Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

I'm much more excited for a new MBP than the upcoming IPhone unless Apple somehow surprises us. I'm thinking about just skipping this years IPhone and getting a 6S and then upgrading to next years iPhone. Apparently that's supposed to be next big update to the iPhone.

Had to buy the 2.9Ghz 13" model yesterday as mine had conked out the previous night. Hurts that I've had to replace mine so close to the launch of a new model but needs must.

I might buy a refurb 13" here soon just to get by before getting the new ones. And then just sell the refurb when the time comes

yet performance is important to you?

what do you plan on doing with it?

Work, mostly webdev. Opening giant Photoshop files. Running virtual machines and servers and stuff. No gaming.

It's gonna be my main work computer for the next few years, and money is not really an issue. I just want good performance - no waiting at all.

Just keep buying and returning it to Apple within 14 days till the new ones come out lol

It's ridiculous it's taken this long to update the MBP.

It's ridiculous how out of date all their Macs are except for new MacBook. On MacRumors buyers guide every single model is on red 'Don't buy, update imminent'

I guess red goes with the redheaded stepchild the Mac is now in the world of iOS printing money.

I miss the days when Macs launched were exciting, pushing the boundaries of manufacturing and technology integration - integrated wifi, bezel camera, backlit keyboard, light sensors, magsafe, single slab unibody...

My worst fear is the new MacBook Pro will be an underwhelming slightly thinner MBP with a LED strip.

As long as the next 13" Pro has:

- USB-C and Thunderbolt 3
- Skylake
- A keyboard more like the Magic Keyboard than the 12" MacBook version
- A DCI-P3 display

I'll be happy. USB-C is the biggest factor because that's clearly the future of USB and I don't want to buy a computer today without it.

There's no way that they would ship it without USB-C. Actually impossible

Were the leaked pics debunked? I'm honestly set on it having 4 USB-C and that's it.

Which sounds cool for 2020, not necessarily for now yet. But I guess USB charging + charging from either side is pretty neat.

Yeah, they wouldn't limit USB-C to just the MacBook. It'll be in the MacBook Pro in the fall and definitely the iMac in time. And if it's ever updated, the Mac Pro will get a couple too, and hopefully keep the other ports too, but who knows.

The real question is how many other ports will they keep with it. If we're lucky, they won't go all "one port to rule them all!" on the Pro machines. I can see the iMac losing a bunch of ports and just retaining a few C ports, but the Pro machines should keep at least a few other. Right? Well, who knows. From Apple's thinking, USB-C at its best can support every single port they already have with the right adapter. But from the consumer standpoint, no one wants to have to carry every single adapter with them just in case. It's a pickle really. I fear their endgame is definitely only having USB-C ports on their machines with a bunch of adapters that, yes, they will include in the box. At least a standard USB adapter. The others will be extra. And a third party will probably release a USB-C to EVERYTHING POSSIBLE adapter at some point if it doesn't already exist.

I've been giving some serious thought into jumping into the Apple ecosystem with a new MacBook Pro. I'm super anxious for an announcement to finally make things concrete so I know what my next computer purchase will be.

Anyone able to relate what the transition from Windows to Mac is like? I have a Windows desktop that I primarily use for gaming and some Android development, but most of the time, I prefer to be on a laptop around the house/out in the wild.

I'm guessing the new MBP's will only have USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, but there will be like 3-4 of them
I'm all for it as long as A) they include just a USB adapter in the box. Just a normal USB adapter just to make it simple out of the box. The other ports I rarely use so I wouldn't be clamoring to get them. (And please make the USB version cheap to include more if needed.) And B) allow charging from any port. Please don't require that the charging be done from the left back port. I want to charge from the right side. Also C) make sure the charging cable/brick is high voltage enough to charge at the same speed it would normally.

Bonus points if they make the brick have a second USB-C port on it that you can plug your iPhone into and have it both charge and still act like it's connected to the computer. That would be neat. (Unless there's a technical limitation to do this. Like if it can't both charge the computer and send data at the same time. Or maybe it would just go lower power when syncing.)

I have a hunch the next iMac will just have 4 USB-C ports, an ethernet connection, and the power plug.

And they'll be salty as fuck that they even had to include ethernet.

the entire keyboard has touch keys? fffuuuccckkkkk that.

No, those are the holes where the keys go in.

Note the difference between the normal keys and the top strip, where the OLED goes.

Edit: Saw your edit.

Anyways, if that shell turns out to be real, then I change my previous hunch and I'll add a headphone jack to the future iMac LoL (thank god btw)

If P3 is in (15") I'm all in even if there's no spacebar key.

I have not been up to the recent developments, but what speaks against an sd-card slot, aren't they as thin as it gets?
I bet more battery space. Note the headphone jack being moved back to the rear instead of in front of the ports. They've probably done some amazing miniaturization and want as much space for battery as possible. Let's hope they haven't miniaturized it so much that it's gimped. It's supposed to be a Pro machine after all.

You really think they will include ethernet?
That's too expensive. Need to keep those profit margins high. I've they want an ethernet port they should get an adaptor.

I am not even sure they will bother to present a new iMac. Their desktop computer must have downsized to 5 people now.

They've given the iMac more and better updates than the MacBook Pro the past few years!

I also am not that against the idea of USB-C-only on the new MBP. USB-C -> USB-A hubs are pretty cheap now, and there'll be several ports unlike the new MacBook. And any USB device with a separate cable won't even need adapters, just new cables. At least one or two USB-A would be preferable but all USB-C would be tolerable as long as they're enough of them (and four, as rumored, is enough).

Sounds like a gimmick unless they do something to make it feel tactile and customizable which they probably would.

Give me an OLED screen instead.. but the price would probably skyrocket.

id be kinda surprised if the haptic feedback they put into the trackpad isnt part of the touch strip.

this this this
All I want is for it to not be picky. 4 ports. 2 on each side. All should charge. And it will be smart enough to cut off if more than one charger is connected. Though how cool would it be if you could connect 2, 3 or 4 AC adapters and have it charge faster? I mean the battery is split into sections. Let it smartly charge each one separately and individually based on the number of chargers you have. I know it's an edge case as who would really have more than one charger if not more than two? Still, it'd be a neat touch.

Of course they'll screw us and make it require you to use the top left port and it'll have a "Power" icon on the one you need to use. The rest just won't do anything. (Please don't do that Apple. That's something PC laptop makers who include 2 USB2 ports and one USB3 port do*. It's a bullshit move and I hope Apple doesn't do it.)

*Or in the case of the PC I got for graduation in 1998, it came with two USB ports but no USB support and no circuitry and no documentation saying that the USB ports were non-working because it happened to be the cheaper low end model. Fuck you Acer.

I feel Apple has a different level of usability they hold their desktops to. Removing ethernet is unnecessary for a desktop that doesn't have to worry about battery or thinness, and saddling enterprise/education buyers with a must-buy dongle just to get their machines to do something as basic as connect to a network... I don't think they'll think the drama is worth it.

As for a new iMac, I don't expect it this year, but yeah I have no doubt a new one is coming within the next 18 months.

Please please please have TB3 eGPU. I could save thousands upon thousands of dollars by just maxing out a 15" rMBP and hooking up an external 1080 Ti and having that be my gaming desktop and school laptop instead of buying two machines

It's literally my dream

Yeah, I'm hoping the iMac gets a new industrial design along with USB-C/Kaby Lake.

MBPs already support eGPUs (on a windows dual-boot) right?

It would be awesome if we got direct compatibility on the mac end AND windows end

Do they? Like they would totally work in Boot Camp? How about stuff like gsync?

I've never done it myself, but I've read about it working pretty well. People used external PCIe enclosures with thunderbolt ports. It was over thunderbolt 2, which current MBPs have. Hopefully the trend continues with thunderbolt 3

Apple will kill it with this MacBook

The demand is going to be off the charts. I better get one before the end of the year

I hope so too, I'd shell out incredible money for a TB3 eGPU enclosure and all I have to do is keep changing out the graphics card

Do we have any idea when this is coming out?

Reveal isn't looking good for September, but they could always bump it up. October reveal/release or November release seems likely. There's been conflicting reports on whether Apple does October events anymore

This is the future and the dream. I hope so damn much that we can do this. Let's pray together Zeyphersan.

If I could have a 15" MBP with external GPU support that works

1) For the internal display

2) Under both macOS and Windows

I would have basically no reason to ever own a PC ever again.

Quick question, should I buy a used Mac book air while I wait or just wait for the new Mac book? The air is 2011 and around $300 but has battery problems. I want to use it for Xcode rather than using my hackintosh.

Well you could buy the used machine if it's that cheap then try and sell it later. You might get the same amount back if not more.

Does your Hackintosh do its job well enough for now?
