Sony likely saved about $15 by not including a UHD drive in PS4 Pro.

But not 4K UHD. The adoption rate for 4K tvs isn't forcasted to hit 33% until 2019, while at the same time physical movie sales continue to see double digital declines on an annual basis. Combine the two and you a niche market combining with a declining one.

Sony has access to market data, and decided that it wasn't worth the $15. That should tell you something.

Just like MS had access to similar data regarding digital uptake before the Xbox One reveal.

Not too many business minded mathematicians here just passionate gamers that want more TV options.
I'm pretty sure most people understand that they're saving money, it's just that not everyone cares. They could also not pack an HDMI cable or they could just not paint the outside of the console. I don't give a shit about their bottom line, I know what I should expect for the price and what other options I have and I'm disappointed with what they're offering.

Microsoft are tossing a bunch of things at a wall seeing what sticks.

It's probably very telling that you are seeing a lot of Xbox One S bundles for under $300 less than a month after launch.

Just like MS had access to similar data regarding digital uptake before the Xbox One reveal.

Difference is, Microsoft has to throw in the kitchen sink to try and attract customers. Sony just needs to keep the status quo. Definitely a very different world when you're the number 1 by a huge margin.

I like how this PS4 Pro reveal is so ironically opposite to the XB1 reveal :'D

XB1 Reveal:

TV TV SPORTS!!

Neogaf: "We want a Game Console!

PS4 Pro Reveal:

4K Gaming 4K Gaming HDR!

Neogaf: "We want UHD Player!

Oh, the hypocrisy :)

Nah, i remember Sony and Xbox fans alike condemning Microsoft's all digital future. Now with the pro reveal defenders are acting like this all digital garbage is ok. It's movie discs vs game discs but still.

Because everyone complaining has a 4K tv ready to watch 4K blu rays on their new PS4 Pro that they're still going to buy at launch despite saying that Sony has lost a sale? Give me a break.

Again, the audience for UHD is tiny. Sony is not gambling on format wars again. They learned their lesson.

"But the format war is over?"

UHD competes with BR, streaming, Sony's own digital store, and even DVD lol.

LOLOK cycle time. Cause MS's didn't release a UHD console more than a month ago. What a stupid fucking post.
The post isn't outright defending the decision. That poster is just saying it's not just $15 but a lot of work, time, and money and that simplifying it in such a way is disengenuous.

Way to not read and be a total dick about it at the same time. Impressive.

Big difference is the quality of 4k steaming and physical is huge. It be like comparing PS now and local machine playing games. Sure it can be done but the quality sucks.

We're talking about movies and not games, yes? Not to mention it still plays DVD/Bluray discs?

Your buying a gaming machine though, it also gives you the 4K option of streaming movies or downloading them to your system. It's not really anti-consumer if you still have access to your future 4K purchases. Just don't buy physical.

If you really want physical, buy a UHD player, It's your choice. Meanwhile Sony makes money from their games and services not physical shit.

It's also not removing the physical based games so the all digital future condeming isn't present.

And when the PS5 is out, I imagine it'll probably include a 4K blu-ray player.

Microsoft doing a console revision that changes their drive to something else is not really a standard for most console revisions.

PS5 will definitely have it, this seems to anticipate that.

I agree, Microsoft's move was definitely unusual for a mid-gen refresh. I think it's also kind of brilliant.

bwahaha

This will be a storm in a teacup scenario commercially speaking but lol what a shit move. Oh well I'm already using the bone as a media centre and Scorpio will continue that.

I hope not. I think the future should be cartridge media like the NX along with digital. Optical media should die out IMO.

Unless they completely get rid of the optical drive and go all digital for the PS5. Or have an add on for optical discs. I went all digital for this generation of games. I don't expect to ever go back to using game discs. I've really enjoyed the last three years of using my Xbox Ones and PS4 without dealing with game discs(except for the occasional rental)

Yeah why would they want spend a little to build an ecosystem that helps them sells drives and discs that bring in revenue and royalties all while lowering the cost of production through scale?

If you think they made the right choice fine. You might be right. But don't pretend that everybody who puts forward a different take is some kind of idiot.

Do you honestly believe there wasn't lots of internal conversation at Sony about this very topic? Were the people who wanted to include it in those discussions mouthbreathers? If not then don't make sweeping generalizations.

As for people just wanting more, that's a consistent as the sun rising every morning. But some of us recognize there are tradeoffs and think Sony made the wrong one.

You do know Sony sells physical movies right? So they make money off people buying Sony movies. Physical makes sense for 4k HDR streaming tech is not remotely ready for 4k HDR.

In theory I agree, but I suspect we're more than five years out from that becoming a mainstream way to sell media. Maybe the NX will change everything? Optical media is still cheap as heck to mass produce; no idea when the scales will tip though.

That's the important thing. Whether they were right or wrong to do this, no one can really say until further down the line. But no one is really an apologist for understanding why they went the way they did.

This is why buying all the console hardware is a win.

Scorpio/Xbox One S will fill your media needs that the PS4 Pro won't do. Along with giving you some awesome exclusives.

Two different departments. They also have UHD Players so they still make money on Physical 4K Spiderman, Angry Birds, Ghostbusters and Sausage Party Movies.

Isn't that millions of dollars based on how much they sell? Potentially billions?

I think the last blu-Ray I bought was happy feet lol.

I think only time will tell if this was the best decision or not, but I certainly don't care. Just seems like something Sony should have done because of the competition.

I'm planning on buying a 4K TV within the next 6 months. I am not going to shell out the money for a 4K TV and not take full advantage of it. Streaming is convenient and I'm sure I'll use it for 4K content but I will also most definitely want a UHD player to take full advantage of my shiny new toy. Looks like Scorpio is going to be the way to go for me.

So you're going to wait about 6 months to get a 4KTV and then wait another 8 months or so to buy something that takes advantage of that TV?

~$15 is quite a bit when talking high volume. 10 million units means a difference of $150 million, not exactly a small number.

I'll be saving the $400 on not buying one, I hope the math works out for Sony
I think it will. The people who had a UHD movie capability as the main tipping point between buy or no buy is probably quite low, in my opinion. And look on the bright side, this saved you $400 that you can spend on other things that you want instead. It makes the choice were to spend your money easier :)

what about the future when games are put on UHD discs?
They wont. All games should work on PS4 as well.

Well this is a games console, it's not a movie box. Sony have always maintained its #4theplayers not #4themoviebuffs.

Don't be absurd.

Sony was the biggest force in getting CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays out there through their consoles. They aren't above making their consoles multifunctional entertainment boxes. Not too long ago they pushed their consoles as just that.

But they've never pushed the PS4 as anything but a games console that merely had multimedia features.

The PS3 is considered one of the best multifunctional entertainment consoles ever released. It strikes me as so odd that they're avoiding carrying that title over to the PS4.

And not just avoiding it. Straight up going out of their way to prevent it.

Exactly my point. Somehow MS managed to pulled it off 3 months earlier when most of his proposed "expenses" are time cost. Give me a break, what an apologist excuse.
