As someone who loved ONLY this in Minecraft and who still has a huge love affair with The Long Dark, I think I'm back on board.
If you love discovery, then this game is for you. If you love to explore various locales, then its for you.

My favorite parts in minecraft too was finding huge cave networks to explore, nd I adore NMS.
Yeah, mainly why I'm so excited. I guess some people just don't get that appeal in exploration, but that was my favorite thing in Minecraft. Didn't care about building or crafting or multiplayer or farming. The best thing was just setting off in a direction and seeing what's out there. Finding a cave network, planning your descent (need materials for outposts, torches, sand to cushion landings on big drops, weapons, etc.), and then just exploring below. Seeing some massive ravine or overhang was thrilling

I walking across Skyrim, RDR, GTA V. People-watching at a slow stroll is one of my favorite things to do in GTA

So yeah, I'm very excited about NMS

1) How deep do they go?

2) Are there multi-layered ones like Minecraft? Big caverns or mostly tunnels?

3) Do they get dark?
 
How much better can your scanner get?

Feels like it doesn't detect anything beyond a small distance, and the icons highlighting everything disappear after not too long. Also feel like it is hard to tell which flora/fauna you have discovered vs. not.

Also flying around close to the surface, I can't scan for shit. Doesn't help that it is difficult to look at what you are flying over due to the cockpit shape/camera control.

I missed the prompt, and you might have to, that you can click R3 when scanning to zoom in if you have the right upgrade. It helps a TON with those birds and shit, I use the x3 zoom.
 
Is it just me or are the ships incredibly slow with the basic, R2 movement? I feel like I'm barely moving when I'm not using the hyper speed (o) or pulse speed (L1 and R1)
Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is.

The way I look at it is, the basic engine is for use on the scale of meters. The Circle boost is for kilometers. Pulse Jumping is for hundreds of thousands of kilometers, and hyperdrive is for light-years.

The regular R2 is useful for positioning for a landing and I use it a lot while mining in space.

*shudders to get all the metric off*
 
Man I can't wait to hear about PC version differences.

If there is less pop-in and smoother movement, 1440p support and uncapped frame rate, I might just have to double dip.
 
It's tricky because without the waypoint it erased the link from your current to previous system; the best you can do is go into the free select mode and rotate around because the perspective may not be where it was before when you originally jumped to that system. I was able to go from my second system back to the first, so it's definitely possible.

I just don't understand why I can't even find my previous system. The jump wasn't long, unless the game doesn't represent the scale properly.
 
Scanning from your ship while within a planet's atmosphere seems pretty pointless to me so far. Scanning from the ground though is pretty awesome. I have a +3 range attached to my analyzer and scanner and I can see shit pretty far away.

Maybe it just seems like they were trying to balance how many icons are on the screen at once, because I can tell from a distance what a rock/plant is made of, but it doesn't have an icon on it until I'm very close/looking right at it. That just gives me the sense that my scanner isn't working well.

Flying around, and looking for interesting stuff though is much harder.
 
Huh so I found a strange monolith that
offered to teleport me "home". I chose to resist the temptation and it taught me an Atlas word. Anyone knows what happens if you go accept?

In my experience, they don't go very deep and are not multi-layered. They do get darker in the case there are no 'light emitting flora' (which is very rare).

1)they can go pretty deep. The networks are huge(I should know, I glitched through the ground once and saw an entire expanse..When I get home Ill upload the picture)

2.)Ive seen caverns here and there, yes to see a super big one tho

3.)here and there Ive seen dark caves. One time I was lost, so I just blee my way through a cave by just shooting grenades at a wall to create an exit lol. I havent been into a cave at night so I dunno how dark it could really get

Played the game last night with my wife. After two-hours with the game, I came to the conclusion that this game represents a paradigm shift in game design (like Super Mario Bros, Metriod, Street Fighter 2, Grand Theft Auto, etc.). Hello Games has laid the foundation for all future game designers. They will borrow from this game when creating their own open-space exploration game.

Amazing at what Hello Games have accomplished. For me, its almost like trying to comprehend how God existed before anything was created. My finite mind lacks the capacity to grasp what is being said with such a statement. In a similar manner, this is how I felt last night traveling the universe before me as we explored it together. A technical accomplishment that will be forever remembered in the halls of gaming history. ^_^
 
Is the punch-jetpack boost thing a glitch or intentional? If it is a glitch, they better not remove it. Not only does it make it so much less tedious to get around and cover more ground away from your ship (and get back!)... it's super fun too and makes me feel like a bad ass.

I really want to play more but I've already put like 12 hours into the PS4 version and I don't want to get too far ahead since I'll be restarting tomorrow on PC anyway.

The game is great, but I think you're being a bit too hyperbolic. The game takes *a lot* of influence from other pre-existing games, so saying that it's a paradigm shift doesn't make much sense.
 
I think you need 5. It needs this alien met thing on lvl 3. You can check pressing options

I've met at least 30 aliens at this point, and I'm still not getting an anomaly. I have gotten two Atlas stations, and no anomalies. Now I'm getting nervous again.

Yeah, exploring is a big hook for me in this game also, which may explain why I'm still in my starting system after 10 hours. I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions, and also a bit envious of all the PC players who will get to experience the game at 60fps.

Caves... I haven't gone very deep in them yet because I didn't want to get jumped by a Balrog or something, but I have seen some big caverns, maybe 50 feet high? I'm sure there's bigger than that. I haven't seen any that are very dark, but then again those glowy plants are everywhere down there, probably too much IMO.

Not very deep. Most of the caves I've been are only a few feet deeper than the crust.

Mostly tunnels.

Not dark enough that I've ever had to use my light/torch. They've all been about the same level of darkness.

I would say its a physics based bug, but I doubt itll be fixed because its a benign one.

Also your multitool shakes alot when you do it, as if they programmed your multitool to shake that much when going fast. So maybe intentional?

It does for me. Its very much like Super Mario Bros in that it wasn't the first platformer every created, but it was the first platformer that created the foundation for all platformers because of the brilliant game design.
 
Found this beautiful, lush planet with forests of greens and reds giving way to orange rock formations. There was just one drawback: freaking dozens of messed up spider-crab creatures and some evil monstrosity that looked part-gazelle, part-octopus, both creatures were hostile and both appeared in huge numbers. Never seen that many hostile enemies in one place before - landed my ship and got mobbed by about six of the spider-crab things, while bringing up the scanner showed dozens and dozens more dotted all over.
 
Sucks that I'm once again exposed to bugs that make me not want to keep playing, in a game I've been super looking forward to. The same happened with TW3 (which was pretty broken at release), and I haven't finished that to this day. Seems like the same is happening with this. I've been looking forward to this more than anything ever since it was revealed, and now its broken state has made me not want to bother anymore. :(

Do system scans when you first enter a system and every time you leave a planet or space station. I was dicking around in a system for 3 hours when one suddenly appeared after leaving a planet and doing a scan in space.

I don't know if it was intended or not but I like to think so, and it cannot be removed. I consider it a basic feature of NMS at this point and I would simply stop playing the game. It's the best.

It sucks that you can't backtrack for whatever reason, but I wouldn't let that stop you from playing. The point is to move forward anyway, so I say keep pressing on!

I'm weird in that way. OCD, you might say (and you'd probably be right). Once I notice something is completely broken that kills my enjoyment of the whole thing.

Depending on the species they can have different reactions, so I'm looking forward to doing this extensively on my explorer playthrough on PC.

Thus far I've only tried it once, made a little squirrel-goat happy. Then I killed him. He shouldn't have trusted me.
 
I've been exploring my system, have learned around 20+ words in the language of the local aliens, called the Gek. Basically they're these frog things that apparently smell great (!). I don't know how everyone else got the antimatter required for their warp drive initially but after getting to a certain level of standing with the Gek and visiting a space station, I received a transmission, followed it and found a Gek in an outpost, who gifted me the antimatter.

In the dialogue I learn that there are two of these Gek guys who have specifically provided the anti-matter, and they have names (one of them is called Marco, I forget the other). The dialogue suggested I now have the ability to find them, which I want to, but can't find anything in my menu or HUD to follow up on this.

Any ideas?

I was going to build a few bypass chips and search for transmissions at outposts but I'm a bit lost really. Would rather try and find these guys than zoom off with my hyperdrive and forget about them to be honest.
 
A 70 average isn't a bad game.

Eh, we all know a 70 is the lower end of the spectrum. I guess it's just weird, I felt like I have experienced almost none of this game 7 hours in. I can't imagine formulating a opinion or score of it unless I rushed thru it, which is what it seems like the reviewers must have done.

But whatever, this isn't the review thread and I don't want to turn it into one. Just my thoughts is that I think some are a little harsh. Not that I particularly disagree with some of the points, I can see the holes in the game too, but again I've experienced so little that it's hard to fathom "oh yeah, this game is a 70."
