PS4 Pro specs revealed - 4.2TF, 8GB GDDR5, up to 310W power consumption

House looked disappointed announcing it. Look of apprehension on his face was palpable, you could tell those in the room already saw the thing was a total shitshow.

Why being so stubborn to release the console this year, They could have waited for next year and ship the stronger sku with UHD Bluray player when components become more affordable like OsirisBlack said. They would be still ahead of Xbox Scorpio.
Sony really needs to review their strategies.

Looks like Scorpio is going to be the by far most dominating home console when it comes to power. Looks like 3rd party will back to being an Xbox thang.

Incorrect. PS4 used a 250W PSU and used 150W. The PS3 used a 380W PSU and used an absolute max of 210W but more typically 180-190W.

Sony have always specced the PSUs like this presumably for the 50-60% load efficiency sweet spot.

I was posting from memory as and just saw the spec sheet so apologies for my mistake.

Still means a just over a 20% increase, would suggest ps4p draws upto 180 Watts, I can believe that but it still seems high when the full RX 480 only draws 150 and the other stuff is barely going to be more than 50.

I think $400 is a great price point for this.

I also think Scorpio will be roughly the same price when it launches a year from now then. Likely $400 with low hdd model up to $500 for 5TB

It's going to be interesting to see how a mid gen refresh will do against a new gen console as early as next year... Good luck with that, Sony. I'm curious how long they will have to undergo that situation. The PS4pro didn't make any sense to me from the start and i have no idea why they decided to release a mid gen refresh. It would maybe have been understandable if they were still a big player in selling tv's but they are not. And the thing doesn't even support 4k blu-rays, which is equally strange.
Do you believe the Sony mesagge really?.
Pro is here to fight a 16nm MS console going to be launched almost one year later. This move seeks to make Scorpio too expensive(comparatively) or too late.Sony wants to force MS out the desktop console business.

~1800p I guess.

Which is around 5760000 pixels compared to 2073600 at 1080p.

Which is a pretty great update 3 years after launch imo. 2.77 times the resolution. IQ will greatly improve. Having seen 1800p content I can tell you it looks a lot better than 1080p.

Is this downscaling thing possible on PCs too, or does it require special hardware?

Maybe it was for VR, but I think they could have easily done well with the Slim and give better specs to the PRO had they released it next year.

While true they wouldn't over spec that much unless they had to. The OG PS4 used a 200 watt PSU and it's power consumption was around 150 Watts. This system should not use much more than 170 Watts yet the PSU can provide upto 50% more power. It just does not make sense to me to over spec by such a large margin unless there was a reason.

Sure.

Higher rated PSUs run cool when they are not heavily pushed.

310W PSU will run cooler when PS4Pro takes ~180W when compared to the 220W PSU that is tasked to deliver same power.

That 20M sales target by FY2017 forced their hand.

If people didn't see how the three console versions (original vs. Slim vs. Pro) compare, Sony rated the original PS4 at 250W.

Original:

Slim:

Pro:

Some quick comparisons (not including graphical power) between the Slim and Pro: 56% of the volume, 64% of the mass, and 53% of the max power consumption.
Thanks i was looking for this.

Unfortunately, The powerful Scorpio will not be able to be on shelves this november...

Yeah.Something is iffy.IMO they could have upclocked Jaguar more than the leaked 2,1 Ghz, far from its tdp efficient sweet spot.Being the only data not published in the spec reinforces this.

I own BOTH consoles, and I will prob buy PRO (even with the disappointing specs) and then Scorpio.

I am not BIAS at all..

However, MY GOSH.. this conference was beyond boring. SONY def needs a Phill Spencer version for themselves...

And how will that power take shape when same as on PS4Pro, no games are allowed to be made only for Scorpio.

Scorpio will get same games, with same 4K rendering penalties and benefits for 1080p gamers. It will have stronger HW, but differences will not be large.

When you're selling to 5 consoles (NX/PS4/PS4 Pro/Xbox One/Scorpio) you're not going to be targeting the most powerful one first unless it already has the highest sales. I'll be surprised if many third party games get any kind of Scorpio boost over the Pro that is anything but a slight framerate/res boost.

Nah. Sony got caught flat-footed on Scorpio.

PRO is a board room solution to being bad on timing for VR. VR is coming to market much faster than Sony predicted and they need this to keep in the playing field past early 2017.

Thats why the PR on the device is so muddled. As it undercuts the OG ecosystem, and fuck if they're going to announce now their AAA VR is $950 to get in (Pro+PSVR+Move).

They'll cross that bridge when they come to it. But its the only reason this device seems to make sense.

how does it compare to a 970 with an i5 4670?genuine question since i know very little about this kinds of stuff

Idc what year it is, 6 TFs in a console sized box is insane. I used to game on a Coleco Vision.

Its like people have forgot how much tech has progressed.

Will it be insane in a year? The GTX 1180 will likely be just about out and pushing 12TF at that point (the new Titan is 11TF). At PS4's launch it was 1.8TF, versus the GTX 680's 3.1TF, which is actually a closer gap. Scorpio will be further away from PC peak performance than the original PS4 was.

The one year gap between now and Scorpio's actual release is fooling a lot of people.

I can see them making a native 4k 60fps Forza 7 or something.

A 8 core Jaguar, a HDD, a bluray drive and a fan won't draw more than 50W.

Anyone can create native 4K60 game on both Scorpio and PS4Pro. It's just a matter of optimizing the game enough.

Didn't watch the conference. Is it worth it to get a Neo if you don't have a 4k TV?

Sorry if it has already been asked.

New [or old but patched] games will get benefits for 1080p users. RotTR on Neo will support 1080p60, 1080p30 but with maxed visuals and 4K30 rendering. Several shown games support downsampling [1080p+ rendering downscaled to 1080p for great AA].

However, even if you own an HDTV that does not support either 4K or HDR, PS4 Pro still provides a number of benefits. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate. If you’re a gamer that wants to be at the forefront of innovation, PS4 Pro is for you.

The i5 is a different galaxy compared to the Jaguar. GPUs are near enough a match but your GPU will have more games actively designed to take advantage of it's full feature set without being gimped to a 2013 product.

By the time Scorpio hits the shelves, there will be 60m PS4 users playing the same 3rd party games, so what is this "3rd party Xbox thang" you're talking about, some kind of consolation prize?

It's a games console first and foremost and that's why people will mostly buy them. For better visual presentation and gameplay of the GAMES. If people want to buy a peice of plastic just for a 4K Blu-Ray player then they have more money than sense I tell you.

If i'm going to have to buy two devices anyway why not XBO:S for the blu-rays with some gaming and just use my PC for better presentation and visuals.

It will "dominate" on Digital Foundry Youtube videos maybe. But that's it.
