New Horizon: Zero Dawn Gameplay from the TGS 2016 Media Session

I'm always excited to see more Horizon, however I'm still not convinced the writing and voice acting will be particularly great.

We've only seen a small fraction admittedly, but it remains a question mark for me.

I think it's a safe assumption that it will be mediocre at best. To be even decent in an open world game is pretty monumental.

I agree, in a sense it dont look fully open world. Not cause of graphics or anything but just the gameplay. Looks about as open as uncharted with hubs or something.

Eh, now that's just silly. I don't know what gameplay you've been watching, but they've already showed part of the map. I'm not sure what about this doesn't look open world, but that's certainly an opinion I haven't seen before.

ffs at all these conspiracy theories

"It's not really open world"

"It's not really an RPG"

Until we see otherwise, it's an open world action RPG just like GG have said.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a discussion on what makes a 'real' open world game ;)

Again, open world isn't the be all, end all for me (density of things to do >>> openness) but this seems plenty open to me: E3 '16 map animation

As much as I am looking forward to H:ZD, there's no doubting I also feel sense of open world fatigue. Like when people go on about how good the GTA worlds are and all I can think of is Yeah, but I wanted to explore and do about a tenth of what was available to me. And me saying 'a tenth' is being massively generous. Technical marvels don't mean much of anything if what fills them fails to engage, and all I do is go from A to B (mission to mission) in the fastest time possible. And so my one wish for Horizon is that the world is filled with interesting, dare I say "new" things to do. Of course, it can still end up being a good game if that isn't the case (see MGS V and its sparse open world), but it'll be a better game if it is.

Nah, the gameplay is too good for it to be an RPG, and the platforming is too smooth for it to be open world.

I think Guerrilla should take that as a compliment? They confirmed that the game is a seamless open world action RPG, not a sectioned off open world, and not "kinda RPG".

CDProject/BioWare/Bethesda have really screwed up people's perception on RPGs and/or open world games.

I really enjoyed this footage too..

GG are crazy mad when it comes to the atmosphere they add, I like the way the mist billows over the grass in that one scene.. it just adds to the overall ascetic.. a small detail but wow...

Just noticed during the Watcher takedown sequence in that, some of the scenery looks like rusting tanks & APCs - definitely a couple of what might be railgun barrels there.

Such a beautiful game, if this is on standard PS4 (it should as the build is improved but not in an unreasonable way), than who needs a Pro anyway? :P

A true action RPG must have Witcher combat, with Mass Effect animations and Fallout character models.

If it doesn't meet the above, then it's most likely fake open world. /s

Thanks for explaining.
That's me too, particularly this bit. I don't see a reason to explore or fight so far. Is it just to complete NPC quests? I'm sure the fist encounters will be interesting but not for the Nth time. I feel a bit the same for BotW but at least there are the shrines that I want to complete and the puzzles will be different for each.
There is a story in this game, believe it or not. What a silly complaint.

lol I don't play games for their stories.

There is a whole plot point that , machines are getting corrupted and you are lloking into the source of it, why the machines are getting haywired. And also you are looking into the origins of your past, and why are you outcasted from the tribe. I hope these are your reasons for explore the world.

I didn't get one thing though , when you are not play games for stories and plots, than why are you asking for reasons to explore the World?

So out of interest, what do you look for in an open world RPG? This game has a story, quests, vast expanses to explore, a variety of (mechanical) creatures to discover and fight...like most open world RPG's. What is it missing for you? It sounds like you've never played/been interested in any open world rpg's judging by your complaints.

You're basically saying "The game is giving me no reason except gameplay mechanics to play it". Does Mario give you a reason to for going from jumping from A to B? Does Street Fighter give you a reason for fighting your opponent until their health reaches zero? "The game is giving me no reason to explore and fight" is such a weird thing to say.

Seriously, and I say this as someone that loves The Witcher series. But even then, has it reached a point where any game claiming to be an open world RPG, that actually dares to not have janky combat or character movement can't possible be an open world RPG? "It has Uncharted climbing, it can't be open world". lol wut.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that GG would be so bold as to go against such clearly established standards.

Pre-order cancelled, Pro will be binned the day I buy it, and I'm done with Sony for good. Dammit I want my jank!

Facial animations look identical to the E3 demo to me. Also, not sure about these menus. Seem a bit rough. Maybe they're just placeholder.

Looks fantastic otherwise.

Holy mother of god that looks good. Im likin the diversity in the characters. Fuckin GG doin work.

This reminded me why I stopped listening to the Match 3 podcast. When HZD was first shown off they were ranting about how a caveman game could only have white people in it, completely ignoring the montage of different tribes.

I explore the world mainly to find new gameplay scenarios and settings. Like the missions in GTA (Even if a lot of them ends up quite similar). Collectibles are more often than not just useless padding. GTA also has lots of different activities that play differently.
I'm not saying H:ZD won't have those but I hope for variety.

John Gonzalez should get as much freedom as possible. I want the writing to be as good as in New Vegas.

The game looks absolutely incredible. One thing I dislike though, is that the UI is too crowded especially with all the markers and icons everywhere. It looks almost like the Bloodborne parody picture at times.

Of course. I wish I could explain it! I really love the design of the robo dinos and the idea of a post techno apocalypse setting is cool. But outside of that nothing about the actual show of play and design of anything else jumps out and grabs me. It's all very spectacular and gorgeous, no denying that, but the footage thus far of stealth, exploration, climbing, and combat isn't resonating with me. I don't really like the design of the main character (plus she walks like she needs to shit), nor much of anything else in the world beyond the robo dinos and some of the vistas.

Basically where I feel I should be compelled to explore the gorgeous landscapes and interact with the robo wildlife, I'm simply not. I don't feel drawn to the world that Guerilla is creating, compelled by the cast and premise enough to want to learn what happens, or intrigued by the gameplay system to desire playing and mastering them for myself.

I should not Horizon is squarely in my "keep an open mind" pile because I feel I might enjoy it a bit more when I get my hands on it, and that could seal the deal. But yeah. I'm really super picky with open world games as most of them just don't appeal to me or do enough to engage me, and with Horizon's content shown so far I'm getting unfortunate Ubisoft vibes. Not necessarily in design, but how Far Cry 3 and onwards is a series I want to like but find each iteration dull and uninteresting. So with Horizon I'm seeing a game that I want to like, but there's this ache I feel telling me I'm just going to pick it up and go "okay whatever, I don't care".

Fingers crossed!

I kinda get what you mean. I'm not grabbed by the story or dialogue or the characters either yet. I'm definitely in there for the gorgeous world and all that though, but I get it. For example, all it took to get me really into Far Cry 3 was just that first "definition of insanity" cutscene with Vaas. I got really intrigued by the character and the story with just that (even if it didn't end up delivering on that "promise"). Haven't seen a single interesting character in this game yet. Not saying I've seen bad characters either but just haven't seen one that would make me want to play the game just to know that character better.

I'm really glad I opted to get a PS4 as my exclusive box, this looks like the type of game I can get totally lost in. I'm just praying it runs properly on PS4 as I can't enjoy games with performance issues. Uncharted 4 and Order 1886 are really the only 30fps games that didn't feel weird to me, whatever they did made 30fps feel less choppy than usual.

You know, I think I get what you mean. What Horizon need is some side mini games. Like fishing, or maybe hunting real animal for food too, I saw rabbits and boars in gameplay video, I hope I can hunt those for food or material too.

Outside the people in the village we already seen this. Is it possible for them to demo the game just free roaming? Man..

Damn do you want to see the entire game before buying it? They just showed us uncut raw gameplay from the town to taking out the corrupter. No breaks, tons of footage of the different elements like crafting, quests, dialogue, stores, upgrades, etc. I mean come on now. That's basically straight gameplay of so many different aspects.

I'm pretty sure there will be mini games, thats almost a prerequisite for RPGs

What a video. Just loved the reaction on this scene.

They've showed us scripted scenarios at best, I don't want to see the whole game, I just want to see woke natural free roam gameplay of climbing and traversal. But it's like they're so hesitant to show that.

That was as scripted as any mission in the Witcher 3 so I'm not sure what you are getting at.

Search for it on YT. Plenty of off-screen free roam gameplay via regular event gameplay.

In a demo, you want to show the best-play you can in the short time you have, so obviously things feel scripted.

Something's wrong with the framerate, Im seeing lots of stuttering FC3 style, like mini slowdowns all over, maybe is youtube or something.

The combat looks so fucking good in this game. Great to see some npc community gameplay as well.

It will be interesting to see how much we will be able to tailor Aloy's progression to our own playstyles. I am guessing not overly-much, but enough to make certain approaches to encounters a bit more viable than others while not heavily weighing the experience one way or the other.

It's definitely fair to wonder about how "open world" it really is. A lot of the stuff we've seen seems to have mountains surround you on your left and right, with a wide space in between.

If my assumptions are correct here about places you CAN'T traverse (and I could well be wrong), this particular area at least does seem to be a more Destiny like thing, with an open area and paths to go elsewhere to other areas. I HOPE that's not the case. We'll see.

Wide connected hub game?

The only thing that looks really compelling to me so far is the robo dino combat scenarios. I'm worried I'll find all the open world stuff tedious and dull. This sort of makes me wish it were more of an open linear action type game.

Nope, still not convinced. It all looks like something I've seen once or twice too many times. Honestly I'm as hyped for this as any random Ubisoft open-word game, that is to say not at all. The footage just isn't compelling in any way, I look at it and have the feeling I don't have to play it anymore.

The problem I have with Open worlds, is that at first they seem completely overwhelming to me. If at any point the gameplay loop becomes tedious or boring, and the hook isn't quite strong enough, which ends in me feeling like I'm facing a hundred-ish hours of play with little to no reward in sight, they lost me.

And there is a very hard balance to strike in the game's design for the first 10 or so hours (maybe less), between allowing the player to feel the promised freedom, and a tight narrative that keeps you coming for more.
Games like Witcher3 successfully walked that tight rope (even if imo the main quest line was super weak, the quality of side quests helped a lot), while Fallout 4 mostly failed the tight narrative test (but was partially redeemed for many by ancilliary mechanics such as the shooting or base building).

Horizon visibly nails the mechanics involved (at least so far), but I understand the fears expressed. Not (like some like to say) because "it's Guerilla" (they know what their weaknesses were and hired strong talent to compensate), but because achieving that balance is so very hard to start with and even accomplished dev studios can really fail at it.
All this being said, with all we've seen and what we know of the people involved, I am cautiously optimistic that we might be looking at one of the contenders for Goty 2017.
And I can't wait to immerse myself in Alloy's world.
