Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

They also need to make sure it is good on power consumption. It would require a bigger battery and more charging time. Plus they literally just released the new keyboards. Current keyboards and mice last forever on their batteries.
 
Honestly I now want the Pro's to have removable batteries. How am I supposed to be without professional equipment for two weeks when it comes time to replace the battery after 3 years?

Unless you live in the Artic or something, that doesn't explain "two weeks". Batteries don't take two weeks. Removable batteries in laptops suck. You give up so much volume to the battery assembly, connections, and mechanisms that could go to more battery and less overall size. New MacBooks (and Windows ultrabooks, so not even Apple exclusive) get great battery life while being way thinner and lighter than laptops of 5-10 years ago.

oh I don't care. I'm buying the first revision of this thing. I rarely ever plug shit into my laptop it could have no ports and I'd still buy it. gimme dat space gray 15 inch beauty

I'm sort of in the same boat. At worst I'll have to get a single USB-C adapter and replace some cables (which I can do on Monoprice for next to nothing.)

You have an Air. Not a Pro. My Pro takes two weeks because changing battery means replacing the entire top case (or bottom, forgot). At least on a 2012 model.

I know this because I had to replace both a Pro and an Air, and only the pro was the issue.

So yes, two weeks. Call any Apple store and check.
 
9to5 backs up the report: New MacBooks expected to feature Touch ID power button as well as OLED touch-panel

A source who has provided reliable information in the past has informed us that the new MacBook Pro models, expected to be launched in the fall, will feature a Touch ID power button as well as the previously-reported OLED touch-sensitive function keys.

The KGI note which first reported the OLED function key display also suggested that the new MacBook Pros would offer ‘Touch ID support,’ but did not contain any specifics. Incorporating it into the power button would clearly make sense, allowing the same one-touch process to power-on and authenticate as is possible with the Home button on current iPhones. Resources spotted in macOS Sierra also hint at Touch ID on future Macs.

Will be just another throw away computer, like 99% of laptops on the market.

I guarantee you you won't be able to upgrade the storage or RAM yourself. And the battery will be some weird design that is not user replaceable.

Sick of this shit really. The Surface line is the worst as far as disposable PC's go. When the batteries start going to shit, you are screwed.

The battery will last usually about 5 years. And I usually resell mine before that, since they tend to keep their resell value better relative to the rest of the market.

But I wouldn't say you're screwed, because Apple does offer battery replacement service. Yes, it's expensive, but it's an option.
 
I really really like the 'one port to rule them all' philosophy behind the unified USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 connectors, but I also *really* don't like that Apple is getting rid of MagSafe - as someone who actually totally does the infomercial-bungler thing of tripping over my power cord all the time, I appreciate that it just yanks the cable out from the computer instead of pulling the computer with it.

It's entirely possible that magsafe will still exist.
 
Belkin and others make MagSafe options for USB C. I, for one, look forward to being able to use third party power adapters and batteries.

The problem with magsafe is that it requires a new connector to actually do the safe cord ejection, which doesn't fit with the idea of a USB-C future. One could try to build it into the cable itself instead (Xbox 360 style) but that seems like a whole lot of expense/complication when I think they'd rather just use USB-C and hope that the metal chassis and small connector size reduces the profile for damage.

It's a shame - I like Magsafe - but until somebody cooks up "Magsafe USB" I think it's a dead idea for Apple. (For Belkin and everyone else who likes add on bits, of course it's still viable)

Yeah. There'll be lots of positive tradeoffs for switching to USB-C for sure, and I don't deny that at all, but the specific use cases that MagSafe was designed for will go back to being an unsolved problem.
 
TouchID is the best so I welcome this addition to the laptops.

Skeptical about the OLED buttons but they worked some magic with the new trackpad, which is an actual improvement over the mechanical version, so I will wait until impressions and until I can try it myself before I jump to any conclusions.

I love MagSafe though. :(

Yep. Thats why you get as much RAM and SSD as you can to start with because you won't be able to later. Need to do the same thing with phones and tablets too. All computers are disposable these days. Save for most desktops. (But even the Mac Pro can be upgraded. Just wait for the iMac to stop being upgradable at all.)

The one benefit to using a standard for charging I guess. I'd miss Magsafe, but really I've never ended up using it for its intended purpose, that being when someone trips over the cable and it yanks out. But with Magsafe you couldn't get third party stuff without getting something really sketchy by a company who wasn't licensed to make it. At least with USB-C charging third parties can make their own cables and you'll be fine. I'll have to look into some MagSafe USB-C chargers when the time comes. I don't get why Apple doesn't make their own.

My problem with MagSafe for myself is that when I sit with my laptop on my lap, the cable gets knocked out. it's annoying. With the old L design it wasn't a big problem but with the T design it just gets knocked off. So I won't miss that.

I look forward to finally seeing the new machines. Even though my current machine has plenty of life left in it because I went with the high end last time instead of a more disposable low end like I used to. I used to get Airs and whatever the entry level was at the time and ended up upgrading every year for 3 years straight. So after 4 years I decided it was time to just go all out. 15" i7 rMBP with dual GPU, 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. And as long as nothing else goes wrong with it (Aside from the keyboard which I STILL need to get replaced.) I plan on keeping it for at least another year if not two. But I'm sure the next machines will make me really want to upgrade sooner.

See this stuff does make me intrigued. I like fancy stuff. And if the Touch ID means I no longer need to type my password to wake my computer, and possibly integration with both Keychain and 1Password (Please!) then it'll be even more amazing. I don't have an AppleWatch so I'm sad I can't have the instant unlocking iOS 10/Sierra will be bringing, but this would be a good substitution.

I wonder if the new Pro will drop the glowing Apple logo too. I'm kind of sad to see a bunch of "Mac distinguishing features" being abandoned like the logo and the MagSafe but I can suck it up if it brings a bunch of new stuff.

It's speculated that Apple will add external GPU support to the OS so that a retina 5k 27" screen can be sold (with a GPU built-in)— since they make so few computers that can support that resolution.

And I will be buying all of them. Collectively in my house we're buying: iPhone 7, two Apple Watches, two MacBooks (maybe three), new Apple TV if there is one, new iPad Pro 12.9" if there is one, new iPad Mini if there is one

Heh, yep. I'm due for a lot of upgrades over the next year - gonna get rid of my five-year-old MacBook and my iPhone 6 and go for an iPhone 7+, the next iMac 5K revision, an Apple Watch, and probably an iPad Pro 9.7" whenever it gets 3D Touch.

No strong need to upgrade my Apple TV though - so far it's a pretty humble device and extra processing power won't really do anything for it.

I want it, but I also want something that can play back 4K HDR h.265 10-bit Netflix on a laptop. That's the big driving force for me.

And I don't think I have a chance of getting that until Kaby Lake GPUs.

And I don't think I have a chance of getting Kaby Lake until next year.

Otherwise, Haswell is honestly holding up nicely.

Seriously, this has so much more potential really. I mean the only apps that even use the F keys as F keys are either Microsoft programs or games. And in those cases they'll be easily configured to act as F keys.

I use the keys up there for opening apps and for the controls they give. And keep them as F keys for default since Minecraft needs them (Even if I don't play often. I hate that you can't reconfigure all the F keys in that game. At least not easily.) so I hold Shift+F? for my apps like Safari, Mail, iTunes, System Preferences, Activity Monitor, etc.

If they made it context sensitive in that when in Minecraft or a game they display as F keys themselves, but elsewhere I could have them just act as controls for iTunes, brightness and volume and the other stuff they do now then it'd be amazing. I can see a lot of potential. I mean its not like they're replacing the entire keyboard with a screen or something. (Yet. Maybe in 2020. Much to people's dismay.)

No MagSafe is a huge bummer.

Multiple USB C ports good.
