Wait, so normal people get mugged in Rio daily and it doesn't make Rio look bad but Olympic athlete get Rio without getting hurt make Rio look bad. How does the Olympic athlete make Rio look worse than they already are? What kind of logic is that? Brazilian telenovela soap logic?
I don't get Lochte's motivation for making something up, but he's a dumb ass. Any idea that he was having sex with hookers so he has to cover it up is odd, because there was no one coming forward with a story that he was out partying with hookers. Also, I'm not sure partying with hookers really hurts Lochte's image.
Though, if you ever watched his reality show, that interview is not someone making a story up on the spot so much as how dumb he normally sounds.
That said, I don't understand why the Brazilian government is going hole hog on a fake story to NBC, and a few police reports over a robbery that may or may not have happened. Not to say it isn't a crime, but it seems a hell of a jump to yank passports 3-4 days into a potential investigation when whatever the hell they did doesn't exactly rise to the level of detaining foreign citizens.
If anything, this would be a deport to country, visa revoked crime if they did make something up.
Smells like the Brazilians trying to save face over all else based on a judge's reading of a non-conclusive security camera video. Like, we get it. Your president and prior president stole a shitload of money, athletes are competing in shit water, you can't keep a pool from turning green, none of your infrastructure is finished, you have a failing economy and a crime wave that led you to close the beaches after dark instead of policing your country.. and you are going to yank two swimming bros off a plane because they *might* not have been robbed like they said they were?
You didn't just compare RAPE to maybe making a false statement did you? Because that is just fucking silly.
Yes, of course if you are accused of RAPE you don't get fucking deported. But the cost of investigating what is at most a misdemeanor is really not worth the effort, when you can say leave and never come back.
Only reason this is even being pursued this vigorously is the media attention.
Well, StoOgE, it turns out that even with a green pool and a corrupt president, the Brazilian Federal Police would still very much like to catch criminals who rob Olympic athletes at gunpoint. And so they investigate those crimes. And when the investigation of that "crime" reveals that it was in fact an athlete from the super powerful, rich, free, heavenly safe and beautiful, best country in the world, - 'MURICA, anyway, it was an American who committed a crime, an entirely different crime; when that turns out to be the case, our Feds unfortunately can't just pretend nothing ever happened. It's a very unfortunate chain of events, that I'm sure everyone would have liked to avoid, but guess what: when dumb people do dumb things, bad things happen to them.
Yes, you guys figured it all out, Brazilian authorities are doing this in an attempt to erase all the bad press about the olympics.
I hope they get stuck here for a while, fucking liers. Too bad lochte escaped instead of admitting on cheating on his girlfriend or doing blow or whatever. Fucking coward.
Yes, you guys figured it all out, Brazilian authorities are doing this in an attempt to erase all the bad press about the olympics.
No, I did not.
The police are not just investigating a misdemeanor, they're investigating an armed robbery. They can't close the books on the serious crime investigation without getting to the bottom of the dumb crime investigation.
The only ones pursuing this vigorously is the media. Hearing that the person involved had a reality show probably explains why the US media is all over it, but for the local authorities this seems like a pretty standard investigation. They've investigated multiple crimes involving athletes and IOC members, and them dedicating time to these issues is part of the ridiculously expensive package the Brazilians are paying for with these games. Enjoy.
You don't go to a foreign country, commit a crime and then literally get away with it, fortunately.
I can't help but read this and get a hint of some sort of agenda, I wonder what that is...

It's also amazing that, the only "evidence" we have is a video taken after the fact that they were not "distraught" enough.
Dude, we bitch about what happens in the United States all the time, you seriously can't take criticism of Brazil at all can you?
So why waste money trying to extradite and detain them? I mean if, as you said, they are "just" investigating the robbery, why not pick up a phone? Clarify the statements and be done with it?
You said:
Pretty sure you aren't referring to the alleged robber. So which is it? Are they investigating the robbery or the swimmers? Sounds like it's the latter.
Fuck thieves, we can nab Americans for lying, that'll show em.
It's like that bit in every Popeye cartoon where there's a can of spinach just out of reachWe just need to get them near the water.
Local news covering this because one of the detained swimmers is from Rockville or something. They're stating the swimmers detained by the police never filed a police report. How do you hold someone for a false police report when they're not the ones who spoke to media and no report exists?
No, I did not.

Lochte is such a bro. Love it.dude is smarter than he seems.

bailed his ass out of there. his teammates should have done the same. lol
I just wanted to say: there are no beaches being closed at night because of security concerns. It's a fallacy.
And the same police that's doing the president investigation is doing this investigation. Why trust them then and not trust them now?
And, i suppose no one needs to know about this, but for people saying "why don't they fight actual crime in Rio?"... they do? That's why the city has been on a donward slope on crime for many years. Still very violent, but no more violent than many cities in... Usa

That line of thinking "they shouldn't care about this when there are more important stuff to do" is a bit of a bollocks. There are always more important things to do, but you can't go and ignore everything else.
At least the olympics are soon to be over and people will end with exaggerations about Brazil and Rio, since they will stop caring.
It doesn't work like that anywhere in the world. When the police launches an investigation over alleged crimes, they have to follow through all the way, no? I've seen that on multiple episodes of CSI, at least, haha.
By pursuing the swimmers vigorously, the Brazilians are just keep putting a bad light and bad publicity to themselves. How are you going to prove they were lying? They aren't even talking. You don't have cameras in every corner, you will never prove anything happened or not happened in the commonly accepted standard. So you are just wasting resources (you can use to catch the thug that robbed the other British athlete.)
An what if a Brazilian judge decide to put the 2 remaining athletes in jail? What are you going to prove? Americans are liars? Never mind Ryan Lothte was the one who made the statement. And IOC and American diplomatic service have to come out to beg for lenient sentence? Obama has to make a call? Just to make it a 10 times bigger farce than it already is? I already said it before the end game doesn't make Rio look better now you just want me to spell it out for you.
As I said, it comes down to a vindictive attitude, a lack of generosity form a tourist city. Maybe the Rio residents got royalty screwed by the tyrannic IOC demands and corrupted local contractors, you don't want to take it out on the visiting guests.
Here's the difference. Anywhere else in the world, the police don't launch an investigation when all they have is a vague Today Show interview. If I went into LAPD headquarters raving about being mugged, they would say "did you fill out a report?" I could be bleeding on the floor and they wouldn't do anything other than call an ambulance for me until I filled out a report. They don't have time to launch a federal investigation over the equivalent of some guy telling another guy in a bar "Yeah bro I totally fought off three muggers."
Shit like that, or this Lochte thing (if he's lying) are why they require an official report before they expend resources.

Lochte gave his statement before he left. There was an investigation underway before those guys were summoned.
You're just getting your facts wrong.
And say what on the phone?
- Hey guys, the evidence here is really showing that you made up a crime and lied to us.
- Oh yeah, sorry about that.
- But that's actually illegal.
- Oh no problem, that's just a minor misdemeanor, so we cool right?

And the police aren't asking for anyone to be extradited, that's horseshit from your media. They will forward 12 questions to Lochte through the FBI, the idea of Brazil asking the US government to extradite a US citizen over this is absurd.
Police: "Hey we heard your grandiose bar story to your bros that you were a victim to a crime. We know you were just talking crap, and you didnt file the report, but we have to investigate anyway, and if we dont find your obvious lie to be legit, you are liable"
Liar: Wait a minute I didn't even involve the law enforcement, I was just tell a story at the bar to make me look like a bad ass in a robbery
Well the big deal currently is that Brazil will pull you off planes and detain you for telling tall tales. Pretty scary stuff. Now this is going to be in the news until the swimmers come homeWhat's the big deal?

My point is that Lochte shouldn't have had to give a statement to the police in the first place if he didn't want to. Or, I guess, wouldn't have at home. And either way, theres no evidence unless the Brazilian feds are hiding something, waiting for a Phoenix Wright moment. This is clearly political.
Like, if I go to Brazil and over dinner I tell my buddy a tall tale that I fought off a mugger, and a cop happens to be sitting at the table next to me and overhears... am I going to be pulled off of my plane two days later when that cop's investigation, which he initiated on his own, is inconclusive? Of course not.
...Right?
He gave a statement together with his lawyer, members of the US Team as the police requested. And it was not just a mugging. He is saying that a gang disguised as police officers ambushed his cab, implying that the driver was part of the scheme. This is a lil' bit more complicated than 'boys will be boys telling their tall tales'.
Stop with delusions of grandeur that they are playing a political act. This is a worrisome episode and justice is at work.
Also, they have been detained for a suspicion of false witness and communicating a fabricated robbery, which in Brazil is equivalent to fraud.

He was a victim until the judge saw some many inconsistent details on the statement that she decided to summon them for further explanations. Now they pretty much are suspected of fabricating the whole story.
Lochte just fled the country before the judge dispatched the order for seizing his passport.
I have the impression that it would have been way less overblown if it had been a normal robbery. When you state that it was a fake police patrol, you're up for some complicated developments.
And they are not hostages, but they can't leave the country. They're not even restricted to their hotel afaik.
Stop with this weird nationalistic defense please. It's absolutely political.
You may have missed my edit, but the two dragged off of the plane never made any statements or testimonies on the topic and were never interviewed by the police. Why are they being dragged off of planes and not allowed to leave the country?
They are enrolled as witnesses since the opening of the process. The law gives enough power to the magistrate to keep them in the country in order to conduct any investigation necessary.
The opening of a process that nobody asked for. This is not a good look, and not what Americans (who comprise the majority of this forum) are used to, and thus find surprising. That's all.
im amazed at the posters from the us (maybe?) talking about brazilian laws and how investigations work or should work over there. maybe we should listen to brazil gaf about this matter because they are the only ones that know how things really work over there.
