My suspicion now is that if you weren't connected to the network when you uploaded the discovery it's gone forever, and you can never find it. If that's the case it almost makes me want to stop playing and throw the disc in the trash. I REALLY think that sucks if true.
I always thought that you have to activate that big beacon (one that beams into outer space) to actually save all your discoveries onto the main server, and that all those smaller "uploads" that you do in the options menu are just there to give you money and get uploaded locally.
I have absolutely no explanation why I thought that, it just seemed logical to me.

Found a planet absolutely riddled with Vortex Cubes. I called it Vortex Cube Central for anyone who may come upon it. My plan is to just farm it till I get bored, all the while upgrading my exosuit inventory space with the funds I accrue from selling them, which in turn will increase how much I profit.

Love this game.

What are vortex cubes? I haven't seen any yet.

I took a photo like this from a farther-out planet last night, except mine was 4 in a row. Are all planets lined up like this in every star system? It seemed very.... non solar systemy when I saw it. I know the art director wanted everything close together, but it looks pretty odd from space.

Also, is it possible to reach a star?

I've never tried to reach a star myself, but no, the planets are definitely not all that close together in every star system. None of the planets in the system will be on the opposite side of the local star or anything, though.

Are there planets without sentinels?
Yes for sure. There are also planets with very chill sentinels (ones that didn't really bug me even after hunting big game), and I've heard about planets with perma-aggro ones all over the place too. Seems to be a fair amount of variation. When you first discover a planet, the message that pops up gives you a one-word read on the type of sentinels to expect there.

Kinda unrelated, but I'm just remembering now that I've heard a lot of people complaining about getting aggro while mining. You can just run and hide for a sec to drop aggro very easily. There's actually a little stealth system so it's very obvious when you can be seen and where they are looking.

just started the game. Does it still have the cool underwater stuff and the giant creatures seen in the early trailers? I haven't seen water at all on my planet, or any of the game plays I've seen. Also, if the planets are planet-sized, are there different eco-systems on a single planet or is it pretty much one environment looped?

I love reading stuff like that.

And nope, everyone's different.

I'm excited to see what mine will be tomorrow. On one hand, I want it to be hellish so escaping will feel satisfying, but on the other, a peaceful planet will be a good way to get a handle on the mechanics

Trust me you dont want a planet with a hostile environment. Even 15 hours in, I fear those planets even when I have a protective layer. I end up lurking around my ship and bases lol.

I have been to a planet filled with hostile sentinels that attack on site. I had to utilize the stealth mechanic quite a bit on that planet.

The planet that I used as a reference in my HUD guide was a hellscape. A literal hellscape. Aggressive sentinels. Hostile fauna. Firestorm within seconds of landing. The temperature went from 116 to 390 in a relatively short time.

It was only when I tried to leave I realized that I need more plutonium, so I actually needed to walk around this fresh hell. When I finally left, I was on my last health node.

Never again.

Yes to both! On a water planet I was on, I saw a gigantic leech like creature that was hostile towards me. There was only one in the water, but damn if it wasnt disgusting. It was about 10 feet long and 5 feet wide, it was grooossss

I have it on Steam and I've been waffling a about refunding it every hour. On the one hand, I loved the survival aspects of Minecraft, not so much the building, but the exploration and sense of discovery. I loved mining for obsidian and making a hellgate. I loved finding a natural cave, throwing up a wall and door, and picking a direction and mining. The feeling of finding a dungeon while mining is still on my "top gaming experiences of all time" list.

I could never get into stuff like Starbound or Terraria, but absolutely love The Long Dark. I loved Starflight 1 and 2, Freelancer, and the bit I've played of Elite Dangerous.

On the other hand, I'm really sensitive of others' opinions. So I'm feeling some uncertainty about buying given the huge backlash at the moment.

Does this sound like it's up my alley? I mean, I think so, but all the backlash is giving me serious cold feet.

Question. I got to the second planet last night, and I'm looking for the distress beacon. It says it's like 12 hours away on foot, and when I try to fly there I got it down to 30 minutes but it kept going up. Is there some trick to getting to it?
Heyyy. I'm not sure quite what situation you're referring to, but fly back out to orbit, get much closer to it (you can do quick pulse jumps) before even entering the atmosphere. .
Is there a way to see all of the blueprints you've collected if there are no vacant slots in your tool/suit/ship?
Nope, go sell stuff. lol

jesus, i just had this weird moment, where i was looking at the star map, deciding where to jump next (i'm one system away from my 'home' system) and i had this weird feeling that i woulnd't ever see my "home planet" anymore.

i'm legit sad right now, because i know i have to move forward in this journey, and there is really no point looking back... still ... :( :(
My dog passed away Sunday and I named my home planet after her. It was by far the most lush in the system so I spent a lot of time there. I got this same exact feeling as I was about to make my second warp.

Is it a bad idea to stay on a single visually appealing planet and just keep exploring it? I've been several planets and then finally jumped to another system but all the stuff has been pretty much the same so I'm not seeing the point of going to every planet on my way. I even seem to be able to speak to the same alien over and over to get new stuff and the planet I'm currently on has little bases all over the place.

It's a bit mind-numbing just exploring and getting similar stuff over and over again but getting suit upgrades is at least exciting but I can do that on my current planet where I have lots of progress already.

Unfortunately you have to dismantle the upgrade(R3) and rebuild it.

Wow that's a weird design choice but at least now I know, thanks!

It's probably not on that planet. Look up when you're flying "toward" it.

Can I go wiping out Ancient Civilizations in NMS?

No, would be awesome but I think in this game we shouldn't assume that we (protagonist) are "human," but rather a passive species just beginning to explore the cosmos.

So far I've been to a couple toxic worlds, an extremely cold world, one world that had lakes (pretty cool) and one world that had radiation. And a space port. I am really enjoying my time in the game, even if I feel like I'm still at the grinding for basic stuff stage. What I do feel is missing (besides actual civilizations and the ability to build structures) is stuff like volcanism and random asteroid impacts. As far as single player immersion those kind of stand out to me from a cosmic slant.

Does anyone know if there's any (legit) sites selling NMS for PC at a pre-launch discount? This has probably been asked a lot but there's too many pages to go through and having no luck searching elsewhere online. Watching a few streams got me interested in it more than I expected.

A lot of this game is mining. You may be selling more than your crafting though. Especially early on when your inventory system is limited. Exploration and getting lost in underground caves is something you can definitely find here as well.

Good to know some are more spread out. Unfortunate that they don't seem to be spread out realistically though (opposite sides of stars). I remember reading that Sean and Grant had heated arguments over the planet placement. I think I'm on Sean's side. Why didn't they just put moons on more planets so we get the nice skies from the ground? Does the game actually consider "moon" as a separate object type? Or is everything a planet no matter the size.

Yeah, the Sentinels rating is super important for knowing how far to push your activities. I think they may care about certain things more than others too. They always seem to get upset with plutonium crystal mining, but I was mining a pillar of Heredium last night and a drone floated right up to me and just turned away like it ain't no thing. And it wasn't a particularly passive rating planet.

If you love discovery, then this game is for you. If you love to explore various locales, then its for you.

My favorite parts in minecraft too was finding huge cave networks to explore, nd I adore NMS.

Is it just me or are the ships incredibly slow with the basic, R2 movement? I feel like I'm barely moving when I'm not using the hyper speed (o) or pulse speed (L1 and R1)

Only still on the first planet, trying not to read any posts in this thread. Have some questions though.

I did a number patter decipher at a settlement, got a distress beacon waypoint for a crashed ship. Tried to get to it. My planet had high temperatures, so I needed to take caves when possible to normalize my temperature. Stumbled into a big cavern system, wouldnt let me continue in the direction of the waypoint, got turned around/lost in the caves, no exits anywhere, finally made it out after probably an hour, and now the waypoint is gone. Going back to the terminal where I picked up the signal, and I cant do anything there. I got my ship fixed, is the only option now just flying around the planet until the waypoint pops up again? If it is still there, would it be a question mark icon now?

So, bad news, I guess I did the dlc bug. I've played for like 6 hours. I'm four star systems in. I sold my dlc ship for another ship, not realizing it doesn't have a hyper drive. I have no hyperdrive blueprint. Is there anything I can do? The system I'm in has two planets, so I'm slowly scouring them for a blueprint, but so far no luck. Help!

Hey guys, the internet has a lot of conflicting info on this. Any idea?

I think R2 is supposed to be slow. Local travel. I am using O to move around a planet and L1 and R1 to get around a solar system.

As someone who loved ONLY this in Minecraft and who still has a huge love affair with The Long Dark, I think I'm back on board.

Left hand side HUD display tells you the speed. Those three modes have huge differences.

R2 still beats walking all over the planet.

Yeah, R2 when flying feels like it almost does nothing. Definitely needs more of a punch. There's a big gap in velocity from normal cruise speed to boost speed. But maybe different ships have different flight characteristics?

It took me awhile to realize it's nighttime with the sun out.

Don't get hung up on it. Chances are the waypoint was one of several thousand that exist on each planet.

It does sound like it's up your alley.... though I should mention I find it very difficult to relate to the angle you're approaching it from. I couldn't possibly care less that there's a "backlash" of any sort occurring- it has no actual impact on my experience playing the game. I'm worried because I want to be like "you'll love it" but I don't want you taking my word as gospel. Your opinion is the only one that will actually matter in the end. ;) You've watched videos and streams and stuff?

Not touching the review thread. A bit shocked at the reviews but makes sense. The pitfalls of this game are obvious, it's up to you if you mind that or not.

But I am having an absolute blast and I hope review scores don't discourage too many people.

Yeah. I recommend staying out of the impressions thread because...some of the stuff is so pessimistic. NMS is not perfect by any means, but it does what it sets out to do-offer a galaxy of worlds to explore.

How much better can your scanner get?

Feels like it doesn't detect anything beyond a small distance, and the icons highlighting everything disappear after not too long. Also feel like it is hard to tell which flora/fauna you have discovered vs. not.

Also flying around close to the surface, I can't scan for shit. Doesn't help that it is difficult to look at what you are flying over due to the cockpit shape/camera control.

1. You haven't booted it up on steam yet. You have two hours before refund is locked. Why not try it for an hour tomorrow?

2. This game is like minecraft in an infinite, way more immersive and pretty universe, without the building - which you said is your last favourite aspect. Why wouldn't you like it? Honestly this sounds like your perfect game

What sort of backlash is happening? I'm pretty much only in this thread and the game just seems like a straight 8-9/10 .

Scanning from your ship while within a planet's atmosphere seems pretty pointless to me so far. Scanning from the ground though is pretty awesome. I have a +3 range attached to my analyzer and scanner and I can see shit pretty far away.

A 70 average isn't a bad game.
