NX will only be good for Nintendo fans if their variety increases. They need to stop releasing so many platformers and party games. Wii U's first 6 months was basically just that from Nintendo.
Yeah, one would hope the poor sales of a lot of those titles, and the huge success of Splatoon and Mario Maker, would show them they need to move away from so many of those quicker "hope to cash in with our IP" type games.
They're development teams are less strained now that they've adapted to HD development, reorganized and streamlined, and won't be split and spread thin supporting two platforms anymore.
That should lead to more mainline entries in key franchises (both current and lapsed franchises like Metroid) as well as more leeway to take chances with new ideas and new IP like Splatoon.
Only time will tell though.
As mentioned earlier, why should Nintendo even bother with porting Mario Kart 8 & Splatoon? I've already made my case about Mario Kart 8 (which Retro4ever quoted a few posts above this one). As for Splatoon, maybe a port for that game may have made sense if they were still doing Splatfests. But now that the Splatfests are over, there's no real reason to port the game when Nintendo could start fresh with a sequel. Plus they're gonna have to overhaul the controls anyway thanks to the lack of a second screen.
Agreed. Splatoon and MK8 don't need remakes/ports. Those came out a while ago and they should be able to get sequels out in the next year or two. The sequels can include the best/most popular maps and tracks from those games.
Mario Maker needs brought over somehow though as that game has a ton of a appeal and infinite replayability. So that should get ported over at/near launch if they can work out the controls for building (be it only in portable mode, or also having a second screen app for tablets/phones etc.).
Smash should get ported as well. With Sakurai being burned out they probably can't get a sequel out in a timely manner. But they could do a port, and probably have others on the team add a new character or two (ice climbers for one since they were largely done but couldn't run on 3DS) for launch and then just do bigger DLC down the road.
Those along with the New Zelda, Pikmin 4 etc. has the makings of a good launch window lineup. Then they can have new 3D Mario, Splatoon sequel, MK9, Metroid Prime 4 etc. etc. later on to keep the momentum rolling the first couple of years along with all their smaller franchises and new ideas.
