PS4 Pro specs revealed - 4.2TF, 8GB GDDR5, up to 310W power consumption

No universal power supply? That's disappointing. Since the PS3 they've had universal 100-240v power supplies. I wonder if it's external this time.

how does it compare to a 970 with an i5 4670?genuine question since i know very little about this kinds of stuff

Similarish GPU power, maybe a bit more for the 970 due to the downclocked Polaris. Way worse on the CPU. The i5 is way better than a Jaguar.

SHould have also shown some 4k of cod4 next to the current consoles and then old gen

Probably would have really sold the point

Graphical upgrades, better framerate, and 1080p for all games is nothingburger? Alright

Doesn't mean much to me--nowhere near worth upgrading from my OG PS4. I can see why some on GAF would want it, though.

So this is more flops than my i5 6600 and 970 gtx. Is this more powerful?
Depends on your 970 but just looking at the FLOP count it's probably still more FLOPS than the "Pro's" GPU. Mine is at just over 4.5TF at its factory OC that boosts to 1430MHz. The main issue going forward though is going to be potential VRAM limitations which probably won't be that big of a deal for another year or two.

CPU wise any i5 decimates the shit CPU in the console.

Idc what year it is, 6 TFs in a console sized box is insane. I used to game on a Coleco Vision.

Its like people have forgot how much tech has progressed.

NVIDIA has dropped the "M" line of their GPUs and now laptops will have full GeForce cards including GTX 1070s and 1080s both of which are obviously way more powerful than what's in the PS4 Pro and in a smaller form factor. Cost an arm and a leg but that's where we're at.

Neo was a much cooler name...

You can have a $200 UHD dedicated player if you're interested in movies. Will read UHD blu-rays way better that than the Xbox One S...

UHD players at not 200 dollars. The cheapest you can find right now is $299. You're probably mistaking 4k upconverting players.

LTTP:

  • Is the polaris in question part of the new 16nm APU or 28nm
  • Does the heralding of PS4 Pro with its max power consumption of 310W (a 100W more than first gen PS3) mean that with PS5 can boast respectable specs at comparable price point?

That is all a console iteration could provide you with? Heck it's 90% of what a whole new generation provides you with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Unless you are looking to go quieter/cooler, than that's what the Slim does.

Does this improve the graphics of regular PS4 games? I missed the presentation.
There's a list (a very small list) of 'forward compatable' PS4 games whose performance is increased in some way..I think. Hopefully more titles will be added to take advantage of the power. Someone just made a thread.

When talking PSU, then it has to compared to the PSU.
PS3 first gen was 400 W PSU.

I'm sure that it's 14nmFF or 16nmFF and that the power consumption figure is just the rating of the PSU. I don't know the figures for Sony, but I know that Wii U consumes under 40W despite having a 75W PSU, and the same ls likely happening here.

I'm sure you'll still have people in the old Neo thread speculating how Sony can overclock the mega defibrillating unit twice over with a reach around in order to bump the specs and outclass the Scorpio.

Not even bothered by the specs though, never have been. More bothered about the lack of UHD drive and the design. Sony have missed the mark by gimping out a bit.

True. Seems like the Xbox S is almost as powerful and does more media wise than the new Pro. That's pretty crazy!

The Xbox One S is a 1.4TF console.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is a 4.2TF console.

I think you should reconsider your math.

The ideal for PS5 is that AMD can hopefully align itself to the TSMC process nodes going forward, this should enable significant improvement vs. shitty GloFo. This should in turn lead to better semi-custom designs since the base designs wouldn't be so awful to begin with. This is just an unfortunate period to be aligned to AMD hardware, they are in a shitty state.

While true a laptop with even a 1060 in it starts at £1200 over here, for that you could get a PS4pro and a good 4K HDR TV. Or ps4pro and PSVR and lots of games.

Probably already mentioned, but like 30-60 minutes ago one Insomniac guy said there is some extra stuff in the Pro that helps to increase the resolution in addition to the increased raw power. Do we know what he means? Or did I misinterpret his comment (don't think so, but who knows)?

I was posting from memory as and just saw the spec sheet so apologies for my mistake.

Still means a just over a 20% increase, would suggest ps4p draws upto 180 Watts, I can believe that but it still seems high when the full RX 480 only draws 150 and the other stuff is barely going to be more than 50.

No need to apologise. Have you seen how many confused people there are in this thread!?

I have seen card only figures for RX 480 of 160W+ including RAM but even taking account of the reduced clock of Pro, all those other things in Pro really add up.

I guessed the Pro would have a 300-330W PSU over a week ago now so it really isn't a surprise to me. Some games that push Pro to the max will, as you say, likely use around 180W but a lot will only use 150-160W I think.

Cerny said as much during the presentation. There's definitely some custom hardware on the GPU that helps with driving resolution but we don't know what yet.

You remember this guy at PS4 Reveal Conference in February 2013?

People had fun saying he had a flash of the future. Now we know what that flash was about: PS4 Pro. His disappointed face says everything, really.
Jokes aside, I'm not sold on this PS4 Pro. The improvements are pretty much what I expected but now that it's so close I can confirm that I've no interest in this mid-gen updates. Plus, they're pushing too much on 4K and HDR for the new TVs and that annoys me a little, honestly, because all I care right now are more solid games with the tech already available, at 1080p. Let the PC be the platform with muscles, console are not ready, that's what I say. But to each his own, as always.

I see a lot of people believing they have to have a 4K TV to use this. That seems silly. Why couldn't you use a 1080p TV and still benefit from the performance increase? Surely this thing can output at 1080p and it's not forced to always do 4K output.

The 970 will have greater real-world performance(the 970 has similar performance to the 480 at 5.5 TF, so a 20% downclock on that in the ps4k is much worse). The I5 is much much better.

The fact that you ask this question tells you just how piss poor this hardware reveal was.

Any info on the HDR version it'll support? I'm guessing that it'll be HDR10 but would be pleasantly surprised if they went with Dolby Vision as well.
I thought they added 512 megs of memory? From the leak.
The leak spoke about 512MB of extra memory freed up for devs as a side effect of the OS footprint being reduced thanks to the higher memory bandwidth.

Outside of that it's not logical to add 512MB to a pool of 8GB.

People are going nuts and saying im skipping and waiting for Scorpio... A console with the same lead weights around it even more powerful legs. Remember no Xbox one user left behind. Same disc for both consoles etc etc. Both companies have same plan, extend the life cycle.

It sucks for the basic level consumer as it makes them a second class citizen but this is the game, either get on board or strap in for the ride.
