Giant Bomb @ E3 2016 | WEED3

My biggest thing with the Sony conference is that those Gravity Rush, Abzu, and Bound trailers all looked cool and are all for games coming out this year. The show only ran for about an hour 15 minutes, I have no idea why they couldn't run those trailers along with everything else. They definitely would have diversified the lineup a bit. I enjoyed the conference, but that keeps bugging me.

Also, games are great and all but since most games shown at this things I don't really care (and they had no indie showcase) I wish they had talked about the platform and how that's going to evolve.

I have no interest in like 90 per cent of this AAA stuff so showing me more about the PlayStation platform would be great. I think MS did a great job with that. And they had an indie showcase too.

This kind of shows you can't please everyone, normally a lot of people complain through the Indie showcase, it's boring etc (I love it). If there isn't a 'megaton' announcement every 5 seconds the show is terrible. I think Sony maybe reacted to that critisism.

Personally I like hearing people talk about the platform, but I also enjoyed what we got.

People have wildly different a taste a lot of people thought Sony's E3 last year was the best they have had and this years was great i am one of those people.

Not everyone who is a fan of GB has this pessimistic/cynical attitude towards games.

I mean, I'm definitely aware that I'm more cynical towards games than most people, but I still love them shits.

It's just that I'm having a hard time comprehending how people call those 3 the highlights of last year's show.

Like what is a Shenmue sequel supposed to be? The game was fine 15 years ago because it was totally new and unqiue, but today? I'm not saying it's definitely going to end up being trash or anything like that, but can we stop with the hype for a moment and take at least a more cautiously optimistic stance?

Same goes for TLG. There are reasons why they delayed the game for 10 years.

People are just so caught up in nostalgia and hype and end up disappointed half the time when it's all said and done. And it's kinda frustrating, especially when there were some really fucking cool looking new games on the floor.

edit: I also think it says a lot about the state of the entire gaming fandom when people call others jaded and cynical, just because they don't get hyped by names and logos.

No, they're not jaded because they didn't get hyped about Sony's conference, they're jaded because they've been in this press for +20 years and they rarely ever show any excitement for anything.

You make it sound like this jaded thing just started because of Sony's conference, they've been called jaded for as long as I can remember.

Like I said, don't get me wrong, I like the guys a lot and I listen to their opinions about games more than anyone else but they're still jaded and cynical as fuuuuuuck.

I think they are restrained and not jaded. But in a world where people call stuff "the year of dreams" or start screaming for game trailers that is jaded.

There excitement is palpable about a lot of games so I just don't get that complaint.

Anyway, I don't care if they are jaded or not. They are hands down the most interesting press outlet today that act like normal people and have good and interesting conversation about games from all kinds. So yeah, I don't care.

And Sonys conference was okay. So I guess Im jaded too.

Probably because they have Gamescom or Paris, or whichever one they're showing up to this time followed by TGS. This was their big, mostly "this shit gonna sell" lineup, followed by some weirdness and mid-tier stuff in Europe and the more Japanese stuff at TGS. I don't think GR2 bad a date even?

For sure. The reactions here have been positive so I guess they did the right thing.

But it just wasn't for me.

Horizon looked cool at least.

Oh wow, them saying 'that's cool' eradicates 8 years worth of me hearing Jeff being jaded about games.

That's cool.

You and Kiguel act like I'm insulting them because I called them jaded, I'd probably be jaded too my job revolves around games and I had been doing it for 20 years. I don't think it's a bad thing that they're jaded but they are.
They aren't screaming so they are jaded.

I thought you didn't care.

Please clarify then how you differentiate "learned" from "jaded" and "thoughtful" from "cynical", cuz that looks like some goddamn enthusiasm to me.

Edit: in replying to your edit, I don't think you know what jaded means. Every goddamn year they talk about tingling feelings getting ready for E3. Some of the crew spend an entire day driving there just for the sake of talking and tradition, for Christ's sake. They don't have this job out of spite.

Sure, but they released trailers today for those games and two of them ship in August (I think you're right about Gravity Rush though). I would get it if this conference was a packed two hours of big AAA games, but I felt like there was room for something a little more artsy. It's probably my only real disappointment of the conference that they had no indie presence despite being so good about that in the past.

So I watched the Giant Bomb stream of the Sony conference after seeing the conference separately, and man am I glad that I skipped watching their stuff the first time. The cynicism in that room seemed contagious. Dan was the only one that seemed like he was down for any of that stuff.

I really wish they'd stop streaming conferences together like this. When they're in a group a lot of the guys seem to start unconsciously mirroring Jeff's aggressive disinterest, and given his tastes have gotten pretty narrow over the years, it's a problem. If half had been there live and the other half had watched remotely when they got back together we'd probably get an interesting discussion of what everyone thought and how it struck people differently instead of this groupthink.

Yeah, they were in the pre-show, which was a bit strange. I'm honestly thinking that Sony are just going to have a laser focus on each event going forward. Will work out great for Bound if they're doing Gamescom as it will be out a few days later.

So is there going to be nightly podcasts? I could've sworn they used to do a nightly wrap up podcast (free) but haven't seen anything on my feed

What an amazing conference from Sony. New Gears of War, release date for TLG, Horizon looking dope, Kojima craziness on PS4, Resident Evil VII, Spider-Man from Insomniac and no Destiny and No Man's Sky.

That Crash though. fuck you Shawn.

I wonder what their thoughts on Crash are internally. It was obviously started as a nostalgia nod for the 20th anniversary and nothing more. They don't own the property and Activision wanted it in skylanders. The fans ran away with rumors though.

The crash remaster collection was quickly mentioned and felt like something that could have just been negotiated due to the backlash.

Vinny is the only one to me that kind of fills that role in that it feels like he tries to actually watch the trailer/presentation before making jokes/quips/comments about stuff and feels the others out on their opinion a bit more.

I watched almost all conferences with their commentary for the first time this year (except Sony's). I love GB's commentary but it just annoyed me that they were talking over stuff while things got announced and said on the stream and I couldn't hear what was actually being said. I know people like these reaction videos but I guess I'll just watch the "highlight" video next year and watch their other E3 stuff, which I do like.

Exception to the above being the Battlefield 1 stream, that trainwreck needed commentary from them over it and it didn't disappoint.

Also, I had a few hiccups with their stream via YT and it seems they had some issues with streaming (through Gamespot(?)) during some conferences. Not a big deal but seeing how smooth that YT 1080p60 stream was for 10-12 hours, I hope it will get better next year.

Enjoy the rest of the show everyone!

Honestly, considering there was nothing to show, they had to do that Skylanders plug and it's just remastered, I don't think anything was planned when Layton wore that T-Shirt. It was just afterwards he thought "Shit, we have to do that now".

Weird that Mafia 3 didn't get much of a showing at the console conferences. It looks really interesting.

Game's out in a couple months, and I don't think it's big enough to buy up main conference time. IT's been making the Stage Show tour anyways

If anything Jeff isn't jaded enough. He still gets excited when new Just Cause games get announced only to be disappointed. See also: THPS5.

people have been calling giant bomb jaded from the moment that site started. i prefer their reserved approach to reveals and press conferences, and when the time is right and the games are out they can be utterly effusive about games. see the recent discussions about DOOM and overwatch.

just because they're not game-trailers-jumping-around-the-room-at-shenmue excited doesn't mean they hate video games. they just look at these big flashy shows with a different tone. honestly during E3 season when everyone is either saying this is the best thing ever or this is the worst thing ever, their approach is refreshing. i don't want those dudes to try to be anyone they aren't, and i feel like I've seen and heard enough from
all of them over the years that, for better or worse, I can trust that their reactions are genuine

Do you guys think Horizon girl is a former youtuber and that's why she talks so much? When the youtube goes, the robot apocalypse comes, and she can't shut it off.

Except that even when the team is ecstatic about a game, people will write because they talk too much about said game. ( overwatch is the most recent example).

I'd rather watch gb's somewhat mild reaction to Sony's conference to the utterly ridiculous Easy Allies meltdown.

I liked Sony's conference. Some of the criticism by the duders was a bit weird, though.

This was the Meneses Hot Take of the day, stay tuned for future updates.

Jeff isn't jaded tho, just last year he loved Mario Maker and he was hyped for trackmania

I feel like they had good games but it was a weirdly paced bad conference.

Honestly though the VR reel put the worst taste in my mouth. It all looked dumb and short and then they show possibly the worst game to ever make it on a conference in that FF game. That looked so horribly bad.

Sony could have used an extra half hour with slower pacing and more exposition on some of the titles along with maybe one more game. It wasn't a horrible conference it just left me feeling confused.

I'll be honest here

Horizon does nothing for me beyond the fact that it looks nice. Tomb Raider with robots isn't really an appealing concept to me. Single player games about fighting wildlife, to me, are never ever fun.
I was actually semi-excited about God of War set in Norse mythology. I was burnt out on the series but never played Ascension, so a change of his rogues gallery and weaponry made me interested. The game turning into Ryse is not what I wanted. And I can't say 'good on them for changing it up at least' because they're not changing from Kratos. So it's like this half-ass risk.
I think Last Guardian will be bad to average. That game never looks good to me.
The acting in that Detroit video was hilarious

That's my hot take.

Fantastapotamus

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
THe thing with Sony is: They show cool games but way, waaaay too early.
Last Guardian is the only game out of those "year of dreams" that might come out in the next few months. Shenmue and FF7 will come out 2018 at it's earliest. That Kojima game won't be out before 2019. Microsoft's "problem" is that they show games that might actually come out next year. That makes for a much less exciting showing.

Wow. Steep looks great. I can't imagine the genre is big enough to be successful but it really looks astounding.

Like this first person footage is amazing

Yeah, really looking forward to see if they can pull that off. But I was burned by The Crew, so not holding my breath right now.

It does. And ti's a REALLY weird game for Ubisoft to be putting out because it seems like such a huge gamble that likely won't sell well at all which seems so out of place for an Ubisoft title.

but hopefully it does and EA is forced to make Skate 4. It was kind of funny to watch the bails in the trailer because you could tell they were trying to do a skate video 'hah that guy goofed' thing but since it's snowboarding at these steep inclines it's like 'that dude's fucking dead holy shit'

Steep and Forza Horizon 3 are filling my 'man I just wanna fuck around' void that games tend to forget about
