No Mafia III Review Copies Ahead of Launch

Yes, let's have more uninformed consumers! What a great idea!!

They can just wait a few days/weeks after release, it's a little thing called patience which more folks need to have in general and take more responsibility for their purchasing decisions. I'm not a fan of day one 'hype' reviews either but then I'm very cynical were I don't trust reviewers and I sure as fuck don't trust publishers. This time of year especially were reviewers need to rush to get through a lot of games and publishers will rush games for that xmas dosh.

I don't think this means a lot.
There are tons of games where the opposite happens, reviews are available before launch and they still are shit.
Those people who feel insecure about the game or in general they need reviews before buying a game, well they can wait for reviews :P
Btw based on what I've seen in the gameplay demos I think this will be really solid 80-85 game.

It's funny because they previously had this on the Steam page and had Youtuber's playing the game early, although that's common with most games the fact of the matter is that this is really scummy of the publisher 2K

Oh wow...I think some publishers are lean to youtubers (for generating hype) compare to traditional game medias? Maybe because of their large followers on youtube.

And It may be because it is easier to communicate "fun" through screaming, laughing, frustration, swearing on screeen..lol

What does it take to be on a game's advertising? Big publishers, feel free to quote me:

"10/10 will make your bowels regular"

well shit, already preordered the version that comes with the season pass, im so hyped for this game i would legit not give a shit if it reviews bad lol

All this game needs is good word of mouth from early buyers.

In the busy October season, many people will hesitate to make Mafia 3 their first pick, though.

"Fun"

Full quote:
Mafia 3 takes everything that is fun about open world games, and manages to ruin every aspect.

**Obviously I just made that up but how is that an accurate quote?

There have been a heap of games that haven't released review copies - even GTAV was one. My only concern is how it plays on PC - almost every new game needs a month+ worth of patching before it can even run. I loved the first two games, and I'm looking forward to this one - but I'm holding off until I see how things play out on PC.

Not a good sign. It doesn't look like a bad game, but it certainly looks formulaic. I've been burned out on open-world crime-themed games for years now.

There has already been a bunch of positive word of mouth around it and the gameplay I've seen looks good, so I'm probably still buying it. I never pre-order games anymore, though, so I'll notice if something's up before I go buy it the week of release.

Regardless of reviews, I was buying this game regardless so I pre-ordered the deluxe edition yesterday. For $54 GCU, how can I say no when im super hyped and excited for the game?

I always see people complaining about pre-ordering games but if it's a game that you're going to eventually buy anyway 100% and you can get it cheaper by pre-ordering (Best Buy GCU plus $10 pre-order reward cert), why wouldn't you?

90+ metacritic baby!!!! :)

...because the game could come out and be total dogshit. Whether you think the game will be good or not, you can't know for sure until it comes out. There could be technical issues we haven't seen yet that could make this game unplayable.

The recent gameplay video I saw looked a bit janky. Cars popping in and some aliasing issues causing weird lines on the back window.

Also the enemy A.I. looked rough to me.

I loved Mafia 2, but this is gonna have to get really good reviews before I'm convinced it's worth playing.

The footage we've seen up to this point has looked great to me, so I'm not worried about the game at all. If they were extremely hesitant to show off the game at all, then I'd probably be singing a different tune.

I preordered it and I'm going to decide for myself whether I like it or not. I don't need to be spoonfed anyone else's' opinions. Every time I buy a game I take a chance I may not like it, no matter how good the reviews are.

If this makes anyone uncomfortable or whatever and they'd rather wait, that's fine with me. Where I draw the line is when other people try to tell me what to do.

I would be really surprised if this game turned out to be bad. It looked really solid, but had a fair share of jank, but also has some really interesting characters and story.

What's Polygon's reasoning behind turning down a copy 24 hours early? That doesn't seem to make sense if they were willing to accept an earlier review copy.

Expecting a 7.5ish reviewed game, this doesn't change my thought on that. It's looking like a rare b-tier game, a tier of games that has all but ceased to exist as game development costs have increased. Still in for what looks like an interesting story and setting.

Animations and AI are pretty horrible, so I'm expecting 7 average. If Redbox is getting it, I'll use that to play it. If not, I'll wait for Black Friday sales. This game will surely be $30 or less by then.

No reviews before launch is a marketing tactic, not a red flag.

Many, many games that are embargoed until launch turn out to be good. Who knows if Mafia III will be, but this is not a worrying sign.

Not really a biggie for me, because I have a lot to play so I will wait general impressions until buying myself.

Still very hyped for it tho

2K games offered Polygon reviewable copies of Mafia 3 that would unlock upon the game’s “first global availability” on digital retail storefronts — at approximately 4:00 AM Pacific on Thursday, October 6. We’ve declined this offer, and will be securing our own retail copies of Mafia 3 at the earliest opportunity. With that in mind, it is extremely unlikely that Polygon will have a review up at the time of Mafia 3’s launch next week, though we will do as much as we can to expedite the review process and share our impressions once we have the game in hand.

So umm... can someone explain to me why that is logical and smart play by Polygon?

Because they can get the game before October 6th since retailers might (will) break street date and by doing so they dont have to commit to embargos on any of their coverage about the game

Retailers should be getting the game soon, and some will for sure break street date

One could say they are doing it just out of spite. I wonder why not to do this with every game then? Just get early copy from some hook up you know to break street dates and ignore embargos. Besides if they could play Mafia 3 when masses get access at earliest then there wouldn't be embargo to begin with.

Reviews mean jack shit to me, but honestly, I didn't plan on buying Mafia 3 day one anyway. It looks really cool, and I'm digging the setting and subject matter of the game, but I have too much on my plate right now! I'm thinking I might snag it during Black Friday, along with Doom.

No early reviews doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be shite, but for me this is very much a wait for reviews game. I like the premise and all that shit but I could see it being very mediocre.
