Should Sony Release PS4 Exclusives on the PC 3 to 4 Years After Release?

Yes, GAF is an extremely small subset of hardcore gamers, that being a small subset of gamers in general. Not everyone can game on-the-go, let alone with a PC (he must mean laptop) that is capable of running games in a decent manner.

I think it's obvious that we are moving to games as a service and for Sony it already happened with PS Now. Eventually you'll see the console go away and the only way to play MS or Sony's games are through their service. Eventually.

If you venture outside of GAF and GameFAQs you'll quickly see that the PC platform is pretty much the go-to for most gaming discussions communities out there, especially reddit and 4chan. It doesn't really surprise me that there's been a rise in threads like these. An entire zeitgeist raised on steam sales and >90% of major titles seeing an eventual steam release couldn't be expected to act much differently.

But yeah, "catalog-begging", I like that term. It really captures the weird memetic aspect of how PC fanboys internalize certain attitudes w/r/t that don't come up in console fanbases. So much gets thrown around about "open platform" and "anti-consumer" and whatnot that it starts to be applied in weird ways to justify - convincingly in the eyes of the complainer, I'm pretty sure - what's actually just plain port-begging that wouldn't benefit the would-be porting company financially the way they seem to think.

Anyways, I've run my mouth ITT way too much as it is, gonna leave it at that.

right now they probably feel it best for them to continue selling you game boxes, accessories, multiplayer subscriptions, encourage you to use their network for all your media needs, and in turn receive their cut from everything - by leveraging their exclusives.

when that strategy becomes threatened, they will invest in bringing their ecosystem and exclusive games to other devices in the form of their own app or store. Even though it will harm their box sales, multiplayer subscriptions and discourage you from using their ecosystem for all your media needs, it may be the only way their network remains viable/successful.

we are watching it happen to microsoft right now.

It wouldn't need to be huge, it would be just a gamble to plant a seed that doesn't cost much to possibly reap some rewards. Are EA Origin, GoG, Ubisof Store, Batllenet, etc, huge? It would just need to be profitable, to make sense. Lets remember that Sony had an almost PC exclusive division just the other day.
 
They have to sell hardware which is the major part of their gaming businesses, cant really sell hardware with och some nice games multiplatform or not.

Not to mention stuff like psplus,PSVR and other things to consider.

I agree. Perhaps they are not showing their whole strategy at this point, but if they are not working towards this they probably should be or they will be in for another rude awakening down the line. I would not be surprised if they are building out the PlayStation platform right now, with their own "universal apps". Whether or not they build from the ground up or modify and piggyback something established like Android is anyone's guess. I know the thread title is kind of like port begging, but I honestly think we'll see it. Maybe "next" generation from Sony.

Honestly, it's where the money is. If OP had asked this question 5 years ago I would have laughed, but I think it's coming. Maybe sooner than we think.

How many people are going to get rid of their consoles at the drop of a hat for $1,000+ PC rigs? How many people are going to buy $30-60 Sony titles on PC? Which of these numbers do you think is larger?

Say what you want about not weakening the appeal of the PS4 for strategic reasons. But to argue that they wouldn't make more money by reaching a much larger total audience seems a little silly.

Having faith in something is useless from a business perspective. Long tail sales guarantee some revenue over time. But any PC developer will tell you that it is the first week of a game's sales that make or break them. Once sales, price cuts, and interest drop off come into the picture that revenue drops precipitously. Which means that if there isn't sufficient interest of if the asking price too high there is a very real danger that that port will never make the development and marketing cost back.

If you don't have any answer to practical business and development concerns besides having "faith in PC," then you really don't have any business making this argument. It's just something you think would be nice to have, but you obviously don't have any idea what you're talking about.

Hint: talking about used consoles and PS4 game sales doesn't actually help your argument.

Do you think it so simple as to place up a storefront and call it a day?

And I like how people are forgetting that they just now created a VR system and having that shit in direct competition with other, stronger VR systems would spell absolute doom.

A division is not their entire library.

Some of you PC people need to just face facts and accept that not every game is coming to your platform.

And every platform has "video games". I'm not sure what your point is. They have the right to make a video game themselves, or pay others to make a video game for them, and use that as an incentive to lure customers to their respective platforms. This is, factually speaking, competition.
 
I think Sony will continue with the hardware business for the foreseeable future and will likely keep their games exclusive to that hardware for as long as their business model can be sustained.

If PC had a popular open-source OS I imagine 10-15 years down the line they would probably put PSN with all their games on there, and sell PS-branded PC hardware. But no way will they do so when Windows 10 is the de facto PC OS.

Sales are sales. People are saying Sony has vested-interest in making sure people buy their exclusives, but if people don't actually give Sony money, there is literally no argument.

Brb guys. Just got an email from Sony saying "why didn't we think of this?!" and they are sending me a million dollar check because I'm saving their company.

Maybe instead of arguing here you could send those airtight business ideas directly to them and make that dosh.
 
Wish they would. MS gets a lot of flak here for not doing so, but somehow Sony gets a big pass. For what it's worth, I definitely understand why they don't.

This is right on. They'd make a ton of money more too.

The only people against it would be those not wanting their "precious" playstation games on other hardware.

There was some Xbox fan that hilariously flipped out over them putting games on PC too. I'm sure there are Sony only fans that could join him.

I think you'll find that these imagined hypocrites of yours are multiple different people. This may shock you but "GAF" isn't one person but a number of unique users with differing opinions.

In any case you would be hard pressed to find a PC user here who cares about the retail sales of console exclusives relative to other console exclusives, most active PC users here only really care about a particular console getting to the right pricepoint/number of exclusive games for them to justify buying it in addition to their PC. For that reason PC users are overwhelmingly more likely to buy a Sony or Nintendo system this generation.

But yeah, salty PC owners am I right?

None of these people care about the business side. They just want all the games on the system they play. How they get there is Sony's problem, no matter how illogical.

You seems short-sighted in business perspective (even in the practical). What are we talking here is bigger than the sales, but giving away Sony ecosystem (which mainly centered around hardware) to the other competitor.

I'm arguing the ecosystem is a means-to-an-end - much like MS have done with XBox and Winstore.

Now, yeah, there's reasons against my point of view. But there's also reasons for it (imho).

You do realize these exclusives are meant to incentivize the purchase of the console. This console purchase leads to the purchase of more games which provides the maker with licencing revenue. How will releasing on PC account for the distortion to this business model? Console makers make money on licensing. Having great exclusives is for ecosystem building

PS1, PS2, and PSP aren't necessary cuz of emulation though.

PS3 maybe in a couple years. Its emulator is making slow but steady progress.
