Coming from the PS4, I am blown away by the Xbox One.

XB1 UI has always been my favorite, it looks so much nicer, whenever I turn on my PS4 the UI alone makes me want to turn it off. PS4 animated backgrounds are awesome tho.

Both kinda suck but I find the Xbox UI to be way more clean and organised than PS4. But I always hated PS3 XMB and PS4 is more or less a blown-out-of-proportion version of that so eh

It's probably hard to design a great UI doesn't feel sluggish with a controller but Steam BPM does it pretty well imo. Of course, it doesn't have to carry the whole OS settings and entertainment app baggage though.

It never made sense to me that people continue to bash the xbox one UI.

It's slow. That's a definite downside. It shouldn't be.
But it's NOT confusing to use. You have to be intentionally unwilling to commit to memory how to do basic shit like press menu on things to open the menu (crazy I know) in order not to figure it out.

Like, literally you go to what you want to do something with, and you hit menu and it's like right clicking on PC. Done. What else is there? You can organize things how you want, and due to the tile layout it's significantly faster to get to what you want than PS4's layout. The old dash had more issues, but it was similar enough from the get go.

Leads me to believe the majority of people that shit on the Xbone dash are people that don't actually play anything on an xbone tbqh. Either through not owning one (console warrior types), or simply being unwilling to even try to learn their 'secondary' console's UI because, hey everyone always says it sucks, why not. I mean, the ps4 UI is 'fine' but it takes way too many button presses to do ANYTHING compared to Xbone nd information is not organized in an organic way at all.

You should read the last thread. Some people were actually trying to claim the disc tile was too hard to find, and the my games and apps took 30 minutes to find despite it being literally right infront of you.

UI: first iteration was worse than garbage. Second is better, but still vastly inferior (unintuitive and sluggish)

Controller: excellent, although I still dislike the bumpers (Wii U Pro does it right)

I like the controller, and actually prefer the original one with the shoulder buttons that everybody hated, but that damn UI... I don't use the PS4 or Xbox One often these days, but any time I start up the Xbox I'm reminded of how horrible the UI is. Just trying to do simple things can be incredibly obtuse. I don't know how a company focused on operating systems can mess up a UI so badly.

The new xb1 controller is hands down better than the ps4 controller. The sticks, buttons, triggers, and bumpers are all just better. The build quality is also quite a bit better

I mean, I've only ever used a friend's Xbox One for a little while but literally nothing on the dashboard was where I expected it to be. Hate the tiles too which doesn't help.

Yeah, desperation of some to spread FUD is embarrassing, especially "ads everywhere, where's my games?!"

See, shit like this, do you actually have an example? Because I bet it's some combination of: Move to whatever category or item you are interested in looking at (Through a combination of moving the cursor or using the bumpers), and then pressing the menu button to open all context sensitive functions for that item. Crazy I know.

I mean, I've only ever used a friend's Xbox One for a little while but literally nothing on the dashboard was where I expected it to be. Hate the tiles too which doesn't help.

So in other words, you have barely used one and you were predisposed to hating it. Like everyone else. What are you looking for that is so hard to find? I'm GENUINELY curious. Games? right there where you start up. Pins? Press the triggers and it shortcuts right to them (which you can pin anything there that you want). Friends/parties/messages/etc? hit LB. Want to change settings or view information or anything else on anything? Push menu on it to right click.

The XB1 UI is the complete opposite of confusing or unorganized.

It is slow though. Dreadfully slow. It's unbelievable how slow it can get sometimes. *shudder*

The way some people talk about the UI, makes me think people don't want to like it. Because it makes no sense to say it's confusing or disorganized. Everything is clean and clear and organized in a methodical manner.

Its actually the other way around: people who don't understand what people are complaining about are people who got over the learning curve and are now proficient at navigating the console. both consoles have consistency issues, are optimized for business goals with user experience as a secondary goal, and both are bloated and victim of feature creep. Its just that one has a steep learning curve on top of it all.

Apparently there were 10 ads for MCC on the homescreen aswell, even though there was only 2 tiles for "ads" and they're never the same thing that I'm aware of.

Honestly I struggle to call them ads tbh, as long as they're gaming/store related (and they are unless you opted in to some marketing thing in that case it's on you), then I don't see the problem but maybe that's just me.

The PS4 controller build quality was shit and had been upgraded to mediocre.

Not a fan of the xb1 UI, but to be fair I started with a PS4 and make most of my purchases from their (PSN purchases have no tax) so I never really took the time to learn it extensively

Except there is no learning curve, the layout functionally isn't that different from every other console UI (Pages of of categories up top, which the bumpers navigate, and within each page you just move around with the fucking stick/dpad), except that you press Menu to open the context sensitive menu on any square. That's it. Complicated as fuck I know.

Maybe I'm crazy, but to me you have to be intentionally unwilling to 'learn' anything at all to be unable to figure that out, like have you ever used a computer? Or how do these people figure out their fucking phones for that matter? These same people managed to figure out where to find shit like what they're actively downloading on PS4 somehow, despite there being no rhyme or reason to the organization there. Hence why I ask for examples of what people think is so hard to figure out. "Basic functions" that they're unable to perform ebcause it's so confusing, apparently, yet rarely does anyone mention them. If you say you can't find your games, it's hard to take you seriously when it's literally the button right next to the game you're currently playing, for example.

The only issue with the UI is that it's slow.

How can people defend this terrible UI? Nothing about it makes sense lol how things are organized is a clusterfuck.

Controller is great though.

What do you mean by how things are organized? You have the primary menu with four (sometimes five) tabs:

Home: where you have your most recently used content, pins and access to your game/app library within button presses and clearly labeled.

Community: the friend/XBL feed for other's achievements/uploads.

OneGuide: media content for movies/TV/music all labeled and sorted.

Store: self explanatory, shows each type of content purchasable in different lists with labels.

The Hotness: this is new, it may be recurring or only for the holiday season, but it is a tab dedicated to a big new release (Gears, then BF1) just a glorified store link to a big release.

The quick access menu with the double tab of the guide button, or navigating to the home tab and going left is where everything else can be found in list form. That sure sounds poorly organized. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it isn't as bad as all the hyperbole on these forums make it out to be. The PS4 and Xbox One UI are equal in my eyes and comes down to which you use more being more comfortable. I can hop between them without issue and find neither to get in the way of accessing content.

I wonder the same thing tbh, when you miss the huge tile for discs it makes me wonder how the hell they manage to do anything on their phone.

What was a mess at launch has been greatly refined. It's a good UI now with some flaws. I immediately dismiss people who say it's un organized when it's the exact opposite. And give the Xbox One sidebar for the PS4 Ui anyway.

The Xbox One UI is arguably the worst UI I have ever used. There are positives about Xbox One but the UI is not one of them.

Definitely agree. It's slow, it's confusing, it's ugly. Just terrible all around. If I hold down the ps button it lets me do everything I want to do. That is GOOD ui, not bad ui. The xbox doesn't let you do any of this. You have to triple tap a bumper while holding down two other buttons while doing a half circle on the left stick. Or at least, that's what it feels like when you're trying to use some of the xbox functions.

The XB1 UI is the complete opposite of confusing or unorganized.

The way some people talk about the UI, makes me think people don't want to like it. Because it makes no sense to say it's confusing or disorganized. Everything is clean and clear and organized in a methodical manner.

Let me put it in perspective. On ps4, you have three main sections. The games lineup line, then you can go one level below that to see certain things, or you can go one level above to see other things. On the xbox you've got icons on the main screen, icons on the left, icons up top, icons on the right, icons below. It's an absolute maze compared to the ui on ps4.

There are definitely parts of the xbox UI that are far superior to PS4, and vica versa. Having a physical install switch to digital is instant on XBox, whereas you have to delete and redownload on PS4. Party setup is far superior on xbox, especially being able to invite strangers into game sessions directly.

I much prefer the friends, trophies, messagings, notifications, etc on PS4 though the Xbox one is a mess. On the plus side the xbox app on W10 mirrors everything and is really nice, especially if your PC is in the same room as your xbone.

The xbox UI definitely has a lot better technical info/improvements under the hood, but I'd say from a general "turn on and game" I prefer the ps4 interface. Its also great how I can eject a disc from the ps4 UI, still have to push a button on the xbox like a pleb :(

Its always fun going back to a ps3 or 360 and being stunned at how much better the new interfaces are though.

Because I bet it's some combination of: Move to whatever category or item you are interested in looking at (Through a combination of moving the cursor or using the bumpers), and then pressing the menu button to open all context sensitive functions for that item. Crazy I know.

How about something as basic as identifying battery level when multiple controllers are connected? A single battery meter in the upper right of the home screen that just silently changes to whatever controller last hit the xbox button? That is hardly intuitive. That's just one example that's fresh in my memory from a recent session with a friend. Were I at home with access to the Xbox right now, I'd be able to rattle off more odd design choices.

Once again, I don't use any of my consoles often so it's often a matter of relearning the sequences to accomplish a given task when I do. Nothing is really committed to memory, let alone muscle memory for me. The Xbox One has consistently had more "wtf" moments than the PS4 for me during my ownership of it. That's made worse by the fact that I hold MS to a higher standard than Sony when it comes to software.

I still can´t believe it.

@everyone who writes it is horrible / confusing / and so on.

Please clarify what you do not find or find confusing.

I bet it´s only 2 button presses away ...

With the Quick Menu shotcuts on the PS4 UI, it just got much better. After the update 4.00 its by far the best UI i experienced on a console.

Shit like this. You're saying things are arranged so that you can go up left down and right, and there are categories up top (not icons)? Damn. that sounds so unintuitive and different from the PS4 where you go up down left and right. Not sure why you're convinced everything is an icon, everything is a tile - not the same. they have text on every single thing that makes it readily identifiable.

Here's how you do 90% of everything you do on a console:
Most recently played/currently open game, in descending order with giant tiles right up front. Hit right to go to games and apps to open...your games and apps, which are seperated into games and then apps, and which you can sort, change the size of tiles, check what you're currently downloading, see a list of all the things you own that AREN'T downloaded so that you can quickly download them again if you want, pin things to the front screen (which is basically a start menu you can put whatever you want in whatever order you want for quick access). Shit. confusing as fuck fam. Or you can hit the bumper like twice and go to the store. Or you can hit left bumper to go to the popup menu for shit like friends, notifications, messages, snap apps, whatever. All of which are clearly labelled - with text - at the top of the screen as categories.

Yeah I had an xbox one for a few months and didn't like the UI much at all. Cumbersome and confusing. I don't love the playstation UI either but at least it feels more natural to use IMO.

I still can´t believe it.

@everyone who writes it is horrible / confusing / and so on.

Exactly. People always say it's confusing / trash / so on without saying what about it is so confusing.

I think people just primarily use PS4 and really can't be bothered putting more than 30 secs in to learn the XB1 UI and want a carbon copy of PS4 so they call it trash because it's different. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing I just don't think it's fair to say "it's bad cause it's not the same as PS4"

Both have their pros and cons. Neither are perfect.

Having said that i prefer the ps4 ui.

This. And in terms of UI they are both serviceable and do their job well, and both will probably continue to improve in UI over time just as they have already. For myself I liked the xbox one UI more til PS4 finally added folders and some customization, now I tend to like that one more. Both systems have been great for me though and third party wise they are extremely similar in games. When it comes to first party it just depends on type of preference you like, if you tend to like shooters and racers more you'll have preferred the exclusives on xb1, if you tend to like Japanese games more like Bloodborne, Gravity Rush and soon to be Last Guardian, you'll most likely prefer the ps4 more.

This is in no way accurate, it could "feel like" anything. It could feel like a thousand salted papercuts to you... what is this? What purpose does hyperbole like that serve?

Which is crazy because most of those people owned a 360 last gen and had to learn the PS4 too, just like they had to learn the 360. Just like they have to learn everything else in life. It's not like it's complex and requires a class or something, and it literally shows you a quick video when you buy the console saying "Hey, press menu/start on these things to open a menu on them"

Like...the most common complaints make literally no sense.
"How do I get to my games though?!?!"
FVcbCNe.jpg

"Oh, you mean you press right once to get to "My games and Apps"? Well...I was trying to call that hard. What about the current game I...oh, that's the giant tile right in the middle? What if I put a disc in? oh, it just starts and becomes that giant tile? ok then."

"What about finding what I want in this giant list of games I own huh? That's hard as fuck!"

"Wait, it's just sorted, by alphabetical or whatever else I want, in tile sizes that I want? Listen. I'm trying to refuse to learn anything here, you're not helping by showing me how intuitive and simple this is"

"What about if I want to uninstall or find more info about the game? I Press A and it just opens it. Figure that shit out, it's impossible"

"Oh, you press the menu button to open a menu on any tile. I guess that makes sense. It's still not exactly the same as my old Xbox 360 UI though and change scares me"

"What if I want to just find one save game to delete, or one piece of DLC, huh? I bet you gotta fuck with the whole thing still"

"I just press manage game in that other window and it pulls up everything related to that game on my console, or waiting to be installed from my account? Fuck you, this is too confusing still"

I mean, I could go on and keep posting this kind of shit with stuff like the friend list or whatever, but it's all the same kind of "Hey that's actually completely obvious" - which is why it's really hard to take seriously that anyone who has trouble figuring this stuff out has even TRIED to be willing to learn.

For me on the other hand, the Xbox One feels like a big step back. So slow to navigate (sometimes you can't even tell if it registered a button press, especially when trying to do functions with the xbox button), the store + the store's search results are bad (the webstore isn't great either). Honestly I'd play the Xbox more if its UI wasn't such a mess, but I absolutely hate using it. It feels to me like a UI designed with a mouse & a more powerful machine in mind, and despite knowing exactly where to go, navigation is a pain.

I really don't have a problem with the UI other then the fact it is not as snappy as it should be on a game console in 2016. If the UI on the Scrorpio lags MS needs to fire whoever is making this stuff

No It's trash because it's slow and unwieldly it has become even with accessing the basic menus. It also doesn't help when parties crap out fairly consistently and the whole experience is poor.

Comparing it with PS4 just shows how bad it has become. The PS4 is worlds better and has been since launch. The 360 interface is also much better.

It seems like you and the other ones defending the Xbox One don't want to hear anyone having negative opinions about it.

The one thing that REALLY bothers me on the XBone is how clunky it is to get screenshots. On PS4 I set it up to capture screens by pressing the share button (instead of holding it). It's just so simple. On the XBone you need to double click the X Button and press Y and often I miss what I wanted to capture, this sucks so fucking hard.

What are you talking about? What basic menu function is unwieldy? People that insist on pushing narrative that its bad never actually have specific examples it seems.
