No Mans Sky | PC Performance Thread

I got another small issue that I haven't seen mentioned though - some times when I launch the game it won't actually show a window, it just spins up a background process that hogs CPU and RAM until I kill it from Task Manager. Not a big deal, but still indicative of the quality of the port.

Guys. We are literally HOURS into the PC launch of a game from a very small INDIE studio. Perhaps have a little patience and give these guys a chance? Damn! Have you never played a PC game at launch before? They have ALL been perfect? :\

Look, I've been at shitty launches the past couple of years. GTA V, XCOM 2, Fallout 4, SFV, I had problems with all of them. Not to mention Arkham Knight and Just Cause 3, but I dodged those bullets. They might fix this in the future, but right now I'd rather play something else or even the PS4 version.

I really can't deal with stuttering.

Most competent PC games do not have the absolutely glaring issues that NMS is bringing at launch. It's a shit port, through and through. No need to defend HG, they put the game out on PC knowing exactly what they were giving the world.

To all the people preaching patience, there is a two hour / two week window to receive an absolutely no questions asked refund.

If they fix it, you can always just buy it again. There is no benefit to taking a wait and see approach here. If the game is in an unacceptable state for you you should absolutely get your money back.

Doesn't run very good for me with everything on medium, no aa at 1080p.
A bit of stuttering but the worst part is the whole game seems to slow down randomly :(
i5-4670

GTX 760

i did the vsync stuff on the steam version.
I got it all a little smoother, but the hitching and stuttering and then fucking 40fps on a new planet...i might try the GoG version if my refund comes through

For you and everyone considering this - do NOT get the GOG version just because you got a Steam refund. Even if the hitching could be a little better (Which I doubt, it's either placebo or the vsync trick that does it), it still has all the other issues. You're better off waiting to see if there comes a patch.

ABZU was fine a few days ago.

If they weren't ready they could always delay.

Well sometimes you don't realize what you're in for until you're in it. Like I said, this is a small dev. They don't have the budget to have a huge pile of testers making sure every single possible issue on every configuration for every player in the PC world is addressed so the game will run perfectly, without a hitch on launch day. PC's are a TON more complicated in this regard. This isn't some revelation either. It should be expected that there will be some launch hiccups that will need to be ironed out.

Even huge budget games have patches and driver updates and all sorts of shit wrong and no one blinks an eye.

Ya, has there been a solid PC launch in forever for a big game? Even the big press indie ones tend to be sloppy out of the gate (the Witness might be a good example)

Day 1 on PC is always a tweak fest. It's open season on hunting down stuttering bugs. That's the territory. No harm in being upset, refunding, or reviewing (it's the best way to get it the attention it needs), but the degree in which people seem to take this sort of thing personally seems to increase with every release

I will give it a go here in a few hours. I'm really hoping I can get it to at least playable, I have been really looking forward to this game.

- 970m
- I7 6700HQ

Maxed out without vsync, Full Screen
45FPS average, lowest i've seen 35FPS for now. Game is installed on an SSD, I've also GSync. No stuttering, smooth as hell. Well, smooth as a game at 40FPS obv.
No problem for now

i7-4790k, 16gb RAM, GTX 970 (368.69) @ 1080p

Game Settings
Maxed out (AA Off)
VSync Off
FOV 100
Max framerate

Nvidia Control Panel
Vsync On
Triple Buffering On

Triple Buffering seems to have made the most difference to stuttering here - very smooth now.

Will test a bit more later.

These settings seemed to give me a pretty big improvement as well. Still some stuttering when flying and loading in new areas but much better then my initial experience.

Man, this is kind of a mess. Multiplayer woes, shallow gameplay, PC errors...hello games had the world waiting with baited breath, but their execution was lacking. With enough patches, this game may still reach its potential within a year, but right now I bet they're sweating bullets.

Or they are being congratulated for launching one of the biggest games of the year, taking in loads of sales, and dreaming of how to spend the money. I highly doubt anyone is freaking out as much as some.

Why would I care or think it's fine just because other devs failed too?

There is no excuse for a terrible launch version of a game.

So I can finally run it...some of the time.

After a lot of tweaking I guess I have it looking as well as it can on my setup.

The image quality seems really poor though.

Annoying stutters too. Breaks the immersion hugely.

GTX 970
i7-6700, 3.4 ghz
8 gb ram
latest nvidia drivers

I was able to get it running wayyyy smoother than it did when I originally launched it. I still have an occasional hitch during loading times? but I was able to get it working way better. I havent left my main planet because I am still fiddling with settings, but I have these as my settings:

borderless
AF: 16
AA: SSAA x4
all graphic settings on high
fps: 90
1920X1080
fov:100
vsync disabled

This is definately playable for me, however I am going to try the OP's FOV mod and see if that works even better.
Got the same hardware as you, only an i5-5690. Runs like a charm now thanks to some tips in this thread :)

Some slowdown when entering a planet sometimes. But I guess it is busy loading then or something.

The gameplay hook is completely shallow.
Minecraft in the alpha had more depth. This is a great tech demo with poor gameplay. The concept is amazing but they do so little with it.

I hope they release an SDK or expand the game greatly

I'm going back to the PS4 version but that one isn't too hot either, it was the first game ever that hard locked my PS4. Plus the crashes, I had more crashes playing this game than if I added all the crashes I had since I bought the console.

Core i7-860
8GB RAM
GTX 960
SSD

The start was rough but once I got going things seemed to improve quite a bit. Don't know if its just down to different lighting levels, but the image quality seems to have improved quite a bit too, the ship looked jaggy when I first arrived but its much better looking now.

Switched to borderless windowed and turned off vsync, there are stil occcasional stutters but its certainly playable.

I'm using the steam link too, so of course I'm on 720p to reduce the input lag, but it works well in my living room.

To those of you reporting no issues, have you experienced any harsh weather or extremely lush planets where the foliage is blowing with the wind yet? Does it still hold up?

This game just isn't good....At least for the price

I think I would have loved this game if it was $20-$25 or so. It has a lot of potential, but with all the technical issues and lack of communication from the devs on top of the issues many have with the design, it just isn't worth the $60 asking price. One day I'll get it on a deep sale.

I turned most settings down and still can't really hit 1080p60 on my 1070.

I figured it had to be an issue with my PC, so I loaded up Doom and I've got that running fully maxed 1080p60. No issues. Seriously this is total BS.

Gotta be something broken in the game. The textures and IQ didn't even look good at that poor performance. This might be my first refund.

You don't have to think it's fine, but don't act all surprised like the (No Man's) sky is falling and you can't believe this is happening. It's a PC, this shit happens at pretty much every game launch whether you like it or not. If it bothers you so much why did you just NEED to have it at launch? Why not just wait and see how it goes?

Performance isn't super smooth on my rig, even with some settings turned down, but it's pretty okay.

I might try playing around with it a bit later, but for now I just wanted to fly around in my spaceship.

Usually hanging around 55-65 fps (no vsync no cap) at borderless 3840x2160 + high settings (SSA x 4 + 16x AF). Everything goes to hell if I'm boosting around in my ship near to the surface of a planet though.

2500K @ 4.31 GHz + Zotac AMP GTX 1080 + 16 GB RAM

Runs pretty well on my system locked at 60fps and in window, I get an occasional stutter but nothing horrible or gamebreaking.

I didn't buy the game. Also, has nothing to do with that anyway.
A bad release build has to be pointed out and not ignored.

3700k@4.4ghz, 16gb RAM, GTX 980. Trying to run the game at 1440p. Right now I have AA off and shadows on medium, everything else maxed.

FPS is just..uneven. I'll sit in one spot, not moving, and it will go up and down by 20, with me doing nothing.

Strangely enough, the ship looks like it's capped at 30 during certain moments, like when you're landed? Really weird performance out of this game.

Yes, I too think that we should lower our standard on the industry in the PC space... Especially at $60.

this is objectively false.

why did you just NEED to have it at launch?

this doesn't excuse a bad port

sweet damage control bro

Something is very wrong.
I have MUCH better perf than that at 1440p with a 980 Ti
