Jimquisition: Sky Hype

I still don't understand why this game in particular resulted in these types of people. It's so bizarre to me.

It was the mystery, the vague statements.

Everyone assumed it could be so much more than what was announced because they kept leading people on.

The multiplayer stuff especially, there were lots of people even at GAF coming up with wild theories like, once you get to the center of the universe maybe there's a Star Wars Coruscant of a planet where everyone gets to meet up and that's when the REAL multiplayer starts, the whole game changes...there were a bunch of theories like that. Because it was built up so much.

Look, here's a guy at GAF making one of those kinds of assumptions:

Alright be honest anybody in here going to have the space balls to try and take down a space station
I'm not. I don't mind taking on the elements but I'm not stirring the hornets nest, especially when the hornets nest may be the faction that gives me some juicy upgrades. I'll save it for the tribes, something not ever mentioned but I'm sure they'll be there.

He's sure. He's sure that some unannounced element would be in the game. It's because they were selling a dream, not a product.

I hope this game success will not result in more procedurally generated, falsely advertised overhyped full price indie games. I don't wish for the game to fail. If you enjoy it good for you. Just learn to accept criticism.

I feel like all the people over the years who genuinely asked "what do you even do?" should be apologized to at this point.

Because yeah what is there to do other than inventory management and bare bones survival elements?

You explore ...

There is no apology to make in this case , the "what do you even do" is a meme that should have died month ago

[EVIL DEAD DEMON VOICE]

"JOOOIIIN UUUSSS"

Just when I think this industry and some of it's participants can't possibly get more embarrassing, someone - or a group of someones - comes along and sets the bar a little lower.

Edit:

I still don't understand why this game in particular resulted in these types of people. It's so bizarre to me.

Great question. Human psychology - especially in groups and coupled with a need to justify purchases of material items as an extension of identity - is fucking bizarre.

Gamers tend to lead themselves on. It happens all the goddamn time and yet the developers are always blamed for it. So strange.

To be fair, the DDOS may be the result of people who are having fun stirring up both sides.

Because, really, both sides are being ridiculous. For every fan who won't accept criticism, there's a detractor who is going over the top with attacks.

That's a good point.

The implication behind "what do you even do" is "yes, we know what the devs have said and shown. What's been shown doesn't sound too compelling. What else do you do? Because this can't be it..."

I guess it might be intentional, but it's a shame that he embeds some very valid points in that extremely annoying whining voice, with a vocabulary that makes him sound like the ones he critcizing.

I don't follow him that much, so I don't know if he's always like this, or just did a character for this video?

I've seen such a creature yesterday on somebody's stream. Yeah... randomly slapping together body parts from such a small set was never a good idea.

Procedurally generated animals are the worst idea. Yeah, sure it makes for unique creatures and funny Reddit posts, but generally the designs are butt-ugly since it just throws stuff together instead of a professional designer using his/her creativty.

I don't see how this is anything more than a stupid troll post from an obvious troll account/streamer.

It also betrays a gross misunderstanding of how procedural generation works. Moreover, most of us - hell all of us - haven't even seen a tiny fraction of what is in the game. Maybe that shit exists out there somewhere, but nobody has seen it yet or if they have, they haven't shared it.

Edit: People who bitch about procedurally generated creatures in No Man's Sky clearly don't understand what the fucking game was about. The game doesn't exist without it.

I find it to be pretty accurate (not to mention hilarious). I saw nothing even close to any of the pre-release footage, but I kept hoping and waiting and was convinced that we were indeed getting the game that we were shown. Sadly, I found out the hard way.

*EDIT* I will be fair and say that I did see some neat worlds that filled me with wonder early on. But then the regurgitation began to show.

I like Sterling, still laughing at his GW2 9.5 though.

Guild Wars 2?

Why?

It's odd because here on GAF it's the complete opposite.

Those in the OT are having fun and being civil, while the review and no MP threads (filled with a majority of people who aren't playing and may never will) are the threads filled with toxicity and outright hope for the game to fail.

Sure makes you think...

Yeah I've noticed this as well.

My biggest issue with it is that the pool just seems so small. Like, on two seperate planets I saw two creatures almost identical, some weird bug eyed deer thing with the mole nose weirdness for a mouth. Like it was super cool finding the first one, like "wow! this is insane and weird!" then finding what looks like a slight variation of it systems away was like "oh... I guess I'm going to see a lot of the same kind of things...".

This can't have anything to do with the actual game but more with, more than likely or I hope so, a teenager who needs some fucking help and needs to get encouraged to get out in the world instead of projecting their sense of self onto a video game. I mean, it's pretty goofy and funny to read from an adult's perspective until I realized by the end of it that had I had internet access in my teen years, maybe the result hadn't been any better :/

That all being said...what. the. fuck?

Jesus, that original post:

In No Man's Sky, every planet has it's own feel, every place on every planet has it's own feel. Some people know what I mean, some don't. This game has been created, with love, for pure explorers. Every planet feels different. Every place on every planet feels different. The plants, the animals, the landscape, the geology, the sky, the weather, the sound of your footsteps, the lore, the different times of day, the lushness or barrenness. It all combines and mixes and differentiates and no matter how long you spend, you will never see the same thing twice. You might see similar things, but for pure explorers, that is nothing. Even subtle differences are worlds apart.
That's an important point to counter the argument that, say, each animal is the same except for a different mouth etc etc. Yes, there are archetypes and they can be seen. Yes that IS annoying to some people and legitimately so. But not for pure explorers.

Did this guy play a different game to me?

Also, what the fuck is a "pure explorer"

And in the recent sales thread, people are blatantly upset that this game still performed well despite "mediocrity" and "tricking the consumer".

But only one side in all of this gets the negative attention...

Interesting...

That is interesting.

Lol this aint spore.

It's the same in the subreddit. Most players want to be left alone to enjoy the game, but the naysayers are still controlling and spoiling things. It's clear there was a subset of people who could not keep their expectations in order, and it's fun to poke and ridicule them, for a short time. But the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. The sheep mentality is more in evidence among some of the people doing the finger pointing and ridiculing.

Even though the game does not interest me and I have no intention of playing it, I'm quite looking forward to watching them turn cold turkey, as the developers add more content to the game and they become increasingly desperate posting derogatory comments and articles.
