Jimquisition: Sky Hype

I feel like all the people over the years who genuinely asked "what do you even do?" should be apologized to at this point.

Because yeah what is there to do other than inventory management and bare bones survival elements?

I can't even procedurally generate the words. Just fucking what.

It's odd because here on GAF it's the complete opposite.

Those in the OT are having fun and being civil, while the review and no MP threads (filled with a majority of people who aren't playing and may never will) are the threads filled with toxicity and outright hope for the game to fail.

Sure makes you think...

Pure lunacy:

We No Man's Sky fans may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow explorers, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us together.

I am almost inclined to believe that it is a troll post, but then again, it's probably dead serious. Sometimes I feel truly embarrassed to be a part of the gaming community.

Haven't had the chance to watch yet.

Does Jim address the other side of the coin of "Games having a lot of Hype" as well? Which would be completely over-the-top Hate on the smallest things (even when not having played the game at all), outright glee at possible bad critiques, when not actually calling the fans of said games "morons" among other things (as illustrated in the Screenshot on page1 of this very thread in fact).

Because that's a thing too it seems, and props to Jim if he did adress that as well.

Just watched it and he's right.
I fell for the hype and the games disappointed me but I've asked Sony for a refund and I'll purchase Deus Ex instead.
I can't see Sean Murray fixing this game, he's made his money because the game was a full release, not an alpha then beta.

That's not what the video is about. Did you watch it?

Great video from Jimothy. I like the game, but the fucking behaviour from a minority on both sides is so pathetically sad.

I still don't understand why this game in particular resulted in these types of people. It's so bizarre to me.

some people do want to just see things and exist in an incomprehensibly vast space

personally i think it sounds boring as shit but i can't judge

And in the recent sales thread, people are blatantly upset that this game still performed well despite "mediocrity" and "tricking the consumer".

But only one side in all of this gets the negative attention...

Interesting...

I've been excited for this game for awhile. I'm an astronomer so I was very curious. I didn't follow all the hype, just E3 trailers and stage demos but not much else.

I was sad to see how awful the community is when the whole delay fiasco began and now. From the looks of it this has been the nature of this community for awhile.

Luckily it doesn't seem to be that way here and those in the OT are having fun.

The game could legitimately be garbage and people on GAF would still lionize it in their OT. It doesn't make me think anything.

Well one side sends death threats and DDOS sites, but anyway Jim's video did touch on both sides initially and on the zealotry of both but did end up focusing more on the defense force for obvious reasons.

What makes me laugh though is that there was that multiplayer thread which was absolutely disgusting, full of people ravaging the game and throwing insults left right and centre to the devs and people who had been playing the game, yet he is calling out just the NMS fanbase. There have been people wanting to hate on the game since release (but what do you do in the game?!?!)

Always two sides to a coin.

Also just to add: I've played the game for 35 hours and had fun for the most part. It has a lot of flaws, and Hello Games have let me down with their communication about certain things. But I'm hoping they live up to the promise of free updates to get this game in a better shape. I'm aware there are some crazy people on the internet. Most fanbases have plenty nutjobs lol.

"what do you even do in Doom"
All you do is shoot and punch things over and over again. So repetitive and boring.

Just showing how silly of a statement the "what do you even do" has always been. Also showing how silly the repetitive and boring statement is.

If you like the gameplay loop any game will be fun... if you don't, any game can seem pointless, repetitive and boring.

EDIT: on topic - i completely agree with the video. the death threat, hate culture on the internet, but especially in gaming has gotten out of hand. no one should have their life threatened for delaying a game (or reporting on said delay

Haven't you heard? Infinite discovery! The very opposite of this game:

A lot of people want to believe in procedural generation. A lot of people want to believe in perceived underdog developers. A lot of people like space. It makes sense that it whipped a bunch of people up into a fervor.

Best buildup and payoff to "thank god for Jim" in a while

I read your post before watching the video and it still managed to take me by surprise.

Always two sides to a coin.

The side that sends death threats, DDoS attacks a reviewer who didn't like the game, and generally makes the fanbase look crazy by being both crazy and louder than the rest is the one that gets the attention, because it's undeniably worse.

What I don't really get is that also seem to be the people who did hang onto every little info Sean dropped, you'd assume that those people would then also be the most upset by unfulfilled promises

They're in too deep at this point, they have hyped the game to the point where it's part of their identity, an attack on the game is an attack on them

Yeah that's pretty rough and I feel for the guy getting his website DDOS'd. Absolutely ridiculous.

I quite like NMS, even with its flaws, but yeah this is a little much.

While we all laugh at these poor souls, can I say that I am not at all surprised that this game in particular has engendered a response like that from some people?

If you think about it in the most romantic of terms, it's an entire universe (or series of galaxies, rather, but still) that has never before existed, and that will never be fully explored. There's something alluring about that notion. If you can look past its flaws and just get totally absorbed into it (as some number of people always do with games), it's a rare game which will provide functionally infinite content to explore.

Especially for those who might not be big fans of this reality, it's not all that weird.

He does mention the people crusading for the game to fail as well. You guys are leaping to the defence of some seriously crazy people by commenting without watching the video.

Doom was a huge success and inspired an entire genre of games with its gameplay. No Mans Sky is generic survival with a pretty coat of paint. What kind of comparison even is this? Also denying that repetitive and boring arent legitimate criticism for a game is bonkers.

It can indeed get nuts on both sides. All I know is that I was amped as hell for the game since it came out of nowhere and took us all by surprise. I even managed to enjoy it up to a point, but then the cracks started to show and it became a literal chore to play. Good for those still having a fun time with it, though.

Hey Jim I'd like to express my future condolences to you when you have to talk about the release of Star Citizen.

Spot-on about hype culture. Unfortunately it'll take something far worse than what's happened with No Man's Sky to really change things (or so it seems in our current climate)...
Anyway, great video. This whole affair has been a cringefest.

Yeah, I am glad that the game is out, it's over with and reality has set in. But I do wish that PSN would offer refunds, lol.
