PS4 Pro PR has been terrible

The Scorpio talk is really getting out of hand. I'm getting one, but the amount of people shitting on the Pro and in the same breath state support for the Scorpio like they know everything is unbelievable.

Let's be honest...it's coming from mostly Xbox fans that have had to put up with 3 years of hearing about the PS4 being more powerful and having the better version of multiplatform games...

Console wars and all...

I am still baffled at what people like OP want to hear, as the benefits from having a Pro running in 1080p will differ from game to game. There is no blanket "this will do x for you" answer. Every dev will decide what they do with the extra power. Sometimes it's gonna be FPS, sometimes it's gonna be resolution, sometimes it's gonna be extra foliage, and sometimes more complex geometry.

OP should start looking at the games he is interested in and see if he can find info on what the Pro will do for each game.

I think that by far is the most baffling thing I read on here. Microsoft gave people a short hype video, specs on a paper napkin and they are sold, then sony has a full presentation explaining their console and its capabilities, price, tons of videos and impressions from people like DF and they still have no idea about it over a months worth of coverage and content. At this point I dont even know what to say.

I've only been able to jackiechan.gif this whole thread and most of the others. On top of that, people are even arguing against developers on it lol.

Yea pretty much...let them have their fun.

GAF doesn't actually play games anyway lol, we just post about stuff in the gaming industry.

I'm playing Tomb Raider right now and my mind is being blown. I'm waiting on both because it's overkill, at least for me.

Doesn't help that, like you said, the PR has been awful.

Scorpio (appears) to be everything i wanted PS4Pro to be. A console capable of 4k with a UHD drive. I'd much rather Sony have launched the PS4Pro at $500-600 and made that type of device instead of the prosumer half measure they're putting out.

Once Horizon comes out...

Threads like this will look silly...

Pro does not need a huge marketing push, they are not playing catch up like MS. Just trying to extend the lead. It's still a PS4, forum goers are more informed, but in the age of smartphones, the general public is not stupid either. I'm sure the "pro" identifies a lot.
Thread already looks silly, combined with the OP's being wrong to the posters saying wait for Scorpio. It's just a bunch of stupidity.

You are on point that they don't need to do a huge marketing push and I imagine marketing will start in the next couple weeks.

Sony is doing the right thing with the price, Yes I would like a UHD drive in it but at 399, they are on point. Scorpio has a huge uphill battle when it launches at minimum 499 but I suspect it will launch at 599.

6TF son!! That's all you need to know!

Seriously though Mark Cerny did a great job this past week, and I expect some new videos on YouTube and PSblog closer to launch.

IMHO, I think the name PS4 "Pro" says enough for general public. People know what the plus means now because of smartphones and tablets, and i don't think Pro needs some big marketing push. It's needs to be on display at Best Buy showing off FF15, Horizon and Gran Turismo. And that's what's gonna happen.

This maybe debatable at this point about forum goers being more informed. lol

Oh god the same things over and over just to give some people the usual ground to make console war.

Sony can't tell you precisely how each developer is going to use the hardware because they're not mandating how to use the extra power. If you have a full HD TV the minimum you can expect is native 1080p in every game with better IQ.
This has been said to death and the same issues will rise with Scorpio as well, benefits will vary across games, some will focus just on rendering at native 4k, others not.
So just wait until developers fully announce the specifics of their Pro support (some are already doing it) and then decide if it's worth to you or not.

And it will be balanced out by all the PS4Pro fans shitting on the regular Xbox talking about how much further behind it is. It's round and round, never ending.

For me the issue is that as a 1080p tv owner I'm more concerned about what games will get a patch. It's partly why I'm gonna wait to get one because I want to see how the patching system works itself out. I almost wish Sony would just allow current games to get whatever speed boost would be provided by the hardware to see if it becomes an actual issue or are they being overly cautious.

Well, I'm assuming it will. When quick switching between the PS4 menu and the game (running at 1080p) with the PS4 menu running in 4K, it'd be super weird to have your TV flicker to switch between resolutions every time you go into the PS4 menu.

Well, OG PS4 doesn't upscale to 4K currently :P

But it does support HDMI 2.0, which would generally make 4K output common sense, otherwise there is no point with having HDMI 2.0 in the first place or having 4K gaming content.

Why? They still have the PS4 Slim to capture the lower end of the market. I wish sony actually made a console for people who already spent $2,000+ on a 4k HDR TV and are less price sensitive. Yes, that would mean a $500 console but as 4k TVs come down in price and adoption increase so could the 4k capable console.

These are the users who are spending $1200+ on a gaming PC that they claim the console is trying to keep in the ecosystem.

Ehh I own a ps4 and am planning to upgrade to a pro. What can the Scorpio do for me? I don't buy blu-rays, I may buy 1-2 just to see the wow factor but not enough to justify having 4k playback currently with those $30 price tag. Not to mention games are such a big unknown for fall 2017 and 2018. Its not like the Scorpio promised 100% native 4k which is just inefficient use of power. Also how are they handling support for old games? We basically have no information. We just know it's more powerful.

I don't want to go into a list war but Sony's known future releases are quite compelling with 4k support and supersampling. I can't say the same for Microsoft for me imo

To be pedantic, I didn't say PS4 Pro is a bad option for those owning a PS4, but that Scorpio is a good option :) PS4 Pro's value proposition is higher if you don't already have a PS4.

Are you talking about PS4 Pro now? Note I'm talking about PS4 Pro first, and OG PS4 after the second quote.

Pro.

I also think a lot of the media is to blame for a lot of the confusion surrounding the Pro as well.

As of right now, most media sites have essentially taken titanfall 2 developers words and only use the headline "Titanfall 2 not native 4K on PS4 Pro!"

Even though they rattled off tons of other upgrades, and generally never promised 4K to begin with, its really frustrating to hear clickbait like that because it just gets people angry for no reason.

I partly blame Sony for using 4K as the buzzword in their initial presentation despite not having 4K media or actual 4K gaming as a priority, but then the responsibility falls on basic common sense and world of mouth to clarify what the pro actually represents, and that was never going to turn out well because its hard to explain what higher resolutions are, what downsampling is, what stabler FPS and improved graphics gets people, especially without direct comparisons when the console is not even out.

Pre-ordered mine a week ago.

It really is hard to advertise. I only had an idea of what HDR is capable of yesterday when I watched some HDR demos on my TV and on my PC monitor for comparison.

I thought it was just PR talk but the difference is night and day. Expecting great things from games.

It's funny this thread almost as many pages as the thread from last week explaining more about the pro. That thread has been on the front page all weekend. How do you not see it?

The PS3 didn't do too well at $600 and neither did the Xbox One at $500.

$400 is the sweet spot.

right pretty much it can hit at minimum solid 1080p and more stable frame rates or developers can scale up and go as far as 4k with either rendering techniques or brute force 4k with sacrifices.

Hm, I dunno. They're mostly foolish for setting themselves up for that 'True 4K' Microsoft narrative. Leaving that out of the equation, it's perfectly fair to say it'll look great on a 4K TV the way they did. It's not like people own 1800p TVs, you know?

By the way, I still don't understand your previous reply. Of course it can output in 4K! The question is whether non-patched games will use a built-in PS4P upscaler (like XB1S does) or whether it outputs in the original resolution and lets your TV take it from there (like PS3 did).

People don't seem to be able to grasp this.

I think people wanted/expected 1080p/60fps for all games which was a pipe dream. We are now at the point where people are going through the various stages of DENIAL. This will soon pass as more compelling content becomes available and people come to terms with what PS4P is vs what they wanted.

idk, maybe its because I play PC 99% of the time and I already understand what differences to expect at 1080p, but I've been fine with it.

I also think the fact that they arent shoving it down as the true way to play should be nice for the people that were freaking out before the announcement that the pro would ivnalidate their standard ps4

so ? im not a shareholder so i dont give a crap about who sells more consoles. all i know is sony is releasing a weak "premium" console thats in an awkward place between 1080p and 4k while ms waits a few months to put out a real premium console

compare xbone s to psslim. ms is miles ahead of sony when it comes to build quality of console and gamepad, a strange shift from last gen but im not complaining.

A thicker software layer would probably accomplish this but then you would have to consider performance implications. Im fine with their approach honestly.

12 months = a few?

I dunno man. XB1S > PS4 Slim, definitely.

But OG PS4 can go toe to toe with the One S, and the Dual Shock 4 can go toe to toe with the XB1S controller.

Also, yeah, the 'few months' thing is weird and I don't think Sony's position is that awkward tbh.

I've owned mostly Sony consoles my entire life, except for the 360.

This is the first time I'm legitimately confused with what Sony is trying to do. Maybe they think people are stupid but PS4 Pro simply isn't what it's advertised.

It is not a 4k Console.

It can't play games at Native 4K. I doubt it can play games on 1440P on Ultra with a steady 60 FPS let alone 4K.

It doesn't have a 4K Blu-Ray player so it can't even do Blu-Rays properly.

Nothing about it is 4K yet they advertise it as such. It's ironic that it tries to be 4K and that that's all it achieves, "Trying."

Knowing that fact, I'm going with Microsofts Scorpio this time around. I'm not sure if it can do 4K, doubt it. Desktops that cost $2,000 struggle with 4K/Ultra/60 fps, I don't expect it to. But at least I can have true UHD blu-rays. It's why I have a 65" 4K TV after all.

Me too! I'm buying the Pro so I don't have to deal with that non-native res shit anymore!!

.....Oh, wait.

Faux K

1080P minimum being standard on the Pro is the selling point for me. I have a 4K TV and honestly I'll probably choose the 1080P mode with highest available graphics options most of the time.

There's plenty of games going to be native 4K on pro, also if uhd playback is that important to you I'd still go with a better standalone unit.

Has Sony advertised it as a 4k console? Honest question. I haven't seen anything from Sony saying that. It's all been journalists and forum fodder saying it's a 4k console. Cerny came out and said that it's just an upgrade over the existing ps4.

Links please :)

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/ps4-pro/

Not even the official site talks about 4k gaming, even though there are several games already announced that will be native 4k.

Only thing right about this post is that Pro doesn't have a 4K player. Please do your research before posting false information like this. You want to wait for Xbox 2 that's cool, but there are a bunch of incorrect assumptions on your part.

Read back a bit.
There is a list of native 4K games.

You are poorly informed and then try to inform others.
I can run games in 4k on a GTX 720 as well, doesnt mean anything relevant will be 4k.

depends on the user (and what games they like to play) but it's a reaction to:
It is not a 4k Console.

It can't play games at Native 4K

And that's false.

But we all know that very few big AAA games will be in 4K.
Hopefully for 4K screen owners, the Scorpio will.

I still want to know if every game will need to have a Pro Enhanced mode or support for this will just drop 18 months from now

This.

I'm still incredibly bitter about my "New 3DS". Which was required for 1? game (Xenoblade) and "enhanced" others that no one gave a shit about.

Yeah. That is why I decided to wait and purchase Scorpio...Too much of the unknown. Can't be spending $400.

This makes absolutely no sense! So instead of buying a system you know about you're going to wait for a system you know NOTHING about and will likely suffer from the same confusion and be just as expensive?

Sony is marketing it as an upgraded PS4 offering better graphics and performance compared to the standard model. There is a reason they have called it PS4 Pro and not PS4K.
Microsoft is the one marketing the Scorpio as a ''true'' 4K machine and it will backfire when many games won't run at that resolution or to keep the promise they're going to make compromises and waste all the extra power they have.

I can run games in 4k on a GTX 720 as well, doesnt mean anything relevant will be 4k.

TLOU, Skyrim, NBA and PES 2017 are relevant already.
