No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

Saying this as someone who hasn't played it yet, but repetition is to be expected. With 18 quintillion planets, you are going to have at the same time the most variety ever in a game and the most repetition, all at the same time. Millions of planets will be nigh identical aside from small variables, while some will be worlds apart. Nature of the sheer numbers. This is what makes it awesome IMO. Mimics our our universe, and makes you contemplate just how NOT unique Earth probably is in reality.

The earth is very unique in reality.

Definitely in the camp right now where I need something exciting to happen.

Biggest danger for me is that I'm losing the excitement of the sense of discovery. I'm doubting that anything I can see on planets is actually worth seeing, and seem to be stuck in a rut where I'm basically grinding for the materials I need to just hop it to the next system.

I just want to find a world that's got more to it than the occassional monolith or outpost, with variant weather on a mostly dead rock.

Unfortunately that's really all the game seems to be right now.

I do not own the game yet, I am still thinking to buy it or not. I am kind of afraid that all the planets will feel the same after played 5 hours.

Is is possible to see cities (or at least villages) with Aliens on a planet? Or is it only fauna and 'animals'?

Enjoying the game but i think it would have been a lot better if some planets were just devoid of life and some were just liquid planets (like on interstellar).

Also if one in every couple million had intelligent life with whole cities that would be incredible (although understandably hard to do).

The game is a good start by hello games but there is so much room for improvement that i hope they consider making a sequel

they did show some techniques on generating cities, maybe it can be a thing in the future, but why would they do that to themselves? the shitstorm over mp would be repeated if someone couldn't go into every building in a city (even though the procedural generating just makes block look city like)..

It won't be long before certain gaf posters are burning effigies of Sean Murray as it is...

35+ hours now. Only 5 planets visited, one warp lol. Having a blast

The first planet I warped to is this amazing giant planet with verdant meadows, abundant resources and wildlife, and hundreds of monoliths, plaques, observatories and other points of interest. I haven't left it in two days; even located the antimatter recipe there even though the game kept pestering me to fly to a nearby moon for it.

Loving the game, but questions for those further than me:

1) Does the path of
the atlas ever end? I think I've hit up like 7 of the checkpoints already

2) After I finish with that, do I then head to center of the universe?

Thanks :D (also, 40 inventory space hype)

imagine being lost in a cave in NMS,

Imagine not being able to find your ship

and your suit's life support is crashing..

Do you think the PC audience will receive this more positively? Due to more familiarity with the genre through games like Elite, Evochron Legacy, more freeform/zen-paced space games like Rymdresa and Mirrormoon, etc.

Spoilers obviously.

From what I've seen, you got to the center of the galaxy, then get warped to another galaxy, all your gear breaks and needs to be repaired (you keep your stuff, just need to repair) and you do it all over again.

I've found some barren ones. Now if you mean completely barren, no shelters/save spots, yeah that would be pretty cool.
Ye i mean completely barren, and even some gaseous planets like Jupiter or Saturn that would be impossible to land on

Ye exactly i can see why they chose not to do cities, also having AI walking around with transport systems and perhaps dialogue it would take much longer to develop

The earth is very unique in reality.

It is likely not unique at all. Current esimates put the number of possible Earth like planets in our Milky Way alone at 40 Billion. And our Galaxy is but one among billions in our universe. Which is quite possibly one of infinite universes.

So yeah, Earth is likely less unique than my iPhone.

I think both familiarity with the genres and those game alike and things like FOV sliders and options alike will help people enjoy it more. And there is also the chance of mod support which would undoubtedly increase the overall enjoyment, I think.

Another amazing thing just happened to me. I'm in my second galaxy and have had only one encounter with the new race that lives there. Ive been wondering for a while how to uprgrade my multi tool/weapon and in one of the building I finally am able to acquire one, brilliant, well happy with it. It has 3 more slots and looks more badass. Superb. I then go and talk to the life form in the building. I'm told he looks at me aggressively but bows and is polite because tradition dictates it. He then tells me to hand over my brand new shiny multi tool/weapon, I'm given the choice whether to or not. I only just got it!! After some thought I decided what the hell and reluctantly hand it over to him. He takes one look at it and gives me a different MUCH better one, more slots, more gadgets, all that stuff. Amazing game!!!

I think it will be received more poorly due to there being so many examples of better games both for space exploration and survival on the PC.

I don't think it will do badly necessarily but the experiences in both genres are so much richer on the PC that I don't see how this game could compare favorably without the ability to mod it to hell and back to force it into being a richer experience.

I think a good portion of the hate NMS is getting is because it was / is a console exclusive.. some of the criticism it's getting is justified too..but reading the mp thread I get the impression people hate it because it's fun to do so...

Not really sure, depends on how well the version will run? One thing thats possible on PC will be modding. So if you don't like certain aspects of the games you might be able to change them. Like if you only want to explore you most likely will find a cheat for unlimited money / resources or whatever rather fast after release. Walk speed too slow? Someone might find a hack for that ...

In terms of space exploration, Elite Dangerous is gorgeous, has an awesome scale and scope, and is my first space sim so it's special to me, but its worlds are like this. And Evochron and Space Engineers are the other ones
That's the current state of procedural planets in games with this scale and/or seamless landings

Astroneer is the only one I've seen that really compares in terms of vibrant style and variety, but that's not out till Fall

help me out fellow GAFfers: i just startet NMS yesterday and played for like 2-3 hours or so. still on the same planet. found a lot of outposts, places to loot, to save my progress etc. while exploring i get to like a mini-outpost with a slightly different antenna on site (a bulkier one, and a little higher than the ones you save at). but no prompts to do anything at this mini-outpost. my life-support and hazard-support was pretty low and i was in a hurry to get on. at this mini-outpost, suddenly, out of nowhere, my first-person-view zoomed out into bird-like-perspectiv over the planet, like top-down view, few miles above ground, and i could see waypoints that i could hover over with the cursor. i have no idea how i triggered that. i was such in a hurry to get back to my ship, due to low on everything, that i had to press circle to get out of this view. i could not for the life of me get back to that view. tried every button on the controller. does anyone know, how to get into this view on a planet??? it seemed rather helpful to see where you are from top-down on a planet. - and im sorry if its something simple, but i just couldnt figure out what i did. and its bugging me crazy. THANKS A LOT in advance for your help, and sorry for the bad english guys! - love that game! to infinity and beyond! :)

While it's a rich platform we also need to consider that this could become minecraft in space. With proper mod support and possibility of online play down the line or even modded in (if it's possible) it could be amazing. I do think, as long as it's running fine with no issues, will be better received.

Some of the PC feedback will probably be meta bombing due to the surrounding 'controversial' topics.

What kind of tips did you have in mind? Here is some basic stuff

Tips and Tricks
That's some great stuff. You should try to get this to the OP. If anyone else find any other useful tips, it could be gathered and added to your post which will hopefully be in the OP.

I don't have any to add, I got the PS4 limited edition. Only played for like an hour before I shipped it to my friend. I only wanted the loot, waiting for my PC copy to be unlocked tomorrow.

Do we have any impressions on the PC version yet? I know it's not yet released but maybe some streamer or reviewer got a copy?

I'm having the same issue with some of them. I get a new blueprint or a "blueprint already known" message, but when I go to try to make it, it's not in my blueprint menus.

I've been guessing that you need the earlier versions of a tech to craft the later ones, but that's just a guess and some wishful thinking because this would be a devastating bug. Early on, I got a blueprint for the tech that lets you stay underwater longer. I went to see if I could make it, and it wasn't there. Later, I got another version of it, and now both are there. (It is, of course, possible that I picked up a third version of it and forgot.)

I found new blueprints with the same message and I couldn't craft them when I tried. I then realized that I already had that update on my multi-tool. After dismantling it I was able to recraft it in a spot that connected with the other upgrades. That would basically mean that upgrades are one-per-item for each upgrade level. Could it be that whatever you are currently using (ship or tool) already has the upgrade installed?

That's what happens when you press square on the big antennae, I don't remember what it leads to. Usually a monolith I think

The appeal of Elite is not so much the procedural generated nature of it, especially not of the planet surface which didn't exist when the game launched.
The procedural generated content's role is to provide an interesting enough backdrop to the main draw of the game which is space flight/fight/trade.
In NMS it's the main draw of the game, so while it's certainly better than Elite, it is asked to carry much more of the game.

Now imagine Elite's with NMS planets....

My adventure just got a lot more thrilling since last evening. I somehow got stuck on a planet because my ship needed fuel for its launch thrusters but there was absolutely nothing on the surface.

I must have walked a fair 15 minutes until I finally encountered a cave. My excitement went through the roof because I know warm, underground places have the basic resources for fuel. Guess again.

Everything was in that cave. Eridium, gold etc. but no fuel. I couldn't believe my eyes and just decided to go deeper inside the cave, which turned out me getting lost in the end for about 20 minutes but I did manage to find LOADS of fuel the deeper I went.

As beautiful the planet was, it sprawled islands with huge pockets of water and underground caves, the sense of danger of getting lost in caves and not being able to fill my health because the resources were very rare did made me leave the planet.

It's amazing that after 10 hours I finally encountered a planet that was hostile for me without having species and also not being toxic, hot, cold or having a high radiation level but still has me fighting for my life.

I am truly loving this game despite its flaws.

They've been working on improving the Exploration, which is what I care about in Elite.

One of the main reasons I love the idea of NMS. I just love the idea of exploring Space.

but can you do it only once? i tried after getting out of this view, to get back in with square, but no prompt appeared.. (thanks for ur help!:)

I'd rather have NMS but with some of Elite's flight mechanics, the multiplayer and economy!

But yeah, some kind of combination of both games would suit me perfectly, just don't think anyone is making that game and Elite is still years away from having stuff that isn't just dead planets.

Looks like they've posted about some of the issues people are running into and some workarounds here: http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/issues/

I found this interesting, I know some of you have posted about it:

It has been reported that using the pre-order bonus ship will leave some players stranded, if they purchase or transfer to a new ship that does not have a hyperdrive (if done very early in game). In most cases the player is actually able to continue (107 of the 135 reports emailed so far). The game already detects the player needs a hyperdrive and directs them to a nearby NPC who will give the player the hyperdrive they need. Some other players were able to resolve this issue by restarting their console.

Then what are the other better options for space exploration? Starbound?

Whose estimates based on which calculations? Sorry for going OT but this sub-topic interests me greatly since I've spoken to a number scientists and read many scholary articles which all point to the contrary.

So basically if someone managed to successful marry Elite with NMS you would get game of the forever?

If you could marry Elite, NMS, and Star Citizen, all in 3rd generation VR, yes, you would absolutely have the game of forever.

Yeah, it seems like Hello really wants to blow it out so I'd love to see it becoming a thing over time ala Counterstrike GO. I think the advent of base building and proper multiplayer support (if they even can do that) would be huge for the game.

I don't believe it has a chance in hell of making that happen though unless they can do proper and official multiplayer support. Something like the Just Cause 2 multiplayer hack ends up being fairly niche so they really need to do it themselves if possible.

So I've been spending most my cash on suit upgrades. Good idea? Do you get another suit later or is just upgrading your current one to more slots? I'm at the point where it costs like 110,000 a slot. Probably should stop doing that and buy a better ship..

The suit upgrades are better bang for the buck, even later on. Buying my first ship upgrade was around 1,000,000 for a 7 slot upgrade to what I started with. That's not bad, but the ship's I'm looking at now are around 4 million for 27 slot I believe. So now since my old ship doesn't "trade in", im looking at spending 4 million for 5 extra storage slots. Even my backpack upgrades still haven't exceeded 400,000 each yet, so continuing to expand it by 5 slots costs only half of what a ship will cost.

Estimates from findings of NASA's Kepler program. I'm at work so I can't find the exact studies but if you google the story plenty of news organizations reported the estimates starting from 2013 onward to present.
