Crowd running to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3

Googling about I'm seeing stuff saying that the demo was an hour to an hour and a half long, although that's preshow reports of how much time Nintendo were asking attendees to put aside for the demo. Here.

Taking the shortest of that estimate (1 hour), the turnover if every person played the demo fully comes to 140 people per hour. According to the E3 website the opening hours were 12-6 on Tues (6 hours), 10-6 on Wed (8 hours) and 10-5 on Thu (7 hours). That works out at 2,940 play sessions over the 3 days. With ~50k people attending the actual show, that's enough time for a little over 5% of attendees to play.

There were two demos for non media members that this line was for. They were 35 minutes total. The 90 minutes was for press who had actual appointments, not the people lining up

Whether or not you personally find the game interesting, most of us were proven wrong when we believed that Nintendo would be lost in the E3 shuffle. They have gotten plenty of attention this E3.

When has Nintendo ever been lost in the shuffle? Even if they didn't have a legion of devoted fans, the Treehouse stuff guarantees them exposure.

Not really, last year was very ho hum. They had some good stuff but they were decimated by the competition.

All three have good and bad E3s. They get exposure but sometimes they just get snuffed.

Huh, seems like having Zelda there at launch will be a huge boon for NX. And it looks like a really fun game, can't wait.

It will be very interesting to see how the NX does if Zelda is indeed their only "killer app" at launch. You can make comparisons to Twilight Princess and the Wii here, but from day 1, the crux of the Wii hype was Wii Sports and the crossover appeal it had to non-traditional audiences. If that crowd doesn't come back, what's the ideal performance of the NX at launch, even if Zelda is the greatest game ever made, has a 100 Metascore, and wins every award possible?

Seriously might be the first Zelda game I embark on.

And lol at the commentary in this thread. Who won E3? The gamers did. PC gamers are getting tons of new shit from the Xbox crowd, the Xbox crowd is getting a bunch of titles like Dead Rising and Recore, Nintendo is pushing out a hugely revamped Zelda title, and Sony has a bunch of shit on deck too.

Spend more time enjoying video games than searching for validation, lol.

Anyway, good to see people rushing to the stations in excitement. When people enjoy this hobby, it's a beautiful site.

So double it, about 10% of attendees.

140 stations sounds like a lot, but in reality that's not a lot of supply for a lot of demand. I don't blame people for running. The proportion of people who went to E3 and actually got to play Zelda is quite a significant minority.

I dunno, I recall some pretty ridiculous hyperbole about Mario Maker last year.

The thread where Nintendo announced that they would only bring Zelda was filled with people telling them not to bother or not to show up.

Man I remember last year, got in line to play star fox zero when the doors opened. The dude cut the line off after I got in line. When I asked him how long did he think i'd be in line for, he told me til closing.

Got out of that fucking line as soon as possible. It was weird though because you could play the game at other booths, this was just so you could get in an arwing cockpit and get a pin. Ended up playing the game at a smaller booth at the end of the day ( the rep told me I completed the demo faster than anyone he's seen).
Dude, that rep was the video game version of this chick.

Told us what?

Yes, people are hungry for this game, but what's the most a Zelda game has ever sold?

They're all multi-million sellers. What exactly were you trying to imply?

True, but they only have so much space and preparing stations also costs money.

Still, these type of lines filling up so quickly is still pretty damn rare to my understanding

Lol get out with that hyperbole.

Did you even watch the E3 press conferences?

It's E3! Of course there's going to be hyperbole! :p

IMO:

Microsoft looks set to face plant.

Sony had a a few things I guess. There was their big VR push, but I'm entirely unconvinced. The Kojima teaser isn't even a game. What else? Um… Mythological murder simulator? More zombie games? Ehh. Well, at least Crash Bandicoot looks cool. Honestly, I think the most exciting Sony-related thing I saw was Wild Guns Reloaded.

Lol. Demo was not 1 hour to 1.5 hours long for attendees. Would've loved it if so. The demo had two sessions -- one was 15 minutes (start in the middle of the forest) and the other was 25 minutes (start from the beginning of the game).

And 140 stations dedicated to one game is a lot and the most ever dedicated to a single game at E3. And it wasn't nearly enough.

Here 10.95 million for Ocarina.

Zelda has always been about selling consoles to the hardcore Nintendo fans in the west.

When the Wii launched, Twilight Princess sold with the console to 75% of the consumers. 3 out of 4 Wii purchases.

And I must remind you how hard it was to get a Wii for months?

Very good sales! Making this an NX launch title is a great move, and based on the enthusiasm this could top OOT if all goes well.

It's not the kind of series that sells, say, Mario Kart numbers. That's what I'm talking about with tempering expectations (ie 10 million vs 30 million)

Edit: I would say the same thing about a face melting 3D Mario game. People would be floored (ala Galaxy, which certainly knocked my pants off) but that enthusiasm wouldn't necessarily translate into earth shattering sales.

U guys know what, i am really tired on hearing that Nintendo only brought a single game to E3 here.

This mantra is being repeated again and again just feel disrespectful especially when there are Many other games which Nintendo brought here.

Pokemon, Color Splash, Sharp FE, Rhythm Heaven, Yokai Watch 2, Dragon Quest 7, Mario Party and even actually a new IP.

It is like, people can't seems to be accept that maybeeee, Nintendo actually did something that click with a lot of gamers here?

This game is like a breath of fresh air, when I saw Link cooking the shrooms it was so cute, I knew I had to play it. I'll probably won't play it in a long time so I'll add it to my bucket list when prices are really low.
A cheap Zelda game? Good luck with that! :p

i'm honestly not seeing without a doubt, i'm seeing more games that i would rather play and i'm a fan of zelda franchise, like every open world there tons of things to do, the graphics are not impressive, the combat looks dated and slow, i'm not seeing where this game is pushing new boundaries, except that its zelda in a open world.

a contributor thats a huge zelda fan, not forbes.

Well, you seems to be a huge fans of many Nintendo games and yet you can't stop bashing them for almost everything lol.

Even then, you are at E3, literally tons of games and experiences to choose and enjoy, with a limited time to play what you want to play, and all those people decided to spend a good percentage of those hours waiting for the chance to play Zelda.

And I am aware to the vast majority of this people its their job to play it. But if there was no hype for it, they wouldn't bother hard enough to fill the line in less than half an hour..

k I'll say right now that that Pokemon thing they showed before Zelda is probably the most boring thing I've ever seen at E3. Just excruciating. It was like the polar opposite of Zelda lol.

Wow, I mean....I loved the trailer and gameplay I saw online, but I wouldn't run to wait on a long line to play the game. But this does indicate that Nintendo really took everyone by surprise with this new Zelda adventure.

I do wonder though, will people run out to get Wii U's after E3 thanks to Zelda, or just wait until the NX comes out some point next year and get Zelda on that.

Either way, Nintendo has a hit and hopefully people are happy with the final game.

When you can do those kind of actions... it will make anyone more curious and want to know more, imo.
"What can I do in this game ?"

Or, you know, it's because people like to play video games and Zelda happens to be one of the biggest gaming franchises ever. And of course, the game looks incredible.

Let's not be obtuse: Shu isn't people. He's the president of Sony's gaming division. Yes, he may legitimately like this Zelda game; regardless, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a PR move. It's a good one too, because people, like some folks in this topic, will hear Shu's statement and think, "Wow, Shu's such a nice guy, he even embraces his competitor's games! More people should be like the staff at Sony!" Just like when Sony execs tweeted congratulations to Microsoft on their Xbox One launch.

And no, this post is not to shit on Sony. They're smart to make moves like this. But as snarky and dour as GAF can be, it should be apparent as to what Sony is doing by making statements like these.

I don't know how it is these days, but I remember the E3 that they had Metroid Prime on display there were huge lines to play. I was attending as media and their PR guy went up and kicked someone off the game and said "Sorry, press demo." and handed me the controller. It was glorious. :D

Well of course it is going to be boring if you place them right after Zelda which looks absolutely awesome but it still does not make the statement that Nintendo only had Zelda any true especially when Treehouse keep pumping games for this two days.
