Mighty No. 9 review thread

I like how Mighty No. 9 as a character looks better in these comics than the final game.

Wow, tough one for backers - what a disappointment. :(

I was looking forward to trying this out... but just like Mega Man, Maybe Mighty No. 9 2 will be better?
Well if this doesn't sell well enough and the TV show doesn't take off, Might No. 9 2 may need some help to get off the ground. Kickstarter?

Also, while I'm not surprised to see that element employed here: finite lives are a terrible, worthless relic of an earlier era in gaming and serve no purpose except to artificially increase difficulty and thus playtime. They have no place in a game releasing in 2016.

I hate seeing this statement so much.

Guys, I'm at work, I'm laughing and I can't find a way to explain to my co-workers these comics.

This is a greek tragedy, can't stop laughing.

The Mighty No. 9 video game might just be like the Batman and Robin movie, an entertainment product created purely to sell merchandise and cross promote other products. In this case, this outsourced, and largely unrefined, game was likely made to gain quick profit off of and promote the animation entertainment products and sell future merchandise.

Just like Red Ash, Inafune's vision and dream was not creating a new game title for fans, but leveraging fan nostalgia to market a cross medium franchise that he could 1. Outsource and 2. make continuous profit from.

I stated that poorly. I meant MN9 was managed poorly after the initial Kickstarter, not Bloodstained.

I am extremely happy with Bloodstained and how they keep us in the loop on everything. The game looks great so far as well.

Bloodstained does look like it's progressing nicely with its steady release of information when it's ready. We already know what the game actually looks like and backers were even asked for input on what shading/art style they preferred.

It doesn't feel like a scam at all.

I guess this is another cautionary tale of using Kickstarter to fund game projects. The timing of the project and animosity towards Capcom for apparently abandoning the Mega Man franchise is probably what fueled Mighty No. 9 to the levels it did. Take out Inafune or lapse more time between Legends 3 cancellation and this probably wouldn't have taken off. It's 20/20. Not saying there aren't a ton of other circumstances. Games like Shovel Knight have raised the bar for sure. Following this the last three years has been an interesting ride.

Capcpom is our only hope now.

oh how the tables have turned.

Bloodstained looks a gazillion times better than this does. I guess that's the difference between a creator that low-key holds his audience in contempt and wants to nickel and dime versus a game that is pretty much a passion project for the respective creator.

I backed this... and have no regrets. From the reviews, it's mediocre. Oh well, not bad, but not good. Will MN9 form the base of a stellar new legacy for years to come? Nah, it's probably dead in the water. Regardless, I've backed Shovel Knight, Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero and Bloodstained. No way will MN9 define my experience on Kickstarter.

To everyone knocking crowdfunding:

Don't.

Instead - focus your efforts on the following:

Read KS pitch. Look at asking price. Read developer name. Completely ignore the relation between what was promised and what was asked in favor of someone's name.

That's the heart of the problem. There were so many red flags I don't even know where to begin. It's not the fault of KS the blatantly obvious was missed thanks to donning a pair of blinders based on someone's name. I don't like talking shit about another dev but it's not KS fault in the slightest.

Don't back campaigns that scream "we don't know what we are doing". You'll be better off.

I don't seem to recall too many red flags during the period where the KS was live. It was a pretty well managed funding campaign if anything. Fans expectations where way too high but in terms of actual realistic expectations the developers gave the impression that they knew what they were doing and would be able to deliver. Only later did the problems start becoming more visible.

There's no way that Skullgirls number is correct. Was that the amount that they got for the Indiegogo campaign? That was for 1 character (that ended up becoming 6 characters).

He didn't make anything, dude. I don't need to post the Kamiya quote again, do I?

All he ever was was just an artist who later became a producer for Capcom. He never created Mega Man or did anything with its game design.

I don't think that's completely true, he did some design work on some games from 3 on and advised on later games.

His influence the games seems to be massively exaggerated though.

If anything, the game had an unrealistic scope from the get go. Remember how dashing through enemies was meant to give you transformations as opposed to meager power ups like a piercing shot or a speed buff? Because I do.

I don't but I'll take your word for it. Regardless Inafune is the industry vet, he should know what he's doing.

Looking at those pictures, we should have given Shovel Knight more money...

And yet they're still delivering on their promises of DLC campaigns, gender swap, battle mode, etc. AND they're giving me them away for free to non-backers as well.

Yacht Club Games are the absolute best.

I was really down that I missed the Kickstarter for this but it didn't take long before I was pleased that I missed it. For me at least, it's looked suspect for quite some time so I'm not that surprised by the low scores.

It's probably going to end up in a PSN sale for almost nothing at some point so it ispossible that I'll give it a go then.

If backers ever get their codes I'm sure that there will be a ton on eBay/GAF of people trying to make back at least a small portion of their investment.

Much like an anime fan on prom night, I would rather be at home playing Mega Man than here. I would rather be playing Shovel Knight. I would rather be playing most games in this genre.

Amazing. And the DLC talk is pretty offputting.

Found it!

That was a fun ride, sifting through numerous threads from ages ago with titles like "the game is basically done", "no more delays", "new delay", etc

I know it's mean and hindsight is 50/50 but the first couple of pages in that thread are cracking me up harder than they should. All those broken dreams and people being fooled by the concept art lmao

I always assumed the problem wasn't that Mighty No. 9 was bad, but that it sort of missed the point of classic Mega Man. It seemed to be reaching for something like X or Zero (which, full disclosure, are series I felt like had higher highs than the main series) than the original stuff.

But it seems to be that the game is actually bad.

I would certainly change part of this now, but I feel pretty okay with my contribution to this thread.

Guys, I backed and think it should be funded, but everyone bugging their eyes out at the picture being posted repeatedly should note the caption on the page:

Note: All images on this page are concept art and not actual in-game screens.
