Overwatch marks a new low in Unlocking and Microtransaction systems that I'm aware of

saying this as a fighting game player...

you don't wanna know how low it really goes.

True, locked skins and voice samples exist in most full priced fighting games, sometimes attached to real grinds. These things aren't new lows in anything, or even new in general.

yes, WoW has a pity timer as well. Literally every RNGesus game Blizz has has a pity timer on it. I have seen people here talk about droughts, but without blizz speaking up I'm not sure what there timer is.

belief is the HS pity timer is 40 packs (as in no leg in 39 packs, the 40th will contain one)

WoW I believe was pretty low.. like 5-6 LFG raids (from the auto drop)

lol... not even close to optimistic. unless you are talking about for a SPECIFIC legendary skin.

If you would read the conversation you hopped in on I specified legendary skin to begin with. Pallet swaps aren't even new skins.

yet I'm fine with the included content for the price I paid. Certainly you see that that value ratio is subjective... right?

You're including that you actually get legendary skins from drops, right? It could very well be one more box before you get the legendary skin you want.

This thread is the epitome of trying to create an issue where one doesn't exist.

Overwatch fails any Objective measure of content. Yes I do realize fun can't be measured but I can measure a total lack of mode variety, map variety, skin variety, no single player, pretty much any metric of variety besides class variety overwatch fails. So while you can claim subjective fun the game itself is objectively bare bones to the fullest.

it's pretty much the same system that Mass Effect 3 used for its multiplayer unlocks. This "new low" is old hat... and it affords us free content down the road. I don't see a problem.
shut the fuck up with your "free content"!!! who cares about free characters and modes when I have to pay for voice lines!!?!?!?

lol... not even close to optimistic. unless you are talking about for a SPECIFIC legendary skin.

My playtime is over eight hours and I dont have a single legendary skin, never mind a specific one. I think I've got around three of the cheaper re-colour skins. The vast majority of my loot boxes have been three grey and one white.

shut the fuck up with your "free content"!!! who cares about free characters and modes when I have to pay for voice lines!!?!?!?

Yes this free content. Pray tell what is the schedule for new modes and maps and all these bountiful free content I keep hearing about? Or should I just wait a year for my $60 game to actually be worth the $60 I paid in measure able content?

Hahahahahah what? Overwatch has basically the perfect microtransaction/progression system, in that it's there if you give a fuck but otherwise it's total fluff. Some people really do have a visceral negative reaction to Blizzard, don't they? Maybe it's because they basically fucked around and made the best FPS ever by accident, shaming every other entry in the genre.

Also fighting games have used unlocking cosmetic content as a carrot for literally decades, this is no different. Hell, all the Mortal Kombat games that I can remember required you to play for a while before you could even use all the characters.

I bought Overwatch and I only care about playing the game. I realize that's not everyone, but I really appreciate the move not to lock maps and characters behind a paywall or season pass. I don't give a shit about skins, speech, sprays or whatever. I would venture to say there are a lot of people like me.

For those that are into those things, you don't have to spend money either. You can play the game and get loot boxes. If the game required you to buy those items for a competitive advantage, I would be in agreement.

I think most agree this is a non issue, but you don't have to spend a dime past the initial buy in to get a full play experience. I definitely wouldn't call it "a new low." That's hyperbole at best, if not outright absurdity.

If only fully priced games didn't nickel and dime you for the smallest shit.

Our acceptance of this kind of thing is really sad.

Agreed.

I don't care what the content is - if I've paid full price for a game, I don't want to be constantly reminded there's locked content on the disc which I can buy for an extra fee.

If you want to use F2P mechanics, make a F2P game. I don't play F2P games for that reason. If I've given you the full price tag, give me all the fucking content.

Sadly it's been accepted so much it will never change now. Enjoy cards, crates and all that bollocks in games you've paid £40 for.

They are legendary for a reason, or then what would be the point if everyone was rocking them on day 1.

And who cares anyway, it's an FPS, it's not like you are going to see it anyway.

Yes this free content. Pray tell what is the schedule for new modes and maps and all these bountiful free content I keep hearing about? Or should I just wait a year for my $60 game to actually be worth the $60 I paid in measure able content?

O wait your serious.

Content does not equal value.

You dont seem the brightest sort.

Seeing as that point has been raised multiple times AND answered itt.

Get outta here with your fanboy hate.

There are no grey quality (junk) items. It's white (common), blue (rare), purple (epic) and gold (legendary). Also pretty sure that just like with hs packs, every box will contain at least 1 rare item or better.

They are legendary for a reason, or then what would be the point if everyone was rocking them on day 1.

And who cares anyway, it's an FPS, it's not like you are going to see it anyway.

The legendary costumes tend to be the only ones worth rocking at all. It's just padding on a sparce game content wise. Since when are pallet swaps considered new skins? Should be press A for green or X for white not actually have to pay in game currency for this "new skin".

O wait your serious.

Content does not equal value.

You dont seem the brightest sort.

Content does not equal value 1:1 but anyone that can measure objectively between like games can see this game falls well short of standard. Like I've said before show me any game that wasn't criticized for a lack of content that has less or even the same as overwatch. I'm having trouble thinking of anything besides Titanfall that had the same tiny amount of content at launch at all. Just one multi shooter game from a tiny fledgling studio.

Agreed.

You don't have to buy any of it. It's all available if you just play the game. There is only one button in one menu that even lets you know there's a way to buy these boxes with real money.

Agreed.

This is as far away from F2P as possible. That comparison makes no sense.

Ah I thought the white was grey, doesnt change my point, the majority of my pulls have been three white and one blue

They are legendary for a reason, or then what would be the point if everyone was rocking them on day 1.

And who cares anyway, it's an FPS, it's not like you are going to see it anyway.

Unless you use an emote, or get POTG, or look at your highlights, or you get killed, or it affects your hands/weapon, etc. You probably wont see it for the majority of a match but you certainly do see it.

The legendary costumes tend to be the only ones worth rocking at all. It's just padding on a sparce game content wise. Since when are pallet swaps considered new skins? Should be press A for green or X for white not actually have to pay in game currency for this "new skin".

Skins = meaningful content now? What are you mad about again?

Okay. Get outta here man, you are embarassing yourself over and over.

Yes this free content. Pray tell what is the schedule for new modes and maps and all these bountiful free content I keep hearing about? Or should I just wait a year for my $60 game to actually be worth the $60 I paid in measure able content?

Enough of this "I didn't get enough for my $60" it's your own fault if you bought it and aren't happy with what's there, a lot of people are happy and feel it was worth the money.

If you would read the conversation you hopped in on I specified legendary skin to begin with. Pallet swaps aren't even new skins.
the 8 hour being optimistic comment is still horribly off for "a" legendary. from the looks of it you are guaranteed a legendary unlock within 20 boxes, which is well under 8 hours.

Overwatch fails any Objective measure of content. Yes I do realize fun can't be measured but I can measure a total lack of mode variety, map variety, skin variety, no single player, pretty much any metric of variety besides class variety overwatch fails. So while you can claim subjective fun the game itself is objectively bare bones to the fullest.

what the fuck is "an objective measure of content"? DOTA2 has one fucking map and is one of the most popular games in the world?

It's not an "objective measure of content". It's a value proposition. Period. Does what's included give you an amount of fun commensurate to what you've invested/paid. It's that simple. Your objective crap instantly measures a 12 hour game like Arkham Asylum worse than a 100 hour SRPG from NISA because hey, the 100 hours SRPG has a ton of content, and AA only has a 12 hour campaign.

the "fun" of a game IS ALL that matters!! "but if game A you are having fun with has more content that game B that you are also having fun with, isn't game A a better game because it has more content?" Why would I possibly care when I'm having fun with both? "oh man.. what is wrong with me for having fun with this game with less content?"

Your argument is pedantic and idiotic.

Enough of this "I didn't get enough for my $60" it's your own fault if you bought it and aren't happy with what's there, a lot of people are happy and feel it was worth the money.

Nvm that. Trophies werent showing up on that site. At least you do own it

Yep, just another one of those "sparse content" games with 21 characters who are all completely different and gameplay that's almost perfectly balanced and fun.

It's a shame it doesn't meet your arbitrary threshold for objective fun. I'm having plenty of subjective fun with it.

Oh, and I paid $17 dollars for it, in case you were wondering.

Agreed.

I completely agree; I should be able to fight the end boss in Legend of Zelda from the get-go! Why do I have to play through the rest of the content for the privilege? I paid for that content on the disc!

There are no grey quality (junk) items. It's white (common), blue (rare), purple (epic) and gold (legendary). Also pretty sure that just like with hs packs, every box will contain at least 1 rare item or better.

Yup. Pretty sure the shittiest roll is 3 whites + 1 blue - never saw or heard of less than that.

There are plenty of boring, soulless, filler-laden open world games if all you're looking for in a game is "content."

I'll stick to Overwatch and have actual fun, thanks.

Enough of this "I didn't get enough for my $60" it's your own fault if you bought it and aren't happy with what's there, a lot of people are happy and feel it was worth the money.

I've already said I enjoy the game. It's not going to stop me from pointing out the obvious, glaring flaw of paltry content.

Ive already said in this thread last page that the only metric this game meets for content is its characters. The characters are great, too bad the rest of the game isn't there yet. If the rest of the game had the variety of the players it would be a great value, not a poor one.

Why are you comparing a mp shooter to open world games? Let's compare it to COD, Destiny, Battlefield, Titanfall, TF2, it's contemporaries. All of which, minus titanfall, launched with and have far far more content and aren't soulless or filler laden.

Yup. Pretty sure the shittiest roll is 3 whites + 1 blue - never saw or heard of less than that.

yes it is identical to the HS model. You can also see the rarity immediately upon opening by looking at the bottoms of the bases as they fly into the air.

It's a move that's been done just to increase micro transactions, which is annoying enough in itself.

annoying that a company is funding future development for all content to release at no additional charge to the player base?

you have an odd sense of what's annoying.

I've already said I enjoy the game. It's not going to stop me from pointing out the obvious, glaring flaw of paltry content.

Nah the content is fine.

Look we could go on all day with this there's no content / there's enough content argument. Opinions ay?

Edit: oh you don't even own the game then? Yet you're acting like they owe you more for your money?

It's a move that's been done just to increase micro transactions, which is annoying enough in itself.

Ok well as I've said about 30 times so far, they're not ever going away. This is a reality of gaming.

Hell, did nobody play arcade games growing up? The term "quarter-muncher" exists for a reason people. This is not a new practice.

Unless you use an emote, or get POTG, or look at your highlights, or you get killed, or it affects your hands/weapon, etc. You probably wont see it for the majority of a match but you certainly do see it.[/QUOTE]

Not really enough to justify complaints about it. Legendary skins should be legendary, and everyone will eventually get the one they want if they just play the game. If you earned everything right away, what would be the point? Some people are just obsessed with instant gratification. This game is in it for the long haul.

I much prefer this type of system where the monetized content is skins, lines, sprays and other non-gameplay related stuff to the usual system of having paid maps, characters, season passes etc.

The latter splits the user base and hurts the gameplay. The former just upsets a few people who hate microtransactions.

I didn't say it's going away. In fact, I said the opposite in my original post. It's been accepted for too long.

Still frustrating, though, and sad that very few games will release as "whole" without trying to squeeze more out of paying customers.

No it's not. 8 hours of game time (that's optimistic) for 1 skin is not like fighting games at all. They average 30 minutes to 2 hours at most.

Once again future content better be free when we got 1/3rd a game at launch. I mean honestly let's look at games that get punished for low content and I can't think of one game that released with less content than Overwatch.

I've earned 10 skins from 6 hours total playtime. Maybe my loot drops are lucky but it's pretty good.

And yes, the devs already announced all future content is free. They're already getting money from loot crates from players who don't wanna get them the normal way.

You're complaining about the voice lines? That is some really nitpicking of a very trivial unlock.

If you had complained about how lazy many of the skins are then you would sorta had a case.

Ive already said in this thread last page that the only metric this game meets for content is its characters. The characters are great, too bad the rest of the game isn't there yet. If the rest of the game had the variety of the players it would be a great value, not a poor one.

It would also not be coming out until 2021, and it would cost $200 to offset production costs.

People need to actually think, not just imagine some fantasy land, but actually THINK about game production and what goes into it.

I enjoy unlocking things, and I would rather those things not have any gameplay relevance so that I don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage if I play less than others. I guess you don't feel the same way. Life is hard.

i thought this thread was going to complain about the gameplay being a new low in FPS, but it's actually complaining about something that doesn't matter instead

True, locked skins and voice samples exist in most full priced fighting games, sometimes attached to real grinds. These things aren't new lows in anything, or even new in general.

Please point out these other fighting games where voice samples and skins are locked the way things are locked in Overwatch. SFV is the only one because they haven't added Zenni and the store yet. Other than that, o can't think of any.

Why are you comparing a mp shooter to open world games? Let's compare it to COD, Destiny, Battlefield, Titanfall, TF2, it's contemporaries. All of which, minus titanfall, launched with and have far far more content and aren't soulless or filler laden.

I don't have as much fun with any of those games as I do Overwatch. The amount of "content" (I'm assuming you mean maps?) couldn't matter less to me.

Nah the content is fine.

Look we could go on all day with this there's no content / there's enough content argument. Opinions ay?

Edit: oh you don't even own the game then? Yet you're acting like they owe you more for your money?

Where did I say I don't own the game? I own it for ps4 psn:gatti-man I was playing it all week lol.

It would also not be coming out until 2021, and it would cost $200 to offset production costs.

People need to actually think, not just imagine some fantasy land, but actually THINK about game production and what goes into it.

I didn't realize maps and modes took so long to design from a giant studio like blizzard. I guess there goes the argument for free content since by your estimates we won't get anything meaningful for 3 years. /s

I've earned 10 skins from 6 hours total playtime. Maybe my loot drops are lucky but it's pretty good.

And yes, the devs already announced all future content is free. They're already getting money from loot crates from players who don't wanna get them the normal way.

You mean pallet swaps not skins. Unless you are world best lucky. Pallet swaps do not equal skins to me. Let's be specific. That's also incredibly lucky as is.

Sure, if by "too long" you mean "since the beginning of capitalism".

These "I just want the world to change how it operates" posts are getting ridiculous.

Um, are we going to pretend there weren't generations of consoles where you would buy a game, that was just a complete product for the money you paid, without any additional purchases encouraged or locking away content?

:\

It would be preferable if you unlocked the costumes from playing with specific characters, but I do like earning (or even randomly unlocking) rare things that other people don't have. If they gave you everything up front they would see a bit less special. I personally am not bothered by micro-transactions if they are just for cosmetic items, but I can see why someone would be. Calling this a new low is certainly an exaggeration though. It is not new and certainly not near the lowest form of micro-transactions.

Why are you comparing a mp shooter to open world games? Let's compare it to COD, Destiny, Battlefield, Titanfall, TF2, it's contemporaries. All of which, minus titanfall, launched with and have far far more content and aren't soulless or filler laden.

You're bringing up launch Destiny in a content argument? That was the most barren, soulless experience in a long time. I would take OW any day over that or COD etc.

What is your measuring stick for content with say Battlefield? BF4 launched with 10 maps, OW has 12. BF4 has a bunch of different guns with minor differences between most... OW has 21 completely unique (and balanced) characters. Is it the unlocking of attachments that is fun to you?

Fun = content, its simple.
