[SPOILER THREAD] X-Men: Apocalypse

Yeah, that synopsis is way outdated. The version of Magneto losing his family is way better than what's in that early version.

Jubilee doesn't die. She doesn't really do anything.

Singer said she was the fan favorite character and hyping the fuck out of her appearence

I'm honestly kinda surprised that, being X-Men are at Fox, nobody's looked into just fucking around and introducing Aliens into the films.

I mean, why stick with the Brood when the source is at the same studio.

The Xenomorphs pushed the heroes that are not zeros, and had power to the max to the brink.

X-men might not have it in them

"Bryan Singer, still making the best superhero film of 2000".

Ugh. So he's not even wearing the classic costume? I got excited for nothing.

Is X-23 in the movie like rumors suggest?

Those rumors are for Old Man Logan or whatever Wolverine 3 will be, not this movie.

Ugh. So he's not even wearing the classic costume? I got excited for nothing.

Nah, but I was absolutely not expecting him to come out his cage all wired-up and helmeted. Not at all. Shocked the shit out of me. They've done Weapon-X how many times now and never went there before?

He fucks Alkali Lake up

Wolverine kills, but is there blood?

Yeah. I mean, not a ton, because it's still PG-13, but I don't know if he even has a line of dialog. Just grunts, shouts, growls, and death.

Bobby do you think fassbender is wasted here?

Nah. He's not as good as First Class or Days, though. But I don't think he's fully wasted.

Is Patrick Stewart in this in some way shape or form?

Is there any mention of Mystique being Nightcrawler's mum?

No, and no. She's not Nightcrawler's mom in this. They don't outright disqualify it, but there seems to be no way to reconcile their ages, or the fact she seems to have zero recognition of Nightcrawler before she meets him for the first time in this movie.

A friend just watched a journalist only watching of the movie and confirmed to me that the post-credit scene sets up X-23

Like that's stopped the X-Men series before.

How's the Wolverine bit stack up to his action in the other flicks?

Anything that challenges the X2 Manson attack/Deathstrike/The Wolverine Shingen fight?

Just got back! I enjoyed it but I can understand if anyone think it's underwhelming.

Random tidbits.

- Scott & Alex is good. Scott is at his cockiest phase and he actually didn't do that much. Alex is great BUT--
- They killed Alex Summers.
- Jean Grey saved the day by being Phoenix. Yes, again.
- Wolverine's cameo is cool, but the movie took a detour just to have him and to set up more movies. He had a moment with Jean, but considering how young Jean look and how old Jackman is it's kind of creepy that they could be love interest later. His fights is also *very* brutal compared to the rest of the movie.
- I still like McAvoy as Xavier.
- They know Quicksilver was fan favorite in DoFP and they REAALLLY overdid him here. Like he saved the entire X-mansion resident on a single explosion. And Magneto really is his faher.
- Everything, everything about Apocalypse and his horsemen were hilarious. In the ironic sense. He recruited 4 random mutants because that's what the comics said. 4 random, people-you-just-met-on-the-street kind. The explanation is that he transfers from body to body via a ritual. The first scene showed he need help in the ritual, but in the final battle he actually performed the ritual himself, the horsemen there just to guard him. None of them had a good reason to join Apocalypse except...
- ...Magneto, who can't catch a break. Poor guy had his happiness taken away so he can become a villain in this movie. During the final battle, Apocalypse practically said "go fuck shit up" and he does that.
- I can't like Lawrence/Mystique as a leader here. Mystique is not a good leader. I feel like J.Law is a crutch here, like she *is* Mystique but you can't sideline a star like J.Law
- As with DoFP, the movie ends with a triumph. They got uniforms and it's very close to how I remember X-Men. Mystique got her white stripe on her shirt. Nightcrawler got the V-shaped red over black. Cyclops got the cross "X" on his upper left chest. Even Jean Grey was very close.

Just saw it. I really enjoyed it even though there are plenty of flaws. If like me you happen to be an old-school X-Men reader who also loves the Singer version despite the many "adjustments", you will probably have a good time.

Here are my thoughts, keep in mind that I am not a native english speaker so my apologies if my ramblings are difficult to read:

The highlight was definitely the Quicksilver scene, which is one of my favorite superhero action scenes. Maybe even better than the airport scene in Civil War. CW is the better film though and I say this as someone who generally prefers the Singer films to the MCU. But the cinematography and soundtrack are definitely better here and it's absolutely exhilarating and hilarious at the same time and it really comes out of nowhere.

Cyclops is also very good in the film and has a nice arc, same with Nightcrawler. Storm doesn't have much to do but I like the actress, I loved her look and accent and I hope she will still have her badass mohawk in the next one. There is a certain elegance in the way Singer puts together his films and that is definitely still the case here, it is a very beautiful movie at times and the shots and cuts are very well orchestrated.

Unfortunately there are also a lot of issues with the film. They didn't ruin the experience for me but I understand the reviews. I think after 3 films Singer ran out of story ideas and decided to please the fans and give them what he thinks they want which is often a mistake. To do that, he had to go outside of his comfort zone as a filmmaker and it doesn't always work. Here are my biggest issues with the film :

- Apocalypse. He doesn't look good and just isn't an interesting villain. I actually wanted him to give an evil monologue to clearly explain his plans even though that is a cliché. His motivations for wanting to destroy the world are pretty murky. A small monologue about the survival of the fittest would have helped.
- The horsemen are mostly wasted. Psylocke fans, you will not be pleased.
- The characters motivations in the third act make no sense. I won't go into details but considering the stakes and the millions of lives lost (probably, none of it is really shown), there should be no redemption possible for anyone who associated with Apocalypse even though some of them turn against him at the last second.
- Jean Grey has a great story arc in the movie but my god Sophie Turner is TERRIBLE. I agree that Jennifer Lawrence isn't great as Mystique either but she is still tolerable. I have nothing against Turner and I like her on GoT but a lot of the film rests on her shoulders and she is the weakest actor in the film by far. Her line delivery is absolutely awful.

The X-men movies that I love:
1) X2
2) Days of Future Past
3) First Class

That I like:
4) X-Men
5) Apocalypse
6) The Wolverine (to be honest, 5&6 are pretty much a tie for me I think, I will need a second viewing)

Feel indifferent about:
7) Last Stand

Absolutely hate:
8) Wolverine Origins

Shame to hear they wasted Apocalypse and the horsemen.
Maybe I missed it in the thread but what happens to Apocalypse in the end?

He gets killed. He's basically vaporized and they don't really hint at any possibility of him having survived. Of course, they could find a way to bring him back in a future movie anyway but it looks like he's going to be a one movie villain.

Edit:
I forgot to mention the post-credits scene in my previous post, I don't know if it has already been detailed in this thread but here you go:
A man in a black suit shows up at the Weapon X facility, he gets access to the Wolverine room and takes a sample of some blue fluid (not sure what that was, didn't look like adamantium) and puts it in a suitcase next to other fluid samples of different colors. He closes the suitcase and we get a good look at what is written next to the handle : Essex Industries. At least I think that's what was written, maybe it was just Essex? Anyway, Mister Sinister is next...

Magneto pins him in place and Jean obliterates him.

Bobby, would you say the RT score is to low?

He'll probably say something like "who cares" in regards to RT score

Yeah, the RT score isn't really that concerning. Most of the reviews that make up the score that I have looked at seem fair enough. I liked it, but that doesn't mean a lot of the complaints don't have merit. They absolutely do.

Here is how I rate the X-Men franchise

X2
DoFP
The Wolverine
First Class
Wolverine: Origins
The Last Stand
X-Men

Where would Apocalypse fit on my list?

Mmmh, probably between First Class and Origins. Your list is pretty similar to mine but do you really prefer Origins to the first X-Men film? How dare you.

Phoenix? How is it shown?

Jean gets a push from Xavier to really boost her powers. She then helps everyone out of a hairy situation with Apocalypse. She's portrayed as a glorious and fiery (classical) phoenix bird.

I got the sense he'd died? That's what I thought.

Wow, didin't notice you replied to me.

Angel died? That can't be right, can it? I'm really struggling to remember what was his last scene. Was that bloodied up scene before or after when he broke out from the rubble (the iron bars of that house's skeleton). That bloodied face is the last thing I remember.
