Watched 13TH (on the 13th!). I knew about most of what was in there but not about ALEC. That was an eye-opener there, especially the footage from 1980 where that one politician straight-up says having fewer people vote is beneficial for them. Showing how many products are manufactured by prisoners was new to me too. There were some other new angles on old information I liked though.
A question that periodically pops up is why did black activists sort of go quiet during the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's. 13TH suggests it's because so many were locked up that it weakened the community.
There's also a part that's a bit critical of the recent push to roll back mass incarceration as simply something that's politically convenient right now, and that all this shit is just gonna take a new form in the future.
Another thing on Netflix to compare: The House I Live In. It's mainly about mass incarceration, but at the end it puts it on more of a class angle. It suggests that in the end the US is just warehousing all its poor people, finding something to do with the ones they don't need because of automation and the like.
