2011 pretty much just copy + pasted the manga panel and did extremely heavy shading but I think that looks better. '99 Hisoka's bloodlust looks kinda...goofy.

Yeah thats kinda just how Togashi draws. I appreciate that '99 deviates from that and a lot of the time it does look better, but I think in important moments 2011 mostly slides ahead. If you want to say Togashi's character designs suck in general then I agree with you, because they do.

I disagree. The proportions are just generally more out of whack, causing the goofy look. In this case the eyes and eyebrows are humongous and the head appears kinda small for that large chest and shoulders, even if that may be in part due to the clothes.

I think I'd give the slight edge to 1999. Dunno if battle animation has much to do with character design though. Hisoka and Gon look fine there at least. Hisoka in general I do quite like in 2011.

Well, it's not like they don't try to portrait roughly the same atmosphere and tone. They're fairly close adaptations after all.

However, at least as far as I've seen 1999, which is a bit further than the end of the hunter exam arc, the direction is simply far better there.

It's not just the character design of course. The general art direction differs quite substantially. But still, the 2011 character designs look like ass, whether in comparison to 1999 or just generally.

Honestly if I was being more critical as I'm going through HunterxHunter 2011, I would be ripping apart the art direction and general direction. The art direction is essentially mediocre with little sense of dramatic lighting or lighting in general. That said, this is a common complaint of most modern productions now anyways. I kind of see why it's done like this, in that the bright lighting facilitates the comedic tone the show is almost always striving towards. Watching this reminds me of FMA Brotherhood in that it brings up many of the Brotherhood criticisms. This is especially the case when you look at the art direction of the 1999 version in that the lighting makes that work generally look more serious. This is in addition to the exaggerated reaction faces and whatnot. Everything about the art direction is fairly basic such as the coloring, shading, or most of the background art. Case in point, the coloring is largely vibrant so as to reflect the 'energy' of the work however all the coloring in the show is like this so the palette can come across as somewhat monotone. I imagine another reason the staff took this stylistic approach too, besides the tone, was to make animation easier such as for the fights.

It's a fairly lighthearted story in how it's told even if there's a serious undercurrent in it. For example I literally did not know Kastro had died in his fight with Hisoka until episodes later because of how his final scene was presented. This has to do more with the general direction and pacing in that serious moments are kind of sped past or underplayed. This probably rubs some people the wrong way but I feel it works fine for being an action-adventure sort of story.

Gramarye family. Why is Trucy's biological family so much trouble? I thought the series was gonna sprint away from these things as fast it could be honest.

That all said, it was a good case. Much improved over the intro case. I like how the little changes to Trucy's appearance makes her look older. I like how Apollo has gained confidence. I like how they didn't overuse the team's abilities too much.

That has less to do though with the character designs but rather elements like lighting and storyboarding as brought up in the article. For example I can't even remember if 2011 ever uses a fish eye perspective during any of the dramatic moments. That said, the two shows were obviously going for different tones and the directors probably interpreted the material in fundamentally different ways. The '99 version has a dash of horror in how it's framed and presented and the '11 version doesn't really have anything like that.

Amazing how the most "Danganronpaish" has become the worst one. And this comes from someone who prefers the 77th Class and with 4 characters on his personal Top 5 (Chiaki being one of them. A.I Chiaki, this is). No, Future is better. This was underwhelming. At least we had Nagito.

Yeah, the two series are very different interpretations of the same material. As you can see here and elsewhere, some people actually don't like the alterations the 1999 anime made, because it does take a more creative approach while 2011 sticks more closely to the manga. That said, I'm not sure how far you are in 2011 but the direction does improve quite a bit once it gets to Yorkshin, to the point where both anime versions of the Yorkshin arc have their own advantages.
