[SPOILER THREAD] X-Men: Apocalypse

He gets killed. He's basically vaporized and they don't really hint at any possibility of him having survived. Of course, they could find a way to bring him back in a future movie anyway but it looks like he's going to be a one movie villain.

I thought his connection with Xavier might be a modified origin story of Onslaught.

It would fit the 90s era setting

Angel died? That can't be right, can it? I'm really struggling to remember what was his last scene. Was that bloodied up scene before or after when he broke out from the rubble (the iron bars of that house's skeleton). That bloodied face is the last thing I remember.

Yes thats the last time we see him.

Just saw it, pretty underwhelming movie for me. I can't even say what exactly irks me, somehow the whole thing just never takes off and it just feels like I've seen everything of the movie before in a different coat already.

Hah! this is exactly the same problem I had. I think he died because he basically fell off that plane into a bombed out house, right? Or he fell, and then the house fell on him? Shit is real fuzzy, but all I remember is a shot of him unconscious (or dead) and bloodied up on the ground amidst a whole ton of rubble.

They never went back to him after that, so I think that was his death scene?

I don't think Havok's dead, specifically because they never showed his body, even though they showed people looking for it for a little bit. But Angel's last shot is him bloodied and embedded in rubble.

So death count is two maybes and a definite. Angel/Havok = Maybe, Apocalypse = definite.

Singer kills a bunch of regular ass humans, though. Magneto and Apocalypse are constantly killing people. I even noticed they made sure to computer animate tiny little bodies running and getting sucked into the destruction whenever they cut to it. If there was citywide destruction, there were little digital people getting swirled up into it.

Yeah, I had the same thought, all the pieces are in place for that to happen but I doubt it will. If they want to bring him back they could use his connection to Xavier and Jean / the Phoenix. But considering the reception so far, I doubt they will resurrect Apocalypse or try to make Onslaught happen. But if Singer does direct the next one, I think Mister Sinister, despite his silly name, is a villain that is better suited to his strengths as a director than "destroy the world" type villains like Apocalypse and Onslaught.

And regarding Archangel, I think the ending implies he died. There is a shot of his body covered in blood after Apocalypse is defeated. Of course, they can retcon him a third time if they want, why not?

Edit:

That was one of the things that bugged me about the ending. Storm and Magneto weren't mind contolled and they are partly responsible for thousands (if not millions) of deaths and yet Xavier still talks to Erik as a friend. Of course, that wasn't his first time killing humans but I have a hard time accepting the fact that the Apocalypse horsemen could ever be redeemed...

What was Psylocke's characterization like

There was none. She has maybe two lines. She works for Caliban (an information broker, he's pretty cool). She's vaguely intrigued when Apocalypse shows up looking for powerful mutants and she follows him. She's basically a villain and the ending doesn't really imply that she could change sides but who knows.

The mutant Caliban?

Yes, I think that's supposed to be him but he's very different from the comic book version as is often the case with Singer but I thought he looked interesting. I might be misremembering but I think they meet him in an underground area, maybe it's a small hint towards the Morlocks.

This must be the dark portrayal of Xavier where his beliefs about humans being the same as mutants stems from a cracked sense of moral superiority that shatters when tested.

Yeah, that's it.

Man the Phoenix Force scene was awesome, or the end with the more classic looking costumes.

Credit Scene was a hint to Mr. Sinister if I understood it correctly?

And Weapon X looked onpoint

Yeah, that's it.

I think this is just a hint that the Fox cinematic universe and the DCCU are one and the same. Superman kisses Lois on the crater that is Metropolis while Xavier and Magneto have a friendly talk while still covered in the human dust of the people vaporized by Apocalypse and his horsemen.

Yep.

I know.

Why did you think that was some sort of criticism as opposed to a basic statement of fact?

I don't remember them ever showing a body.

For story purposes he's dead. Whether they will bring him back for future movies somehow is up to them because conveniently they don't show the body

Mmmh, probably between First Class and Origins. Your list is pretty similar to mine but do you really prefer Origins to the first X-Men film? How dare you.

Lol I know. I just think people hate that movie because of what they did to all the characters. It's ok for Singer to butcher all the characters, but somebody else does it, it's a bad movie.

Liev and Hugh's interactions make it really enjoyable for me. Also I never gave a shit about Deadpool so I didn't care what they did to him.

The action scenes in it were far better than X-men. All the characters were likeable, unlike X-Men. The plot was better imo.

Stryker's motives made more sense than Magneto's water making machine.

Like his whole motive is to convert everyone to a mutant, but then he finds out it just kills everybody, and he's like fuck it gonna use it anyways. Rogue, Cyclops, Storm were annoying as hell. Only reason Rogue is there is to be used as a stupid plot device.

Couldn't stand Halle's and Marsden's acting. Everyone's complaining that JLaw is just there to collect paychecks, yah so were these guys.

Wolverine is shown in the beginning to be some badass dude, (which was the best part of the whole movie), then he gets turned into a giant wuss who just gets owned all the time. (all Singer movies he's a wuss. The guy never even read a wolverine comic yet he claims he's his fave, yah sure there buddy).

The only reason the movie is watchable, is because of Patrick, Ian, Rebecca, and Hugh. Yet we only get one scene at the beginning when Prof X and Magneto are face to face.

Cycloos, the leader of the team is a goddamn push over in these movies, made sense to just kill him off in Last Stand (best thing they did).

I could go on but I digress, not here to pick apart a 16 year old movie.

Finished watching the show and man, wolverine wrecking as weapon X is brutal. It is probably the most aggressive wolverine i ever see. It gives zero fcuk on murdering here.

It's also tonally different from the rest of the movie. In a movie where deaths are creative, he straight up slashed people, blood splatters on the wall and everything. Dude's really pissed.

That is good to hear they are finally doing justice to the weapon X storyline.

i saw this :>

it was fun i really liked it. the humour and the dialog were really funny and i liked all the characters, they captured most of them very well. i wasn't sold on jean grey and angel, but the rest of them was on point <3

charles with moira was too damn adorable *____*

and the power porn deliverededededededededdddddd

Ouch, the opening day numbers in France are pretty tepid apparently. It's well below Days of Future Past and below First Class as well and that one didn't do great worldwide. France is a small market of course but this is not a great start...

Just got back from watching the movie.

Was Nina the Scarlet Witch?

I asked my friend that before she turned the animals on the cops and died. Then I thought "Nope, she's probably not Scarlet Witch."

Quicksilver still has his sister from DOFP that they could use later though, even though she doesn't appear in this.

I enjoyed it. The first half is pretty good. I do agree that the last half is basically destruction porn and buckets of CG, and it's a bit much. Fuck I enjoyed it though. Apocalypse is a bit of a flat villain, but it's Apoc, so whatever.

The bit where Magneto yells IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT after his family is killed is hilarious.

Wolverine cutting loose was great and I'm looking forward to Wolverine 3.

JLaw was sleepwalking.

i dont think so... scarlet witch is supposed to be quicksilver's twin sister

and her powers seem to be more about controlling animals than spells...

Seeing Wolverine in his Weapon X costume made my inner X-Men fanboy scream lol.

I thought it was great.

New 4 horsemen were a let down. Should have used the ones in the intro.

Apocalypse was too OP at the beginning but seems to be holding back against the mutants.

Pheonix reveal was great. Better than X3

Quicksilver still the best X-Men.

Now the wait for
Mr. Sinister
begins..

Psylocke was a let down for me.

Her psychic knife was too long & weird looking!

I think she had other problems than that. Like being a real character. :/

I was so waiting to see the Horsemen wreak havoc, but they were the most disappointing thing in the movie. Luckily I found my inner fanboy and could enjoy the rest of the movie.

Quicksilver is just awesome. He needs his own movie.

I can't believe I would ever say this about this character but you're right, he would be great in his own film, Evan Peters is hilarious as Quicksilver. And even though I can already foresee a big backlash against Bryan Singer when the movie will be out everywhere ("Apocalypse sucks, give it back to Marvel, reboot the whole thing!"), he deserves a lot of credit for those scenes. Not many directors could have upped the ante with Quicksilver after DoFP but he did so brilliantly, it was so much fun. I hope the director for The Flash can pull off scenes at least half as brilliant as what we got in Apocalypse.

Yeah, he's kinda like Deadpool. Totally unique.

Jubilee being underused is gutting but expected. Does she use her powers in it? And if so, are they powerful?

Nope, not even once :(
But I wouldnt be surprised if we eventually get a Jubilee Cut of X-Men Apocalypse (similar to what they did with Rogue and DoFP) because the mall scene that had been teased so much has been reduced to a few seconds.

Wait really? She doesn't even use them? Oh fuck that. I was actually buying into the hype the crew and cast were giving her.

That build up was either them being dicks or it confirms that yeah, she got some scenes cut out because there's no way they didn't film anything to show her abilities.

Well, it's possible that I missed her popping some fireworks in the background in one of the school scenes but yeah, they really don't do anything with her in this cut of the movie. It's a shame because if the next one does takes place in the 90s, it's going to be hard to justify her still being around and looking the same and we're probably never going to see her team up with Wolverine. Oh well, at least they're finally doing right by Cyclops in this film, it took them long enough!

Just got back from seeing it

Thought it was amazing.

Young Cyclops was done properly, very excited to see him in future films and Quicksilver was brilliant again

Hope the after credits scene hints at what I'm thinking it is - X23?
Edit: ooo sinister? Even better

How long does it take for Phoenix to cancel/end the Apocalypse? Is it like a 30 second money shot of "I can't control it!"and she's done, or is it an actual extended thing?

It's a long fight with the key characters. Then Xavier is like "go on Jean, uncontrol yourself", Jean goes "fuck it" and goes full boom phoenix bird. Fight is quite long but Phoenix part is not that long.
