X-Men Apocalypse Review Thread

Wait, people didn't see this coming? The trailers didn't look too good. Also, the whole story focusing on Mystique, yet again, lol jesus christ.

This was honestly one of my bigger gripes from the trailers. DOFP was probably as good as this franchise was going to get after X2.

But there's no way I can believe this will be worse than X3.

This guy also says X2 is his favorite comic book movie of all time

Welp....that's that. I'm pretty certain I won't like this movie much. :(

Not looking forward to all the marvel begging coming up tho or people using these poor reviews to retroactively shit on singers last 3 movies
Most of these negative reviews mention how great DOFP and X2 are at least!

But yeah this is sounding bad. Fox must be happy as hell now they got Deadpool out this year to soften the blow.

I can't for the life of me figure out how you'd bungle a movie with Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and J Law.

O wait yeah, not showing Oscar Isaac's actual face. That'd do the trick.

I like how the reason for liking these films for some people rests entirely on their costumes

not writing, directing, acting, score - but purely, the costumes.

lol

But that's wrong

It really isn't. DoFP is good moments with lackluster overall execution. The film peaks at the Quicksilver scene and never hits that level again, and it (and the new one, it seems) suffers from the same thing all Singer X-Men movies suffer from: The refusal and/or inability to show the X-Men work as a team in large battle sequences. The battle against the future sentinels is definitely a step forward in that regard, but you're still left with the fact that we don't know any of the characters in that fight very well.

Coming off of Civil War it's no wonder standard issue Singer action scenes feel underwhelming to several critics. Singer still uses the old "character does thing, cut to another character doing thing, repeat" technique that superhero movies used back in the pre-MCU days, and has yet to break out of it. I mean even BvS, lackluster as it was as a film, shows all three heroes tackling the big bad as a group and with kinetic direction. That's just not something I associate with X-Men films, and there's no reason that should be.

Also the constant obsession with trying to make Mystique happen. Indiana, let it go.

What troubles me the most about these reviews is actually the repeated mention that the action scenes aren't very good. DOFP had probably the best usage of superpowers in a movie before Civil War(not just the Quicksilver scene, but also Blink's portal usage and the fighting against the Nimrods in general), and to see them fail to live up to that level from the last film really bums me out.

Vaughn wasn't "not allowed" to make a sequel to First Class (why would he? The movie was a hit and he has a good relationship with Fox), he voluntarily dropped out to pursue Star Wars and then, later, Kingsman.

Looks like this might be Cap's year to shine, first time he'll beat an X-Men movie critically and commercially? Or am I remembering wrong?

edit: of course, I'm assuming middling reviews will translate equally to the money made, but Cap seems like a high bar to pass this year

These reviews...

I hope this will lead to them getting rid of Jennifer Lawrence entirely or just having her do a cameo in the next movie.
I highly doubt this series is over but I'm really tired of her and it looks like she's all over this one.

she was only contracted for 3 movies so, unless she loves doing these movies, kiss her goodbye

I enjoyed the Last Stand and that film was divisive, so we'll see, but the trailers weren't that good though. Hoping for the best.

While the trailers for this looked awful, I'd have to say that critics tend to be a tad hyperbolic with superhero movie reviews lately. Having seen both BvS and Civil War, I didn't feel like Civil War was the ultimate triumph of the genre or that BvS murdered puppies. Might go see this, but my expectations have now dropped like Sokovia.

JLaw has been putting in D level work into this.

JLaw is a professional. She tried her damn hardest in the last couple of Hunger Games movies even tho she's moved way past that franchise. And Lord knows Joy was pile of crap she had to act her way out of.

If you can't get her to even do a passable impression of Katniss you've really messed up.

That's a real shame. Was hoping for a third time Fox's terrible marketing was hiding a much better movie, but it looks like that wasn't the case.

"@tvoti: Storywise, X-Men Apocalypse is a total mess. But nobody directs superpowers as well as Bryan Singer. It’s fun to look at. *shruggie guy*"

Good. Hopefully it's the last straw for Singer's cheap looking Agents of Shield/Power Rangers aesthetics and nonsensical timeline. And why does the main writer for Fant4stic gets to write this movie?

Hopefully going forward Fox learns from Deadpool that sticking to the source material actually works.
