No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

Wow, I'm just noticing how truly horrible the FoV is on the PS4 version. Hopefully that gets improved at some point.

I am getting the game but there is no need to dismiss someones opinion just because it doesnt align with your excitement. All of Jims complaints sound valid. He didnt seem to dislike it either. Sounds like he thought his time with it is "ok".

Personally, if the game can hook me more than 20 hours that's fine for 60$ and with the added fact that this game offers a very unique experience longevity is not a deal breaker for me.

Looks like Jim isn't too impressed.

To be fair, he says if you dont go in expecting the moon, and expect a survival, crafting, item management choose your own adventure game, then you will be "fine" with it.

He just doesn't appear over impressed, yes. But what he described is exactly what I am expecting.

He confirms what I feared when I saw all of the early streaming videos. None of this looks particularly interesting, even if you get past the very, very rough graphics.

Tons of positive reviews, and you come away with that ... Ever heard of confirmation bias? The fact is, you decided what you would think about the game before it released, now you are seeking out sources to confirm your beliefs -- all with never having played the game.

sounds like the same thing is happening with you

pc version got delayed by a little bit

and now the reviews are delayed by a little bit

I'm going to drink some pepto bismol now

If Jim Stearling likes a game in excited about: awesome! He's one of the best reviewers out there!

If he doesn't like a game I'm excited about: God, he's jaded...
He's jaded as much as he is passionate about what he is excited for. His opinions don't ever come into play when deciding to purchase a game.

fixed link for this, sorry about that!

Are you serious?

If you read the piece, I specifically talk about how I didn't take in too much about the game beyond its announcement so I could go in relatively fresh. It wasn't what I expected from what was shown when announced and at E3. Not being what I expected isn't bad, however! I'm still adjusting to it.

no it's just that his opinion doesn't hold much weight for me, it's all over the place. he likes destiny warriors, which I like also, but then he "doesn't get" EDF and doesn't like it, while saying that he thinks that he should like it based on his like of similar games, so he is all over the place.

also I never once said he's one of the best reviewers... far from it.

Summary: He is surprised it is a survival game, and wasn't expecting that.
That's a good summary if you didn't read past the first few paragraphs. For the people who are gonna react to your post specifically instead of reading the impressions.

The biggest shift in expectations I’ve had to get used to in No Man’s Sky is simply regarding what genre it slots into. In the initial heady trailers and demos that I saw, my mind went wild imagining the joy of simply exploring a universe — wandering around, flying from planet to planet without a care and so on. I didn’t follow interviews with Hello Games closely, because I didn’t want to spoil much, but this was the tone the game seemed to be giving off in the little I did see.

Context is key.

Surprised you didn't bring up his COD: MW3 or Mario Kart 8 review. That's the go to pair if you want to dismiss his opinion.

I was actually going to follow up with a, "maybe he went in, in the dark"... But you just confirmed it.

Fair enough then if you were mostly on blackout.

I've tried asking this a few times and nobody has answered it, how is the aiming int his game?

Is it like Destiny? Smooth and easy? Or is it like Killzone 2 was on PS3, aka slow and super delayed, like you're aiming on ice?

I am extremely worried that it's the latter.

yea, main thing I want to be clear is that it not being what I expected isn't a bad thing. I've got some problems with what it is so far but trying to keep an open mind and see where it shapes up as I progress. Enjoying it more the further I get

I feel like the aiming isn't great, tho to be clear I've barely done any shooty stuff so far. Mostly just mining.

Did you even read it lol

Lol, Did you? I read the whole thing. The title was about how the game wasn't what he was expecting, he thought it was an exploration game where you could aimlessly go where you want and do what you want, but in the end, this is a survival game.

That was a Summary, yes. And the reasons he wasn't expecting that, was because he said he didn't follow the game or interviews much before release.

What am I missing really? The title was about This Wasn't The Game I was Expecting, and the reason was he was expecting a little more than a survival game, maybe more freedom. So as a Summary, I think that sums it up.

Pretty sure the point is to not try to summarize reviews with one sentence as a sort of gotcha. Especially if that one sentence doesn't include some incredibly pertinent context, like the reviewer going in blind. When you leave out context you discourage people from actually reading the review and instead encourage them to respond specifically to your post with a "lol," "wow," or "really?"

Count me in as someone else who hasn't been following the game super closely and thought it was much more exploration than survival/crafting. For what that's worth.

Where were you when many GAFfers were gushing, defending, reviewing, and building up the game before they even played it?

Confirmation bias is a two way street.

Damn Jim Sterling is not impressed at all by this game. Based on his impression it's sounds like just another one of those millions up millions survival indie game out on steam right now. Only a much much larger scale. I haven't played the game but so i can judge it yet. But Jim Sterling sure makes it sound like a boring game.
