I had high hopes for this, as I loved the remake of the first Mafia: straight to the point, great graphics, zero bloat.

But after the latest footage I don't think it's going to be that good. Still hopeful though. Maybe the big downgrade is just consoles settings.

Yea, the serious reviewers take their time and get stuck on the tutorials!!!

Goddamn, how fucking dumb you have to be not to be able to do a jump dash. Lmao

It's best to compare the breadth of this release to games that game out at $39.99 in the past. The price isn't $49.99, It's 39.99 + 10.

I hope it's good, but none of the prerelease material has given me reason to believe it will be. Quite the opposite in fact. Just a few seconds of the first gameplay trailer and a pretty recent Mafia Remastered playthrough memory was all I needed. Graphics aren't offensive, but that generic movement, shooting, fighting, everything are. Really just read a story synopsis and imagine you played it. Better overall experience and less expensive.

If this game flops, it will be for the comments they made about this not being "open world"

Looking at the IGN preview, its literally like how Mafia 1 and 2 are.... so.....yea. I expect many to skip this not knowing its like 1 and 2. Linear story, does not mean NOT OPEN WORLD. This whole thing could have been avoided if they just stated it was open world like 1 and 2, but a focus on story.

Saying "not open world" will not only alienate the core Mafia fanbase, it makes it sound like its not like the rest of the series, when looking at the previews, it is very much like the rest of the series.

If this game moves less units, its likely because of this suspect marketing. I think it will score ok, but I feel they will lose sales based on those comments.

I even read Youtube comments saying shit like

"No open world is a no sale from me."

"I'm not wasting my money on it if you can't free roam"

"That might sway me towards NOT buying it."

"Well that ruined it"

"Damn bro this is a fucking bummer. Why are so many new games linear. I personally think it's bullshit. Why can't we have a great story and open world?"

and my favorite one

"No open world = No purchase. I feel like they stabbed me in the back. Been playing this franchise since the original. They knew we wanted the next game to be similar to 1 & 2, but did this instead. They lost me as a future customer."

Soooooo do we not fucking see saying some dumb shit liked this can hurt the game when clearly it has an open world? They should have never said this dumb shit and it will cost this game sales 100%. I'm already not buying it and I was able to confirm a normal open world exist exactly like Mafia 1 and 2, but by the time this was known, I already started playing different games and decided to buy it used later down the line. They hurt their own day 1 sales with this dumb wording and bad messaging.

So...who ever is marketing, doing the PR..they need to be fired lol None of this shit should have been stated.

I do agree that they could have elaborated and say it's not open world BUT you can explore the map, but straight up not saying it's not open world is not feasable these days or else people's expectations will inevitably cause a dumb internet meltdown.
That shit for brains you quoted in that last youtube comment is an example of that, he just had to watch the fucking video, the whole 2:40 minutes of it but these people can't fact check for shit, they read a rage baiting headline and start blasting, at least this way the devs protect themselves from fools like that.

I don't even know if I would say that.

The reality is people know Mafia to be an open world game and the term you're talking about is not how most of us has used that terminology as to why you see all of those comments saying that it's because the vast majority do not see that term based on a series of things you do in the actual game

They see that based on the structure of the game, like travel, openness etc. So it's not like people were saying Mafia 1 and 2 are not open world in fact I don't know if that's ever been something anyone has tried to dispute, So I think it's odd that after Mafia 3 people are trying to make it sound like those are different terms

That entire comment section is showing people do not see that term that way and they should have never actually ever made those statements...

Saying it's not like Mafia 3 is more than enough, But then trying to argue the term open world now magically means something completely different is bound to fail because people as the vast majority do not see that term the way you might think. They believe the person is arguing it is like Uncharted as in to say it is not like mafia 1 and 2 where you can roam around an open world as to why people generally just see that term that way.

So the mistake is solely on the developer to even say the statements "not open world"

Never mind a "but..."

Don't fucking say the shit at all, as using that logic Mafia 1 and 2 are not "open world"

Let them know it's open world like mafia 1 and 2 and leave it at that and you'll still get those core fans to show up, but I feel the damage is done and they will lose sales for this.

Why anyone thinks the term means this weird thing is beyond me because the vast majority of consumers have never used the term open world this way even remotely. The ability to randomly do something or do something out of order has never actually been the exclusive term of open world... Lots of open world games exist that have linear stories that have not removed, omitted or debated the term "open world" or something weird like this, as you can have a non-linear story in an open world, you can have a linear story in a open world...

I believe the whole way they went about this makes no sense and the comment section on many, many of those Youtube videos show, most do not use the term this way.

I was expecting reviews in the review thread.

Yeah, this probably should've been titled the "review prediction" thread. Hopefully, someone will start an actual review thread tomorrow morning when the reviews drop. If not, the reviews will be piled in here starting p. 5 or 6, which will be a little confusing.

Afaik, no one has opted to do an OT for the game.

If the game is indeed open world and not segmented somehow that will go down as one of the stupidest dev statements in gaming history. Pure self sabotage.

6.5 more hours I believe. Don't purchase yet boys. Or do, and report back.

Edit: doesn't unlock on Steam for another 10 hours. Maybe out on console?

Exactly, whoever came up with this "not an open-world" marketing should be fired. Linear story + not having tons of side content doesn't mean it's not open-world. A lot of people probably still think this game is a purely corridor game like Uncharted for example.

For me that messaging is clear & simple - it's not going to be another Mafia 3 in terms of how the open world works. But yeah, maybe they should've picked a different marketing strategy.

I just finished (like 20 minutes ago) Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart.

That is a 12 hour linear shooter devoid of interesting gameplay mechanics, with infantile marvelized storytelling. Its only redeeming value is its fantastic graphics and "nextgenness" and kid-friendliness. I only finished it because I wanted to see the graphics of its levels and to not lose the 30 euros I paid for it.

It has 88 metacritic.

I am reasonably sure I will enjoy Mafia infinitely more, yet it will have lower MC. Oh well.

Mad Max Thats GIF

Actually I agree. Rift apart is a very mediocre game. It has a high metacritic number because its an exclusive, otherwise it would probably in the low 70s
Friend of mine who played all the PS2/PSP releases of Ratchet was also very disappointed with Rift Apart. Apparently the older games were vastly funnier and aimed much more at adults through their innuendish humor.

That thing got an 88 on mc?

Further proof that MC is completely and utterly useless.

76 - will probably go down further
