Reddit Compiles Definitive List of All NMS Missing Features/False Marketing +Sources

The proof just keeps piling up. I don't expect we'll hear anything from HG on it... But it would be nice if they commented. There's just too many things that aren't there or you can't do etc.

Some people told me the game was exactly what it was supposed to be, looks like they have missed some things here and there lol...

I'm saying it's still possible to enjoy the game.

Which is it. It's flawed. But you can still enjoy it. Lies and warts and all. You don't need to scrutinise every centimetre of every game you play.

Sure and I can use my imagination and enjoy watching paint peeling on a wall.

Well, I for one love this game and I'm loving what I'm getting out of it. It's so hard to put down, there's just something about it that's great. Fuck yall niggas.

Jk. Kidding yall.

With that said I didn't get on the hype train of the game, I stayed away from everything besides live demos and what not. After seeing this I can completely see why people are upset. They've gotta address this and they have to at least do something about it. Isn't it "illegal" to say these things and not deliver? I mean, that's not great at all. Luckily I received the game from a dope person (since I couldn't get it) but even so I feel for everyone who's not getting what they were promised.

They just can't duck these facts at all. This is sad.

The defense I usually see is "well, the game is what they said it would be, people just imagined it'd be more..."

This torpedoes that nicely.

We were talking about this the other day in one of the now-locked threads.

A) We think that, legally, only what's on the box and what's on paid-for advertising (i.e. commercials, billboards, etc) are 'legally binding'

B) Somebody who evidently knew his shit said that if you've bought the game you don't have a leg to stand on in terms of suing or anything like that.

And if you don't have any legal basis for being owed compensation, why the fuck would you be owed an explanation?

(I'm not saying it's right, just that it is what it is.)
I tend to agree, but that post suggesting people shouldn't care is just odd to me. The 'you'll get what you're given' reasoning. That's all well and good as long as it wasn't sold as something entirely different.

I wouldn't entertain anything on a 'legal' level - that's kind of OTT. I just think the way he's handled the info for this game is cagey and kind of appalling. I understand why people are fuming about it.

It's that shady 'i won't say it, but i'll suggest it' style of salesman bullshit - similar to that Aliens game - that makes my skin crawl, and it seems he does it quite regularly. I've followed this game for some time on and off - I pre ordered it, which i NEVER do - and even I was under some impression that it had some Journey-ish drop in drop out multi, along those lines. He's been incredibly deceptive.

Right, okay, let's drop the philosophical facts about how language works (that it's subjective regardless of dictionaries or definitions) – fine, functionally, it's evidently not a river, but if you're standing on a slope looking at the thing, while exploring this alien planet, you'd be a total dullard if you moseyed down for a closer look just to ascertain if it's flowing or not. The lack of flowing water in the game is definitely disappointing - but the 'river shape' is in the game and that's more than enough, IMO. They achieved plenty with the procedural algorithm already and they have a perfect base to build on. As somebody just confirmed - flowing water was added to Minecraft in a patch right after it went public - I wouldn't be surprised if HG add it into NMS at some stage.
I mean, do we really want to go down this line of argument? Minecraft was in the equivalent of an Early Access stage when proper rivers and oceans were added.

No Man's Sky is past 1.0 and is already a full price product still lacking proper water flow.

I believe the game should've been "early access" and worth $30 bucks. win win.

It is a current. If you are standing in it it pushes you in a direction that is showed case in the texture scrolling. It also moves and fills in a space. It might be primitive looking, but it behaves like water should. At least in principle.

Curious to see what happens to that body of water in NMS. If you dig around it will it fill in that space? Does it have current?
Based on what I've done so far, it basically just looks like if a planet has water on it, then there's just a plane of water surrounding the entire planet at a certain depth. No matter where you dig on the planet, you eventually hit that water.

There's no such thing as rivers. Rivers are the game generating river shaped terrain beneath this water plane.

shame.

i guess they just have an inside sphere that is water then.

you should screen grab for further proof if you can.

I'm totally on board with you. Just pointing out that there's nothing owed.

It's just a completely abysmally handled PR situation. The complete radio silence from Murray is utterly ridiculous, I hope he comes out with a public letter soon.

Sure and I can use my imagination and enjoy watching paint peeling on a wall.

Cool, thanks for engaging with me so intelligently, and enjoy wearing those blinkers. See you later.

Yep, I admit that the sodium would be far less salty if NMS was priced even £10 cheaper or had an early access phase. They totally bit off more than they can chew, and judging by how they've handled it they probably didn't realise it until very recently in development. I still just hope they can salvage it to some extent - I don't think it's an unrealistic hope.

IIRC he was also talking to press who had access to the game on Monday. I don't know specifically who received copies and who didn't.

That quote only mentions the press who didn't receive copies; not those that did.

Two of the biggest press markets didnt have it, so who would have since you said some did?

Sony’s reps, who have been handling marketing and PR duties for No Man’s Sky, have informed reviewers that they’re waiting on a ‘pre-launch patch’ before sending out codes.

If Fable had been scrutinised to this level literal lynch mobs would have gone after Molyneux, it was so utterly unrecognisable based on how he described and hyped it.

Considering a large portion of the complainers haven't bought or played the game it would be hard for them to win any financial consideration. Maybe an hourly fee for the time they've spent watching streams and complaining on message boards?

Yeah! Completely agree. Just say something ffs. It's an incredibly poor look.

It's a shame because on the surface level the game is super chill and I'm really enjoying hopping from planet to planet late at night with some music playing and finding some cool sights. He didn't even need to sell it as more than that.

This thread was going alright for awhile

Cool, thanks for engaging with me so intelligently, and enjoy wearing those blinkers. See you later.

What's wrong? You don't like watching paint peel on a wall?

Do you see how ridiculous it is to tell people that they have to lower their standards in order to enjoy something that turned out to be much different than what they where expecting?

And you can watch paint peel for free. A whole lot of people paid $60 for this game.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Review copies were never given and the reviews were only able to give us information days after release. They had to take their time to review the game. I don't see how this argument holds at all.

Then, quite honestly, why did anyone buy the game? Why would anyone buy a nonrefundable game from an unknown studio without reading any reviews whatsoever? Regardless of the reason those reviews weren't available.

(Also, early review copies probably weren't given out because they were still struggling to complete the game on time.)

Yeah! Completely agree. Just say something ffs. It's an incredibly poor look.

Well, yesterday he did tweet "we're going to make some people very happy with a PC and PS4 patch that's in test right now :)"

So let's see what that patch is about and what the plan is for the next one.

how can you say features are missing unless you've experienced every single planet/solar system in ever universe in this game?

Oh this is a really great shield isn't it.

Did you know there are massive titans wandering the land in Minecraft? If you never find one it's just because they're rare and you need to keep generating seeds until you've experienced all 18 quintillion of them.

How is this game the opposite of what they were selling? I'll happily admit that there are stark omissions, but the opposite?

I'm not saying you have to lower anything. I'm not even saying you have to enjoy it. But equating this game to paint drying is petty and boring. You should heighten the standards of your critiques

Where did I tell you to lower your standards? If you go to a gallery and look at a painting, there's a difference between fairly criticising it while 'taking it in', and going over every inch of it with a magnifying glass, studying for imperfections. Have you even played No Man's Sky?

Sometimes the sum is greater than the parts, yadda, yadda, even if the sum isn't all that great by itself in the end.

And as mentioned previously, the game is - in the main - exactly what Sean Murray outlined. Tons of details have fallen by the wayside - and he lied about them which is terribad - but the overall scope and vision has been realised.

SomTervo is here, but whither SolidChamp?
SolidChamp, post if you're ok bro

Yeah, gotta admit I'm intrigued to see what that's all about. Hopefully not just fixing the crashes.

That's a great question. If I or anyone else knew exactly what combination of things made so many people pre-order an indie game from a tiny studio with little track record, that probably cost buttons to make (relatively) then you can bet I or they would be set for life because that is a liscence to print money.

If I had a platform capable of playing it I'd probably have got it day one too it just had that something about it.

If people where expecting the things in the list to be there, and they aren't there, then yes, that is the opposite.

I wasn't a person who was super hyped about this game, I was just mildly interested. I feel like based on what they always showed of this game, and what it ended up being is pretty shitty to the average consumer. Some of us because we're gaming enthusiasts will know and maybe understand that it was a small dev team...but the average consumer (and there are probably a lot considering how well it has sold so far), will only see a $60 game, that does not look much like what they showed it to be for years. And it's not very fun because of what's lacking to me personally.

I was saying this to the guy, too. No review copies before launch just means... Don't buy the game before launch?

Also they're not an unknown studio - they put out the well-received Joe Danger games.

Maybe it is the real version of the game!

Do you remember those days? :-) Reddit comments were golden, so much hope and denial.

People really don't like that this game has been successfull do they? Lol.

Please stay on-topic.

This was a list created by multiple people who paid for this product and have paid for tens/hundreds of hours to find missing features/false marketing.

This thread shouldn't devolve into off-base insults and get locked for a derail.

PSA 2: We can confirm that there are advanced review copies planned for No Man's Sky later this wk. We'll post the embargo once they go out.

It's rather hard to find actual from-the-horses-mouth statements like 'we now have our review copy'. IIRC a streamer on GAF (maybe the late legacyzero?) mentioned he got sent a code by Sony.

If people where expecting the things in the list to be there, and they aren't there, then yes, that is the opposite.

Let's not go overboard. "Opposite" usually means something other than "absence thereof". For example, people often take the opposite of love to be hate, rather than indifference.

Except went the opposite of "present" is quite literally "absent".

The average consumer I doubt was looking at it under a microscope like gaming enthusiasts would.
