Destiny: Rise of Iron Launches September 20th (PS4/XB1), lots of details leak

This guy again, "holding back content man"

Weren't there weapons in the trailer for TTK that we don't have to this day? Like that fire version of the Thunderlord.

Yup. Prison of Elders was originally a more raid like experience very early but was retooled.

A fallen raid has been rumoured since launch but never made it to a release window. Pyramidion (Mars location? Cabal ship?) and a Cabal raid was also planned but that looks like it's been shelved for D2 at this point.

Yup.

They axed a lot of stuff throughout the whole lifespan of the game.

If you were one of the fucking dweebs (like me) that read all of the database pulls from Bungie.net since before the game came out you saw a ton of items and quests/raids that never came to be (game was supposed to have chapters like a halo game, have multiple raids at launch including the dark below one at least).

Dreadnaught was supposed to be in the original game and Osiris was supposed to be part of the game as well. Both were featured in trailers for the game like 1-1.5 yr out from release. They axed a fuckload of stuff due to all the issues and turmoil they had - shelved a lot of it for DLC/Destiny 2.

They basically restarted the whole game one year from launch.

If they are dropping last-gen, it means all future new content for the duration of Year 3 can remain in the new social space.

It would keep the Tower consistent across both game versions, too.

That makes no sense. It isn't like last and current gen versions are cross-compatible.

That's...not really a semantic difference though. It's the difference between finishing content and holding it back to sell later (the implication being to screw people over somehow), and having plans early on to deliver a certain project scope at a certain time, and then changing those plans. The latter is what has been happening with Destiny.

It's semantic in the sense that, from the player's perspective, the bottom line in either case is that promised content does not arrive until a later release with an additional price-tag attached. Whether Bungie failed to plan or planned to fail doesn't really matter because the players still have to pay again for content they were sold but didn't receive the first time.

Cool raid weapons, sure but no more elemental primaries outside of exotics. You'd never use any other weapons.

It's probably why the raid weapons felt less cool in Year 2

People don't use different guns now, so what's the difference if there is a burn or not? At least burns gave the raid weapons something unique since they are shackled by Crucible weapon balance.

I still hope for the day they can just give Crucible it's own set of weapons and switch to a loadout based system. Let exotics and raid weapons actually be interesting and creative. Nothing will change as long as someone gets to stand over someones shoulder and say "Well, this will kill the balance in PVP."

"New Strike"

There's no way it's just one, right? Like... no way. Even TTK had 3 (plus a PS exclusive), and honestly that felt (and still kind of does) like way too few.

Destiny 2 really should launch with like... 7 or 8 strikes.

Considering strikes are basically the end game content for players who don't raid weekly it seems kind of strange. My only thought is the live team will deliver strikes periodically and we will get remixed version of existing strikes with plauged fallen.

at this point

it'll probably launch with 2 strikes, 1 ps+ exclusive, and 10 remixed strikes.</s>

You better bet gour ass Sony's getting an extra strike.
Only one strike for Xbox One owners is really barebones in my opinion.

It's probably just the last major update before Destiny 2 or something.

Destiny 2 should launch with like 10 that have variations. Nothing better to kill your playerbase than small amounts of repetitive content. Ah vanilla Destiny...

Now that you mention it, as much as I hate the idea of another year where half the strikes are reused from the previous expansions with new enemies, I'd actually love to have Devils' Lair make a comeback...

Huh? Please prove to me that you pay attention at all and find an old post because I don't make it a habit to rag on anything unless its totally valid.

Edit: Kotaku's story has made it apparent that they work on stuff all the time and purposely make choices on what content to finish & release first. Is it all finished? Probably not. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was a decision to hold off on finishing some content for this release and focus on it for Destiny 2.

If you have a finite number of resources it makes sense to release something small in an update/expansion and they release a large amount of a content for a sequel product. Maybe Destiny 2 isn't that far off after this release? If so, it wouldn't make sense for them to maker Rise of Iron the same size as TTK.
We can count as a certainty that stuff gets cut before release. However, I believe that 'planning for the future' is of minimal consequence when making these decisions. Everything that has ever been done with Destiny indicates a broken internal pipeline. What we get is the very best the team is capable of releasing in a given timeframe. Nothing is cut to be sold piecemeal. Pieces are sold because 'something has to be sold and this is what we got.'

/blog hat

Almost everything about Destiny is haphazard which we can agree upon is worth a valiantry of effort to correct. The master plan theory of purposefully selling less content makes me laugh. If anything we unto ward want to sell more content! I completely understand the point of view that this is done on purpose and for that I would say the 100% infusion QOL change launching in companionship with microtransactable armor boxes is something worth considering when casting your aspersionitude about.

Really looking forward to this. Our raid group just got back together again recently and we are all having a great time playing. All we needed was a little break and now we're ready for more.

Just remembered one thing, now when people are asking for matchmaking for raids again. I played some Division and tried to match make for one of those incursions, did not go well. Can't wait to hear about all the crazy matchmaking stories if they include that. :lol

Because these are not big news. They are most likely to be buried by other megatons announcements. I have no idea why people are so bothered by the idea that game announcement need to be made at E3.

theres got to be a Destiny 2 teaser or something at sony's conference. Destiny is huge for Sony in sales and the exclusive content they drag over.

I remember when I started TTK on the xbox in February and no one was doing half the open world quests in the search......still plenty showed up for PS4 though. I would love to see the gap in player bases between the two consoles.

Does anyone not buy the whole "upper Bungie management hated the story" deal. Story isn't something that you hide from upper management, they have meetings about this constantly. Assets and areas are being built from the story (we know Osiris and his area, + some amount of Dreadnaught were modeled out 1 yr + release of game)

I feel like it was more them telling story team "we have to butcher and throw out like 95% of your story because we can't make release and Activision won't push it back again. Keeping the story would be impossible because we have to ditch planets entirely and it wouldn't make any sense. We just have to ditch all of it and focus on getting something out the door."

And then Staten basically wouldn't take it lying down and created dissent trying to fight back so Bungie mgmt shunned and isolated him and his writing team as they wrested story away from him and did re-recording themselves.

I know in my heart of hearts this is so much more likely.

Matchmaking for Raids is gonna be a hell. But this discussion comes back every update haha. For Nightfalls they can add it. Its not that difficult anymore in year 2 and no kick to orbit.

Yeah, totally agree. No idea why there's no matchmaking for the Nightfalls yet.

The land where the plague exists is known as The Plaguelands.

Imagine invoicing for that writing. What a job.

Yeah, who knows? Bungie. Maybe we'll get the full picture some time in the future. Let's hope Jason Schreier delivers on this.

Make it optional and problem solved.

I would imagine it's gonna come out whenever Joe Staten's NDA expires. But when he was asked for comment he was so fucking broken and sad about it, I don't know if he'll ever speak out.

They fucked up our boy dirty. It must have been a completely horrible, abusive, cancerous working environment for him.

I honestly feel like they should just make an "easy mode" version of a raid and do matchmaking for that. Simple mechanics that average players can learn and complete.

Then you can make friends and raid groups that way, and then do the harder raids with people you meet from there looking to step up the challenge and get better rewards.

I totally agree, fine with nightfalls but leave the raids alone.

Well, the early reports didn't indicate upper management not liking the story, themselves, but rather that they got a poor response to it in focus testing.

Even if that was the case, surely what they had originally would have been better than the end result. Which was a barebones fucking joke with poor production.

I feel like the story was the internal scapegoat because we know the engine was a complete fucking mess and their ability to produce was hindered to a laughable degree. They dropped entire zones from the game because it was just unmanageable. So I think that the story blaming aspect is super fishy.
