So the sense I've gotten from impressions and reviews is gameplay is better story is halfway between uc and tlou and set pieces too are in between ?

Edit the only thing I have a hard time taking in is uc1 is scored higher than uc4 ... other sites like say giantbomb or Jim sterling I can get they've always not been sensational ign is surprising to me ... not saying it's wrong just surprising

Expectations

Uncharted 1 was a big step up graphically from the likes of Tomb Raider on the PS2, this time around ND had already done amazing work with U2/3 TLOU on the PS3 and the remasters also looked great. I guess U4 is a lot better, but maybe not as much of an impact as previous generational leap?

OH YES. I didn't get to review Uncharted 4, but I did at least score my copy five days early thanks to my trusty local video game store! They even stayed open 15 minutes past closing time because I was in a screening of Captain America: Civil War when they called and the movie ended too late for me to get there before closing. They're the best. <3

I CAN'T BELIEVE UNCHARTED 4 IS FINALLY HERE AND I'M ABOUT TO PLAY IT. One of my top three most-anticipated games of 2016 to be sure, alongside Final Fantasy XV and Rhythm Heaven Megamix. See ya'll on the other side. :)

So salty right now.

My local dudes told me they'd have it today and UPS didn't show up with their shipment.

Those brown uniformed cretins!

Uncharted 4 has better graphics, story, characters, and gameplay

Tomb raider just has a great rpg element in upgrading weapons
While I'm sure UC4 is amazing judging by the reviews I think you're slightly harsh on TR here, at least if you're talking about Rise of the Tomb Raider. The crafting and weapon upgrades was great of course but it was the combination of that and the cleverly designed sand box open world levels with almost Metroid-like gameplay that made RotTR so great imo. Makes me sad that the exclusivity deal stirred up so much negativity, the game was among the best of the gen at the time. Sounds awesome that UC4 is even better though.

I'm Avoiding the reviews, any word on how long it is?

Thanks ... They're complaining it's too long. My God, what the hell is happening here?

if it is short, will complain because it is short, if long because long.
If linear, needs to be openworld, if it is more open, it is boring to explore. If no shooting, pacing issues, if too much shooting, he is a serial killer.
really people just can't enjoy games these days.

Sorry for the derail but RotTR was terrible compared to the reboot. The upgrades were mostly combat focused and if you wanted every weapon upgrade in the game you had to needlessly grind specific areas for items. The metroidvania elements were pale in comparison because of the large open areas and the story was laughable compared to the reboot. With that said Game give me Uncharted 4 now!

Well I mean... Games can be too long. 18 hours sounds a bit too long to my taste, but we'll see.

Really? Too long can't be a real complaint. Too short can be (like The Order 1886 or Quantum Break without TV stuff) or too empty and too repetitive can.

Have you never played a game that you felt like was too long?

I expected nothing less really. Naughty Dog has been firing on all cylinders for so long I cannot imagine them ever making a game that isn't amazing now.

A game can absolutely overstay its welcome. The opinion that a game can be too long is definitely a valid one.

Having not played Uncharted 4 myself, I can't say whether or not I agree with them in this particular instance. I will say that I did feel Uncharted 3 dragged on at points, so I wouldn't be completely shocked if this game did the same. Then again, I found TLoU to be perfectly paced.

Long is just one part of their criticism.

Brian and Marty basically felt that the core mechanics of the game wasn't diverse enough to justify its length.

Eg. Doing the same kind of puzzle the Xth time over 18 hours loses its fun and feels more tedious at that stage.

To be fair, Giant Bomb has the same complain saying that "it run a few chapters too long".

I deliberately drag games out so I can experience them for as long as possible. My first playthrough of TLOU took me 23 hours and I loved every second. Their comments about what they think this will score has me worried. They say it's likely to score lower than 2 or 3, but it's the look to camera at that point that makes me think the comment is a precursor to a lower score from them. The guy in the middle (can't remember his name) looked decidedly sheepish when he said it.

Reviewers have to play a lot of games in a given time in order to get their reviews out. I think that's why some of them say things like this. We, the PAYING public, like to get as much for our money as possible. I know I do.

That impression was recorded BEFORE embargo.

What they're saying is that internally in IGN, they already know what their score is (8.8), but they're curious how other outlets will score it because among 4 IGN staff, they don't have the same opinion of UC4 as the broad majority, so they're assuming maybe other outlets are also sharing the same opinion as them.

I thought the 8.8/10 was just a placeholder score? It's still a great score of course.

Don't worry, Sony will milk it to death. Only naive to believe this is the last Uncharted

For a lot of people having more UC is not a problem .
But this should be the end of nathan drake story IMO.
A new UC with a new cast would be interesting but ND won't be making so that is another problem .

Great reviews, really looking forward to what looks like an amazing game.

I better finish off Uncharted 3 this weekend. I just started it the other day and I'm enjoying it so far(only up to Chapter 4).

Yes this does seem to kinda play a role.

Exactly. You pay for it. The only 'complain' about being too long would be if you want to see how the plot ends, or if extremely repetitive (but all games have repetitive gameplay, i mean even the most fun ones you end doing the same over and over). Maybe people should play the games in shorter sessions to avoid that kind of 'fatigue'.

And reviewers are just ... well I cannot trust them anymore. Some scores and reviews seem to search for clicks, or fanboyish arguments. And giving more importance to nitpicking than the whole picture. They look just regular players, not someone that acts professionally.
