Do you like the name "NX" or do you think Nintendo should change it?

I actually really like NX, but it's never going to happen. I think I saw a huge post on here that listed all the different products and services that already use the name partially or fully, and Nintendo wouldn't want their product to get diluted by that.

For example, the Lexus NX.

Also, the DS codename wasn't DS, it was Nitro.

NX is not going to be the name. It doesn't convey anything about the concept of the console (whatever that ends up being); it's essentially a null value in place of a brand. It has no meaning and little marketability.

It might have some appeal for teenage gamers because it has an X in it and X is, like, the most hardcore letter, or merely because we've been referring to the console by that moniker for so long now and have grown attached to it, but that's about it.

NX is a code name, just like Revolution, Dolphin, and Project Reality. It'll change.

Nintendo says that the Wii brand will not be used and there still people that think it will be. Oh, boy...

I believe in "Nintendo Cross"

I don't see them sticking with "NX," using the Wii brand or repeating the name of any other previous Nintendo consoles. "Nintendo Go" sounds a lot like something they would work with, however. It makes sense for several reasons: it sounds catchy; the obvious association with "Pokemon Go;" it describes the primary function of the console clearly; and it leads with a prominent "Nintendo," which will be in the public consciousness during launch because of the recently released NES Classic Edition.

I like it:

commercial/trailer/reveal:

NINTENDO'S NEXT CONSOLE (or whatever they want to categorize it)

Kirby shows up, sucks away the E

NINTENDO'S NXT CONSOLE

Link comes in and boomerang/hookshots the 's out of the way

NINTENDO NXT CONSOLE

Cpt Falcon PUNCHES away "CONSOLE"

NINTENDO NXT

Mario stomps the T

NINTENDO NX

yay!

Nintendo Go makes a ton of sense given the concept and Pokemon Go buzz.

Nintendo Go is just meant to be.
In the highly unlikely scenario they stick with NX I would be OK as well.
No Wii like names please.

I like the idea of The Nintendo Portal.

Similar to "portable" but encompasses more than just that, hinting at the device's ability to lead to myriad types of gaming experiences, both short and long-term.

Plus, Portal sounds like a service, and could easily brand the new infrastructure, whatever it might be.

Do you all feel like "NX" has been more in the public's eye than previous codenames? Since social media is such a standard means of getting news now on all sorts of different topics, the name "NX" has been out there more openly than I feel previous codenames. So much so, that I feel like people would be confused if Nintendo changed the name.

Nintendo Go could be great, but they'll piss a whole lot of people off if they don't have some kind Pokemon Go type tie in game or similar feature built in to it. Cause otherwise it's a just a huge cocktease.

Anything but Nintendo GO. Sony ruined that GO name for hardware.

I'm pretty sure so few people actually even heart of the PSP Go that it won't really matter how bad a trainwreck that was. Plus Pokemon Go is pretty much the biggest thing out there now so it's intimately tied to Nintendo in the public eye.

Pretty sure NX is now where near as universally recognized as Revolution was.

Considering Nintendo is on a roll with weird derivative names that confuse a lot of people less in the know nowadays, they'd probably be better off just staying with the NX.

Though on the other hand I doubt Nintendo will re-use the DS/3DS or especially the Wii branding for the upcoming system.

Personally I think the name NX is fine, if not a little vague.

Not really. I guarantee you the NX name is not that widely known outside the gaming circle, even though it might seem that way.

Nope. The codename for 3DS was Century or something involving the letters CTR.
The codename for Wii U was Project Cafe.

I tend to consider whatever translates to the final model abbreviation to be the canonical code name.

Dolphin - DOL
Revolution - RVL
Nitro - NTR
Wii U Project - WUP

I think it sounds cool, but where it's always been obvious it's just a codename, I've never had it in my mind that it'd be called that so I've been looking forward to the actual name.

Man, Revolution was such a good name.

Dolphin was pretty slick too.

And Project Cafe wasn't great, but was miles better than the actual name. >_<

I dunno, doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence for the NX's final name, but let's hope the trend is "broken" with this one.

Yeah and I feel like it's been the NX forever, this thread for example is 8 months old, and if they're going to go with a new name they only have 6 months to market it

I'm not saying they'll keep it, but "Nintendo NX" has a very good chance of being better than whatever they think up

Also "Nintendo Go" is an awful name, and Pokémon Go might well be all but dead in a month, let alone 6 months, so it's a bit silly to bank on it like some people here are suggesting

Edit: Anyone who seriously wants them to keep Wii in the name has lost their mind

Nintendo should change it, NX is not evocative of anything. I don't particularly dislike it, but I don't think it's a good name.

I feel it would be too easily confused with the Xbox brand. I like the mentioned Nintendo Cross and Nintendo Fusion.

Bringing back Nintendo Revolution would be fantastic as well.

I like the NX name, but I seriously doubt Nintendo will go with it.

I do hope they completely distance themselves from the Wii name though.

I think it's a great, clean name that describes the concept (Nintendo across multiple platforms) and they should keep it

but they'll probably end up calling it New Wii U+
The Wii U name should be dead and buried. Never to be used again. Nintendo should want to disassociate themselves from it.

Was going to mention this as well.

I think the one lesson they should learn from WiiU is don't allow any possibility for people to confuse it with something else.

Well after the Wii U they showed they hadn't learnt that lesson by releasing a 2DS and a New 3DS

3DS: plays 3DS and DS games, but not all 3DS games
2DS: plays 3DS and DS games, but not some 3DS games (there are no 2DS games)
New 3DS: plays DS and 3DS games, with some 3DS games performing better
DS: just plays DS games

Nice and simple
