No Mans Sky | PC Performance Thread

I tinkered around a bit more with resolutions figuring out what was wrong with the anti-aliasing, and I finally figured out the problem with the scanlines/shimmering effects.

The problem is that the scanlines themselves don't scale, so any anti-aliasing will still look funky at any resolution other than 1080p (or any other multiple of it, such as 4k).

Using a combination of VSR and turning my game resolution set to 1080p, the game looked much, much cleaner than it did than my monitor's standard or double resolution downsampled. I feel as if the effects themselves have been tailored for the 1080p resolution!

Edit: I guess I was being stupid. The shimmering is still there, but much less noticable with the downsampled resolution.

The driver says it includes SLI support but the game still only uses one of my 680 cards. Do the developers need to code it in or something? Why doesn't it work?

*Edit* Ok SLI is working now. I had to delete my profile for the game out of Nvidia Control Panel. Now the game is silky smooth.

So this is what worked for me:
Install the new Nvidia drivers
Delete the profile I made of the game to tinker with settings in Nvidia Control Panel (game ran like crap on the new drivers with this profile)
Install the Experimental patch for No Man's Sky
Borderless Window, FXAA, 16x filtering and V-sync enabled in game (no longer using the Control Panel to override it).

And now the game runs a very steady 60fps in 1440p (I was running 1080p before) using my two GTX 680s in SLI.

Interesting find! I was under the impression that SLI support doesn't work when in borderless windowed mode? Maybe this has changed?

How do you delete the cache?

Awesome. Where's the cache located though? And can I delete just the cache file for NMS or will it affect all my other games too? And, even better, does simply disabling shader cache in NVCP mean you don't need to delete the actual cache files?

No Man's Sky/GAMEDATA/SHADERCACHE

Delete the entire SHADERCACHE folder, not just the contents within.

It's best to delete the folder. Some people mentioned performance increases without doing it, but some had to do both the driver setting and that folder.

Man, I caved and got the game last night.... playing at 2560x1600 I was averaging about 40 fps with everything maxed. Can't wait to install the updated driver with SLI support so I can use my other 970. I'm interested to see how well it scales!

any patches for this yet?

Nothing aside from the experimental branch. Although there was a tweet yesterday from Sean Murray that PC users would be very happy indicating a patch was on the way.

(Hopefully this is more than the experimental patch being made public)

The new driver made it worse for me. With the previous ones worked pretty well, a stutter here and there but very playable. Now not only stutters like crazy but when i open the UI in some planets it tanks my framerate.

Which new driver? There seems to be one that updates with Windows Update and one through Nvidia themselves.

The game still runs badly for me even with SLI and the new driver. Deleting the shadercache folder and disabling shader caching makes no difference either. The framerate is higher and actually smoother, but when I'm moving around and stuff is being generated is when the stuttering starts. Perhaps the game just doesn't work well with older CPUs (I have an i7 3930K)?

Tried the new nvidia drivers and performance is definitely better! My FPS went up a nice amount.

Before installing the new drivers, I deleted the custom profile for the game, and set shader cache back to it's default "on", and the stuttering was there again. So for the time being I would recommend leaving shader cache to "off" and waiting for the official game patch that is supposed to address this issue to come out.

I'm thinking the new patch will be out at sometimes today/tomorrow.

Internal resolution multipler

Damn really need to try this mod now

I assume it works the same as any DSR method, meaning performance is affected significantly?

Ah good to know. And yeah, this is just a convenient way to do it specifically for NMS. It'll take a hit still depending on how much you go for.

As above from noomi, if you haven't deleted your SHADERCACHE folder and turned off Shader Cacheing in the NVidia control panel, give that a shot.

Hey Guys,
This is my setup:

Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz
GeForce GTX 960 Galax KFA2 EXOC 2GB Edition
16GB of RAM

I've fully updated Nvidia-drivers. The game usually stutters a bit for like the first five minutes or so, then it runs smooth. But everything looks so jaggy. I've optimized the game through the Nvidia control center: basically just the suggested settings. My frame rate is 30fps. On Game Debate it says my setup can handle a max of 38fps, so I guess 30fps is all can squeeze out of it, right?

Anything I can do to make it look better? Any mods you can recommend? Thanks.

People should NOT have to go through all of this just to play a crappy game with a couple of hours of repetitive gameplay...

This is just horrible...

How on earth do you all go through this every time a major title is released?!

We don't go through this with every major release.

This and Batman Arkham Knight are the only two I can think of in recent memory.

(Also, playing on PS4 now and the gameplay is great.)

I pressed a drop down on shader cache that switched it to off, then I clicked apply. This was day 1 and everything was fixed.

Thankfully it's a great game and I've already sunk more than a couple of hours into it. But thanks for your concern.

So there is quite a bit going on with the CPU in the game, it's doing more than it should so hopefully a future patch addresses that.

As for the mods, this is the main ones to check out to get rid of some of the silly filtering:

Nvidia 372.54 has tanked my frames, both with and without experimental build.

And have deleted Shader Cache + Disabled as well as left it turned on in Nvidia Control Panel with Shader Cache left in binaries folder.

The new drivers killed my framerate too until I deleted my No Man's Sky profile in the Nvidia Control Panel. I put it back to default, deleted the profile and used the in-game FXAA, vsync etc using the experimental build. I had great frames after that.

How does your stuttering work?

My game runs great until I move like 25 feet, the game dips into the teens and even single digits. If I stop in my tracks right when the drop happens the FPS will stabilize back to normal(it will also stabilize if I continue, but I will likely run into another dip pretty quickly)

So odd, maybe it's the CPU but I have a hard time beliving a 3770k matched with 970's in SLI is being bested by a game that runs smooth on a PS4 CPU and GPU...

Hopefully it gets patched soon, because although I'm having a blast on PS4, this game looks so damned good on PC at 4K...

When you say 'deleted the profile', do you just mean putting it back to default?

Pretty much the same behaviour but I've not seen the framerate drop as severely as that. I have a GTX690 (dual GPU).
