Jimquisition: Sky Hype

It works both ways with the hype.

There's some people who are so hyped with games, that they go to ridiculous extremes to defend their products. Be it No Mans Sky, SFV or any other recent "controversial" game release. I mean even on GAF with the more tame responses, SFV was great with many people saying "you're playing the game wrong" if you don't enjoy what it offered, lol. The death threats over NMS is just insane, and I just don't understand how people rationalise doing that over a delay...

On the other hand, there's some people who get so hyped over a game, and then end up being disappointed. Instead of just accepting it and move on they go on a hunt to slate the game at every single opportunity.

Either way, on GAF at least it gives good reading. The threads on GAF have certainly given me a good laugh over the past few weeks!

I haven't played NMS yet because the PC version is still borked, but the only thing I want to ask these rabid miscreants is "Is this really the hill you want to die on? A divisive survival/crafting game?" I mean, maybe if NMS really was this life changing monumental thing, but even with all of the vague previews I never had the impression that NMS was ever going to be more than a relaxing exploration game with some survival elements.

It's just so weird to see the things that certain people cling onto. You'd think NMS was some sort of religion for these people and that by slighting it you're questioning their faith or something. It's fucking crazy.

They can be....

Omg you can see that poster climbing further up their own ass with every sentence of that last response.

i agree with him that the overblown hype hurt the game, just look at the critical blowback.

if it had been marketed more realistically i think it would have been much better received. it's hard to say whether sales would have been better or worse but i have to imagine the return rate would be lower.

The fucking Boglin's slapping each other at the end :D

I agree, hype machines are getting out of hand. The whole industry is going through some shit, microtransactions everywhere, season passes, bullshots and faked demonstrations, lying to you up until the very day of release, performance and optimizations low on the priority list...etc.
Maybe it will implode soon and everything will reset.

To be fair, the DDOS may be the result of people who are having fun stirring up both sides.

Because, really, both sides are being ridiculous. For every fan who won't accept criticism, there's a detractor who is going over the top with attacks.

As someone with no interest in NMS, positive or negative, I just don't think this is true. I have seen a lot more from the defensive side then from any aggressors.

Okay Jim my biggest complaint is that you didn't make the Boglins make out with each other. I wanted to see some Boglin on Boglin action.

Just before I cut to the prototype, they start making out.

There's more footage than I used of that. Actually, it went on for a long time.

I absolutely love this man, I only recently discovered his channel and I've enjoyed every video he has put out.

Jim has some awesome video content......the presentation though is top notch. To be honest......some people may take this the wrong way though. It's like watching the video game version of John Oliver just destroy everything while making me laugh at the same time. Pure information and pure entertainment slapped into one package while being informing as hell.

I know very little about No Man's Sky but perhaps the insane cultish fan behavior is because the game's audience is on the younger side, with them targeting the Minecraft crowd somewhat?

Dunno just a thought. Maybe totally wrong.

dark souls fans are hyperbolic and shitty sometimes but they don't seem completely deluded about what their favored game actually is

the defence was ridiculous people just waving away criticism because they like the game. by at the same time any attempt to actually discuss the game (or the controversies around it) was met with insane responses as well. Heck I attempted to explain how advertising's role in the industry likely shaped exactly how they sold this game to people and how even core devs are on a leash when it comes to PR around their games and I was met with cries of liar or i was ignoring the facts or being a shill. I don't even own NMS and I'm not interested in it, but I thought it would be cool to provide some insight into industry might calm down the shit flinging and dog piling, provide a different PoV and perhaps result in some empathy :/

In the end my words just got twisted so I left the topic :/

Don't have time to watch it right now but a commentary on rabid fans... that's showing some grit there. Morbidly curious if it draws further ire from them or not.

Man this thread and the FFXV delay one, with the reddit/disqus comments being posted, idk if I should laugh or cringe.

Reading stuff like this, one has to assume it's the words of teenagers with mental disorders.

We now live in a world in which EVERYONE is online, from very thoughtful people, to very confused or disabled people. So many people behave horrendously online, but I have mixed feelings about ridiculing them because it can be so hard to tell who is really speaking, and just what their issues might be.

The internet of 2016 mostly just makes me depressed. The incredibly heavy moderation on GAF makes it one of the few places that's bearable.

I love the game. Jim didn't. That is OK. His points for not liking it are valid, however I think his opinions add some great insight as to things I can see being changed for the better. I love NMS because I'm a Banjo Kazooie fan. But I'm not above others calling for changing or adding features to better the experience, I am all for it. As long as such persons opinions are well thought out and sound.

Now why should myself or anyone else be so hostile towards others opinions? I just don't understand how being so toxic makes an individual look cool. Just because such persons are hiding behind a anonymous user name, does not make hostility, a valid tool for putting their own flawed personal agendas on to honest working peoples.

This behavior needs to stop.

I am so hyped for this video. Can't watch it now, but I have a champagne on ice and hot tub ready at home, that's how hyped I am. I'm expecting great things from Jim with this one. Hype!

They are still not as bad as Dark Souls fans.

Nah, NMS are my new least favourite fans. They dethroned Bloodborne fans in terms of rabid obnoxiousness.

Ugh, these Sagan/DeGrasse Tyson worshipping faux-intellectuals is exactly why the backlash was always gonna happen. They placed such ridiculous standards on the game that it was never gonna meet and spent years in that subreddit nurturing outrageous expectations.

I didn't think anything could make me cringe as much as some of those posts from the guys that got banned for cheating in Overwatch, but holy shit. Dude, you're a Reddit poster talking about a fucking video game. You're not Henry V talking about St. Crispin's Day.

I have to admit, I doubted his review and was filled with wonder for the first few hours playing this game. Then after a few hours more it began to sink in how right he actually was. Once I got past the novelty of landing on and leaving planets, I realized the game amounted to nothing more than a shallow loop of pure drudgery with regurgitated assets and abominations that mainly just differ in color. Not to even mention the technical issues.

I suppose it goes without saying that there should be a zero tolerance to these death threats but it makes me wonder if a small minority of people got the ball rolling with Jason, and then it became normalised behaviour. Spreading to Sean and throughout the community.

Jim is right to take publishers and perhaps even developers to account on this stuff. I'm not sure what they can do though.

Those Boglins are going to end up in Toot Crates.

I'm genuinely starting to wish I didn't like the game now. I'd rather not be associated with these clagnuts.

Also, "dicks for eyes" is now my new favourite insult.
