Mafia: The Old Country - Review Thread

What will be Mafia: The Old Country's review average?

A lot of the reviews seems to be holding down the score because the game isn't a 50 hour bloated slop fest.

Good story, good missions and good price. Think I'm in.

Well shit, I have a personal, one-time use 10% off code from CDKeys. That mixed with another 2% off from Apple Pay brings this down to ~$38.

Fuck it

I saw an actual ex mobster say that the story and characters from what he has seen are faithful to that style of life.
Random dude on the internet: "Stereotypical cliches".

The idea of a narrative driven mob game in 1900s Sicily with "stereotypical" mobsters from that location/era is a selling point for me, rather than a detriment. It shows why metacritic scores aren't always indicative of how much I'll like a game since I'm often looking for something completely different than what a reviewer is looking for.

any word on performance on ps5 pro?

Not that I've seen. There is only one review under the PS5 tag on Metacritic, and the guy says in the review that he played it on PC, lol.

I'm assuming performance is ok on PS5 Pro, but I haven't seen anyone remark on that specifically.

Regarding PC version
Considering Half Life 2 released a decade ago and this game looks like it came from the same era, I would certainly hope so.

I think the soft critiques and low expectations for this come from people who didn't play the original. There's really nothing like it. One can only imagine how amazing they could make a modern technology version of that design doc. Would instantly contend for GOTY.

Sigh... exactly where I though it will land. Given the size of my backlog, I guess this isn't getting on the list.

HL2 came out two decades ago.

Imho this looks perfectly fine, comparable to other AAA games.

Yes, Mafia 1 is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made.

Any word on the two graphics modes? They said there would be a performance mode, but do the graphics take a big hit I wonder?

And is it mostly stable at 60fps?

About as expected, interesting story in a cool setting with unremarkable gameplay.
I might check it out on a sale. Though that quote someone posted a few pages back about there barely being any action during the first 3 hours might make me skip it, sounds like a Druckmann style game.

I just want to know if pc graphics can be pushed up to the first trailers' quality. I'm always in the mood for a linear good looking game full of old clichés.

Feels refreshing in this day and age xD

Yeah, this looks pretty good. Much better than the recent footage we've seen, anyway.

80 review average and I'd buy right away.
3382 games got 80 and above in metacritic(1370 games got >= 85, 377 games got >=90).
These are for all time.

If we only look at the last 10 years, there have been 1,474 games that scored 80 or above. Still, I don't think that's considered a high score anymore. We're also in a time where even games that score 88-90 aren't necessarily that good. So relying on demos, betas, and gameplay videos to decide seems more reasonable to me.

Honestly, those shots do look good.

If this game doesn't do well, it's because it lacked any sort of presence leading up to its release.

Casuals will see the word Mafia and grab it.

Mafia: The Old Country relies on a handful of dated instant-fail stealth segments with poor checkpointing to break up the pace of driving, shooting, and cutscenes in a typical mission. These range from inconvenient to frustrating. One in particular sees Enzo sneaking into a government facility to crack a safe. It's a fun premise, but one slip-up puts you back outside to start over, regardless of how deep you make it into the building.
From Gamespot review.
I was mostly worried the game would have too much stealth, and this kind of old-school forced stealth looks pretty annoying. I'd probably enjoy the cliche mafia story and the usual tps gameplay, but I'm not really thinking of getting the full version.

Half-Life 2 came out in 2004 and no this game does not look like it.

It does look more like a high end PS4 game sure but we had high end PS4 games looking great coming out a few years ago.

I'm gonna be real here and I know the apologists and fanboys can't deal with their sacred COW being attacked. No cap, this shit closer to Rise Of The Robots, Command & Conquer or Returnal with the Pro patch update specifically than it is to The Last Of Us III: Remastered Definite Ultra Remake HBO Edition or even fucking Quake II.

Driveclub, Battlefront 2, Order 1886...quite a few PS4 games look just as good if not better than most 2025 games.
Technically, PS4 games are already dated (raster lighting), however, if you simply play the game without thinking too much about the visuals, it may really seem as PS4 era games still holds up. Right now I'm playing god of war 2018 in HDR and I'm blown away even though there's no RT in this game.

Games that use prebaked lighting due to no need for dynamic daytime cycles look just as good as modern RT powered games despite running on decade old hardware, precisely because they bake the lighting into textures. It is raster, but with RT-like result - as long as you don't need it to be dynamic.

Nice. Waiting the pyx trophy guide. If it's an easy one I will buy it next month after I'm done with MGS. If it's not I'll get it this weekend when I'm done with RoboCop.
