Game Informer: The origins of Horizon: Zero Dawn (NeoGAF shoutout)

So March 2010 is when production began.

Anyone else finding it pretty unnerving that we're at 6 year development cycles now...

Really misleading way of looking at it. Plenty of creative ideas go unfinished for years, decades even, before finally being brought to life. James Cameron didn't work on Avatar for 15 straight years.

I had a vague interest at the start when it was announced but the recent trailers and things from the sony meeting and game informer have me super hyped for this, it looks amazing.

I just hope that the open world isn't your usual ubi-soft style open world that's padded out with a shitton of copy+paste elements all over it. Hope they kept it more natural and varied where you don't get bored when exploring and finding new things.

Loved the interview, the guys at GG look so chill and passionate. Amazing.

Cant wait to play it I only hope the story is better than in KZ.

Haha! Hello Guerilla Games, here I have some words for your word processor: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you.

That obviously means I will probably like your game. ;)

This is one of my most anticipated games. I love the look of the game and the dinosaurs of course. The main character looks awesome and fresh. Finally we get someone that isn't just a short haired white guy.

Really good video so props to GI. Also sending some love to GG as well, if you still lurk here on GAF, I think you got something great going so just keep it up.

There's a backlash? What'd I miss?

I dunno, but I sure missed it. I see the occasional post from people trying to push their opinion as fact that it's not a good game just because they didn't enjoy U4. I can't disagree more though. It is one of my favourite games, was engrossed in the game more so than the others, but I won't say my opinion is more valid than those who didn't enjoy it, just different.

I just hope that the story doesn't suck. Still my only fear, not really encouraged by them saying that they came up with the story only after the gameplay and concepts have been completely finalized, but I remain hopeful.
I find it disheartening as well. Story is an afterthought for developers way too often. It's like they never learn -.-

In most open world games it feels far more like the gameplay is an afterthought if you ask me. The fact that Horizon looks to have more than competent gameplay from what we've seen is great. I do wish for a great story and characters but I'm just happy we might get one of the rare open world games with decent moment to moment gameplay.

I wonder what that conversation must have been like from CDProjektRed?

"You see, then you have this unicorn and..."

Game looks great. Only game out there thats begging me to break my no-preorder policy.

I disagree with this interpretation. With how tight-lipped they've been with the story stuff, I think they definitely care a lot about it. Just because it wasn't the very first thing they came up with doesn't mean it's an afterthought.

They've mentioned plenty of times how excited they are for people to experience the story. I have confidence they're at least putting some real effort into it.

Yeah seems like the FPS mentality of gameplay first story later is still there. Also the video seemed lacking when it comes to discussing the story.

I don't think that was ever said in the video. They said that they didn't have the story or gameplay figured out at the time they decided to go ahead with the concept.

What UC4 backlash has there been? The game was/is damn near perfect.

Also, I feel pretty glad they've gone for Gaf word clouds, from what I've seen from the Horizon threads it hasn't rubbed people the wrong way like most exclusive games do. You have the odd shit-posted that you recognise from almost every Sony thread but the reactions have been largely positive. This game to me always looks like this crazy concept art for a cancelled game that you wince at never being made.

There's a backlash? What'd I miss?

Not a damn thing probably some small dedicated group.

Someone actually compiled a list of recent U4 LTTP threads that were either negative from the start or positive thread that turned into backlash threads.
Latest thread was a couple of days ago, not sure how you all missed this. The OT (and even the street break thread ) also had its share of detractors but i guess the mind is good at ignoring things you dont care for.

Conflicted about Uncharted 4

Is anyone else dissapointed by uncharted 4? (Spoilers)

I cannot help but feel a bit dissapointed about Uncharted 4

Uncharted 4 Narrative Failings (Unmarked spoilers)

Uncharted 4: Nathan's theme is actually pretty awesome

Uncharted 4's soundtrack was incredibly disappointing

LTTP: Uncharted 4 | a.k.a why people can sometimes be really shitty

LTTP: Uncharted 4 - Yeah, this is the one

The climbing was awesome in Uncharted 4

I mean damn. Everyone of these threads are vastly negative about this game. I think Uncharted 4 broke a record for most threads made in less than a year from it's release.

OP, if you are waiting for this game to pick up I honestly can't say you will. Maybe from time to time here and there. From what I read on Neogaf for months since it's release this game is just not for everyone. It doesn't matter if you enjoyed The Last of Us, you can still be disappointed with Uncharted 4 because at the end of the day they're to different games in terms of story, gameplay and world. UC4 also takes the more grounded approach compared to the previous Uncharted games. Once again this game just isn't for everyone because there was not enough action, to much climbing and pacing problems from what I heard from a lot of people on here. Also, there are people that don't like The Last of Us because they found it to be a boring movie.

Edit: Can't wait for the next disappointing UC4 thread lol.

I love good stories..but I can't play a good story...well I can but I'm tired of walking simulators for now. So I'm fine if they wanted to get the gameplay right first

Edit:^lol

OMG yes that was an awesome shoutout.

To me, that list is a perfect example of why GG absolutely should not be listening to NeoGAF :P

I get it, but to me both should compliment each other and neither should be the lead.

Story often comes at the expense of gameplay though and even the best game stories pale in comparison to books, movies and TV series so I find it more important devs get the one thing right that makes games unique, which is the gameplay. It's hard enough and I hope Horizon gets it rights. It has a couple of things that worry me in that department, like Tallnecks working like Far Cry's towers, painted textures that show where to climb and scanning enemies for weak points.

Good to see them shed the killzone cloud

2 was fantastic but they needed to shake off the IP big time

I pray they read complaints about kz's missed story potential. They have such a mysterious story but it can be so easy to screw it up

The game looks great and I really hope it manages to deliver. It's a game concept that deserves to succeed.

I'm SO glad the team finally moved on from those stupid Killzone games.

The problem about U4 is that a lot of people expected something different. That is the one of the main risk when you do a new chapter of the same saga after 5 years. The game itself is extremely good ( not perfect , just like every game out there). Another example is Xeno 2 which disappointed people because it felt different from the first one on WII.

The salt when Uncharted 4 wins Gaf's GOTY is going to be great.

So far it has my vote.

Considering it's a new IP and they didn't have the manpower or even an engine in place to develop the game, I don't think it's something to worry about.

What they said about designing female characters made me smile. Exactly the kind of attitude I like to see :) Also the Zoids shout out!

GG guys drinking Jupiler, the superior Belgian lager. Although Vedette will always be better, it still beats out Stella and Maes.

It's good to hear that developers (at least GG) are taking Gaf's opinions into account when developing a game and not solely rely on current market trends or self-proclaimed analysts.

Really hope Guerilla delivers with this one because it's probably my most anticipated game right now. I've liked everything I've seen so far though, so fingers crossed.

Great vid from GI. Yeeees to that Zoids subconscious inspiration, good taste. It was nice to hear about their design choices behind Aloy, too. Sensible design ahoy!

First time I saw this game I was a little skeptical since I was a bit overloaded with open world games. The feeling left me as soon as I saw that cyber crab battle lol, game looks fun as hell and I'm all pre-ordered up and ready to go. Also I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Zoids when I first saw this lol.
