up at least 4 chests (one of them a big red one) and all I got was a standard shotgun, which ran out of ammo and I didn't see any more. Seriously, I never even got a new gun from the 1st and 2nd floor shops because they didn't have any. This is a game all about the crazy guns!

Bonus points for allowing the shop to be locked. I'm fine with that in Isaac when you get keys every other room, but keys are a fucking valuable commodity here. Half the time I use the shop just to buy more keys, so when the shop is locked then I'm just shit out of luck.

Basically what I'm saying is A) first floor should give you a new gun, no exceptions, and B) make keys and ammo spawn more frequently.

Yeah, I really don't think they need to lock the shops. Other uses of keys are also a little iffy. Like hiding a locked chest behind a locked cell door. In fact. The more I play the more I feel like brown chests should never be locked. If the meta is going to shift to the point where everyone shoots brown chests anyway, then maybe none of them should be locked.

I don't think we need to be swimming in keys to the point where we can unlock everything (sometimes you'll have to leave a green chest behind because you only had one key and using on the red chest was wiser), but I do think there's too many things in the game that make me think, "Obviously I'm not going to do that, game. Why even have it there?"

This patch has borked the game for me. More times than not I freeze at the third or fourth floor loading screen. Not the old 'wait five minutes for it to unfreeze itself' just endless nothing. With the general ps4 patching schedules god knows when it'll be playable again.

And as Archon noted, getting guns after bosses seems screwed as well.

Finally reached and defeated dragun for the first time. I combined the raiden coil with some kind of helix pistol using duct tape which burned through ammo, but absolutely tore up bosses.

Felt so friggin good.

Finally killed a past. Convict. Was pretty scary because
I finished the dragun with pretty low health, though I did have really good guns. But I was glad to find out that my health and everything reset because we went to the past. And it was nice only having to fight one simple boss and not go through an entire floor. I was also really happy to see a cutscene with character development and not just a random floor

Game keeps on giving.

Wait can you use the bloody scarf to get behind wallmonger

cause welp gg I thought about the bloody scarfs other ability(Able to choose where to teleport in a room)

I love this game for its style and production values, they really put a lot of love into it, but fuck it's hard. Sometimes the procedural generation can deliver you a bludger of a start as well.

I usually much rather get a lot of passive items than a lot of guns. Mainly the bullet buffs, they all feel so good (aside from Heavy Bullet).

Yep, 100% agreed, locked shops are really dumb.

Yesterday I had 2 keys and quite a lot of money and I got a locked shop. I thought "mmm, yeah, I totally should try to buy something good". Spent a key and the shop was selling 2 half hearts, one key and one... PEA SHOOTER.

I'm gonna start using http://bulletk.in/ (from reddit).

Oh wow, that's a GOOD website! Thanks a lot!
Do you know if the quality reflects the color of the chest the item drops from?

===================================

Bosses that still give me way too much trouble after 40 hours:

Gatling Gull: depending on the room he can be the easiest floor 1 boss or the hardest. The completely opened rooms with nowhere to run usually guarantee me getting hit at least twice.

Ammoconda: this one not so much but I still find it too annoying that it spawns turrets that are basically invincible if you only have your starter gun. I feel like that's a design error and it absolutely should be nerfed.

High Priest: whenever I get him I just consider myself beaten, even if I'm able to defeat him I'm basically too weak to get anywhere on floor 5. I don't understand what on Earth he is supposed to be. He is so so so random that if I'm not really OP AND have 5/6 blanks, it's game over.

Overall I still feel like all the bosses are too spongy and should get nerfed on at least 10% of their HP.

========

Edit: OMG, finally after 40h I've beaten Dragun. I'm like, on tears, shaking, jumping around lol. This was truly one of the hardest games I've ever beaten.

Intersting, thanks for posting. I often use my starter pistol to finish off a room but definitely won't be doing that any more, at least until it's patched. Bravo to that guy for finding this and pointing it out to the devs.

I don't really agree that Gatling Gull and High Priest need needs but Ammoconda definitely does. Feels much much harder than of the other two floor two bosses.

Does this game completely wreck Nuclear Throne or will I still be able to enjoy that one after playing this?

Nuclear Throne still has value over this in some areas. There's a lot of key differences. One big semi-destructible area vs seperated random rooms, the MUCH greater differences between characters in Nuclear Throne, melee weapons existing.

I'd imagine you'd still enjoy playing Throne.
